Specialties

Al’s Gourmet Falafel and Fries is Salt Spring Island’s gourmet mobile food cart specializing in freshly made falafel pitas and salads and fresh cut potato and yam fries. Our other menu items include the best tasting Poutine outside of Quebec as well as our newest Southwestern Chicken Kebab Pita, a tender chicken kebab wrapped in pita with veggies and candied jalapenos! Olives and chipotle mayo — delicious! We are located at the Salt Spring Saturday Market April to October and on Rainbow Road, Monday to Fridays, 11−4pm year round. Al’s can be found at the Earth Day and Canada Day celebrations on the island as well as The Filberg Festival, the Providence Farm Folk Festival and the local Fall fair. We also specialize in late night feeding frenzies (aka. Private party catering). We look forward to serving you and making your tummy smile!

History

Established in 2011.

Al’s Gourmet Falafel and Fries began in April 2011 intended solely as a Saturday Market business. Our popularity grew so quickly that we began opening during the week on the unfinished boardwalk in Ganges. In September we moved our weekday location to Rainbow Road across from the High School to cater to the many students, teachers and workmen in the neighbourhood just outside the main area oft own. Within 6 months of being open we won the Chamber of Commerce New Business of the Year award. However, around the same time the Islands Trust began receiving Bylaw complaints from local restaurants and Al’s was at risk of being shut down due to non-compliance on Rainbow road. This led many locals to show their support for the small business and in the end the location was rezoned Commercial and the Falafel Cart was allowed to stay. Al’s has since become somewhat of an island institution and can probably be spotted at the next Salt Spring event! see you there!
