I was supposed to have a half hour layover in the airport in Halifax before my flight to Deer Lake, NL today. But we were an hour late leaving Toronto so I missed my connecting flight and had a 2.5 hour wait for the next flight to Deer Lake. I had lunch at Legends … it is the only sit down restaurant once you are through Security so there’s not a lot of choice. There are VLTs(gambling machines) in the restaurant if you’re feeling lucky. I ordered a club sandwich(minus the lettuce) with kettle chips. It was okay. I’m not a big fan of kettle chips so left most of them. Melinda was my server and she was fast and friendly.

There was a hair on our food, and the only good beer on the menu was unavailable. High prices, bad food.

For most of my life I haven’t traveled a whole lot, but nonetheless it’s still surprising that I’ve never been to Legends in all my years of air travel. It’s only one of a couple options for adult beverages on the domestic departures side, so you think I would have popped in for refreshments, but no. I took the initiative on my most recent flight out of YHZ when I needed my breakfast fix but wasn’t feeling like a Tim Horton’s breakfast sandwich. It was still fairly empty when I arrived, as it was just after 10am, so there there only a couple other tables occupied. The VLTs weren’t even on yet! I was greeted quickly, grabbing an OJ while I perused the menu. There were a handful of breakfast options, and I settled on the Nova Scotia Breakfast which comes with two eggs, a house made fish cake, home fries, toast and green tomato chow. My food came out extremely quick, and I soon saw why, as it appeared that the kitchen is all about cooking things on the highest heat possible to crank out food. The eggs and toast were immediately noticeable as being overcooked/burnt. The toast was only marginally salvageable because of the yolks of my eggs, but even then they still tasted burnt. As for the eggs, the bottom of them were dark brown and a tough, leathery mess. My home fries had a mildly herby seasoning on them, but in stark contrast to the toast and eggs, they could have used more time on the flat top to get some colour. The fish cake was thick and had a generous dose of fish inside, and while I prefer my fish cake with breading on the outside, this was still a perfectly fine fish cake. The cup of chow added some tangy sweetness to the dish. I also appreciated that the OJ was Minute Maid and not one of those tiny bottles of Fairlee that are a complete rip off. The service was quick and friendly, and I was in and out in about 30m. Legends seems to suffer from the mediocrity that all the restaurants at YHZ seem to have — they’re all managed by the same company that has the food service contract for the airport and there isn’t the type of ownership of the business or competition to motivate these places to do well. Legends will do if you want a sit down meal or pre-flight drink, but don’t set the bar too high.

Not many options at the domestic terminal after security, not many options at this small airport at all but it meets your standard requirements of booze and TV. They have couple of TVs for the sports aspect of the name, and all your standard booze and beers for the bar portion. I had a Rickards White Ale and it was in the neighborhood of $ 8 – 9, not bad considering it is an airport bar in Halifax. The bartender was really nice and they even have outlets behind the bar so you can plug in and charge your stuff while you are drinking the time away. This is not fancy or pantsy, your average bar in an airport.

Legends Sports Bar is the only sit down full service option at the Halifax airport once you are upstairs waiting for a flight. The food is standard sports bar fare. I had a BBQ pizza that had too much cheese, but was otherwise decent. Expect rather institutional food that is edible, but not amazing. The cheesecake might have come from Costco, but it was good. Surprisingly, the service here is very good. While it may not be the norm, my server was excellent with everything from special requests to refills.

Had the Angus burger with garden salad. Burger was tasty and salad was fresh. Service was good. Will come back!

Was stuck at the Halifax Airport the whole day, your Classic Breakfast was a new level of Gross. Everything about it was horrible, it was by far the worst breakfast I’ve ever been served. Customer Service was awful. At the end of the day(storm stranded me in Halifax) I stopped by for a beer, after getting to the end I noticed a dead fly in my glass, when a asked the bartender to replace the last 1⁄5 of the beer with fresh beer. I was told, well were closing and you need to catch your flight so hurry it up. I responded, «Actually I’ve been stuck all day and the last flight left me stranded here» He responded, well were leaving so finish up fast. There were still 5 patrons finishing there drinks. Thanks for making the end of my day even worse, Clean your glasses, food is a new level of low and customer service was horrible. This place sucks, your better off going to The vending machine.

Nice people, great service, but the bacon was the tiniest serving I have EVER seen… and microwaved eggs… please ONLY on the airplane. The fruit salad was a great addition and made up for the rest.

Legends, which is located near gate 22 at YHZ, which in turn is close to the escalators that lead up there from security and to the escalators that lead down from there to the baggage claim area, is a major disappointment. Service is slow and staff don’t really seem to grasp that customers at an airport usually don’t have a lot of time. I recently ordered a turkey club sandwich there, with a side of seafood chowder — the server who took my order didn’t say anything about wait time, hence I didn’t suspect the worst. Which was a mistake. After a while another patron who had just arrived asked how long it would take to order a meal and he was told, about 25 – 30 minutes. Apparently the food is prepared one meal after the other, in the sequence of ordering, only one meal at a time. So I would have had to wait 25 – 30 minutes for… a turkey club sandwich and a seafood chowder. Seriously?! I strongly assume that all the seafood chowder needs is to be put into the microwave — and in 25 – 30 minutes even I could prepare at the very least five turkey club sandwiches. Seriously, it’s a sandwich, not rocket science. Nothing that needs to be cooked, baked, or even just reheated. I don’t have a clue why staff there are so slow. They had at least three people working there at the time, and, even though they were complaining and complaining all the time how swamped they were, the place was maybe half full, if at all. What the heck would they do if the place was for once really packed? Let you wait for your sandwich for more than an hour? In the end I decided to cancel my order(which they did without complaining, even though they made it seem as if it was my fault that I’m in a hurry at an airport, rather than theirs for needing 25 – 30 minutes to put together a turkey club sandwich and put a soup into the microwave), only paid for my drink, and got a bagel and a croissant at Tim Hortons — which also took a lot longer than it should have, but at least not 25 – 30 minutes. If you are a leisurely retiree who usually arrives at the airport two or three hours before your scheduled departure, you may enjoy Legends. Otherwise, avoid it.

Let’s face it, finding extraordinary food at any airport is a challenge. So at least finding, good, solid food served with a smile and quickly, but not rushed is a HUGE plus. Legends Lounge at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport is open from 6:30 A M right through to the last flight of the day. So whether, like us on an early morning trip to see family, and needing breakfast… or a later flight out and needing a «liquid refreshment» at the bar. This is the place to stop. Service is speedy(as our server said — «it’s our job to get you fed and to your flight on time»), friendly and efficient. In other words — perfect!
