Whimsical Cake Studio

I like Whimsical for the creative array of sweets and their great customer service (the owner is usually there and happy to chat with us). They have a bunch of homemade chocolates (peanut butter cups!), gummies and other candies (bacon pralines!), including cake pops (can’t remember what they are called exactly but they make giant ones with icing in the middle). They also make excellent homemade crème eggs around Easter… be sure to pick some up if you can! Cupcake-​wise I find they are ok — on the drier side but tasty, and they don’t put as much icing as I like (but I know others who prefer less icing). The icing here isn’t as tasty as my favourite place but it is decent.

I came in here on a Sunday morning to pick up a few cupcakes. The man behind the counter wasn’t very friendly. I initially was going to get just two cupcakes, but he snarkingly said, «Is that ALL you want?» so I felt a bit pressured to purchase another one. (Would’ve been nice if he instead asked, «Is there anything else I can get you?»). Needless to say, I did end up getting three cupcakes and just over $ 10 total. They tasted pretty good when I tried them, but I would be hesitant to come back just because of the shoddy customer service.

I think it’s important to note that this bakery came under new ownership and management a year or two ago, so disregard all the stuff before that.
Darcy is amazing. She and the rest of the staff have a passion for what they do. Darcy is always experimenting in the kitchen making all sorts of fun candies and perfecting her recipes. Every month they have a new special flavour.
As of right now there is one flavour of vegan cupcake and it is aweeeesome. I will admit the frosting used to be too dense, but they’ve been doing research and it’s amazing now.
i don’t recommend that you go there– I demand it.
And I swear to God if you park in one of their two parking spots and don’t go to their shop, I will find you and I will beat you.

We stopped by the other day to grab a cupcake and ended up buying 6! Small storefront, but friendly and helpful staff. They were pretty much out of stock for the day so we didn’t have much of a choice for individual cupcakes, hence why we purchased 6. However, the red velvet cupcakes are to die for. They also make a variety of other treats that look quite delicious. And feature quirky decorations (such as the muppets and a painting of a goat) that was really my style. Considering that some cupcake shops charge $ 5 per cupcake, we were perfectly happy paying $ 8 for a pack of 6. I would definitely go back!

I’ve tried many a red velvet cupcake. THESE are by far, the best in Edmonton. There’s mini chocolate chips in the cupcake! Such an awesome, perfect cupcake

I love Whimsical! I had the opportunity to order a Wedding Cake and assorted treats for a candy bar at the wedding and I can’t say enough good things about the quality and the assistance that I received from the staff at Whimsical. The cake was amazing, and we were told that the candy bar at the wedding was the best that anyone had ever seen or tasted! Kudos to Whimsical for the cake pops, the caramels, the cookies, the peanut butter awesomes, the marshmallows etc… I heartily recommend them, oh, and the cupcakes are amazing! I hope that they will continue with the breakfast cereal series of cupcakes … hint… hint!!!

I had Darcy from Whimsical Cakes make a custom cake for my wife’s birthday recently, and it was amazing! I really had no idea what to ask for, but she walked me through a whole bunch of ideas. I still couldn’t decide on anything to make it personal, so she suggested we use pictures from my wife’s instagram account to get some inspiration. What a great idea, and we came up with a great plan from the pictures. I really appreciated Darcy going above and beyond with creativity to make the perfect cake for such a special occasion. Not to mention the cake was stunning and exceeded my expectations.
I’ve had my fair share of caramels from here too, and they’re melt-​in-​your-​mouth delicious. Do yourself a favour and check this place out.

I’ve sampled more than a few Whimsical treats — the cupcakes, the caramels, the cake pops, the peanut butter awesomes — oh lord, those peanut butter awesomes — and everything I’ve tried is worth the hours on the treadmill it takes to work it all off.
In addition to the fantastic little Yums, Whimsical also makes awe-​inspiring custom cakes. To make my 40^th birthday that much more special, my husband went to get a cake made for me. Darcy, the owner and head cake maven, asked him questions about me, and looked at some pictures. Then, she whipped up the perfect cake with a mini-​me sitting atop my cooler with a bottle if Baileys. Perfect! She even included a tattoo on my arm that I had just gotten the week before!
Whimsical should be your first stop if you want a custom cake for any occasion, but don’t wait for a special occasion to stop by, those peanut butter awesomes will make any day a special one.

I feel like one of the only Unilocalers that think these are the best cupcakes in the city! I have tried a number of different shops and I keep coming back to Whimsical. They get the whole thing right! The cake part has always been deliciously dense and moist while the frosting is seriously the best butter cream. They do a sugar frosting too, which is also very good– however I much prefer butter cream. I also cannot comment on the cakes, or the process of dealing with the staff to create something custom, however every time I have been there I have been warmly greeted and well attended to.
I love walking in there and seeing that they have day olds left– half price cupcakes?! Yes! I will most definitely keep bringing these in as office treats. It really boggles me that there have been so many comments about how these are just average cupcakes and that Unilocalers have had better. To you I say give it another try– things may have changed since you were last there. Or don’t, and that just leaves more cupcakes for me! :)

I must admit I have fallen out of love with cupcakes in the last little while due to all the designer cupcake shops that have popped up all over the city due to the cupcake fad. Whimsical however is definitely well on it’s way to winning me back. I came in today for a treat to take to the mister at work downtown but needed something that was easy to take with me on the bus.
The super friendly man at the counter suggested cake pops or cake bombs which are a slightly larger version of a cake pop for those who are not in the know. I got a strawberry for myself and a chocolate for the mister and quickly dived into my strawberry one right away. The inside cake was super moist and the icing on the outside was sweet but not in that tooth decaying way you run into sometimes at different cupcake shops.
The chocolate went over great with the mister and we both liked that Whimsical has resealable paper bags versus those awfully awkward little boxes you get when you buy cake pops at Starbucks.
I will definitely be back for more fabulous and affordable treats from this cute little shop. I think the only way it could get any better was if they came out with some coffee and tea offerings to go with the baked goods. All they appear to offer for beverages at this time is bottled water.

Average cupcake. Not much variety compared to other places. Looks like the cakes are fabulous (but I havent tried them, just seen someone picking ut up).
Came here on a whim. After eating some poutine. The store was quite cute. Small but the displays were a bit boring. It was completly open so you could see the bakers doing their thing.
I normally order red velvet cupcakes by the dozen. But looking at the displays they were not really visually appetizing. The cupcakes looked like cupcakes my friends make at home. The little sweets on top of the cupcakes were a nice touch.
I settled for just one this time. A rarity bc I normally cant walk out without more than 6 in any other store. But the flavours never jumped at me and the portions were kinda tiny.
For $ 3.15 a cupcake it was cheaper than other cupcake shops. The cake was moist but it tasted like the duncan mix you buy at the grocery store. The icing was thick and creamy but didnt really give me the taste of cookue dough but more like a chocolate buttercream. So it was average at best. Personally I would not return unless it was for the cakes. As I enjoy fuss cupcakes or big city cupcakes over this place.

The guy we spoke to when we went in today was really friendly. We stopped in on a whim after doing a river valley walk and having dinner up the street. I immediately gravitated towards the salted caramel cupcake, and my husband got the lemon with strawberry buttercream. I love salted caramel, so I was a little disappointed that the salt wasn’t a more prevalent flavour. The frosting on top was sweet, if a little dry, and the caramel drizzle was on the sticky side. The cupcake itself was s rich dark chocolate, moist and rather tasty. The lemon had actual lemon zest in it, which was nice, and it smelled amazing. However, I prefer the lemon at Over the Top Cakes. It’s got a better texture and a fresher taste. The buttercream was too sweet and and not enough strawberry. If we happen to be in the area, stopping in wouldn’t be out of the question, but we wouldn’t make a special trip.

Oh this store is so freaking cute, I just love it! And with a super central location in the Garneau. The owner is adorable, she is like a living version of her store! I love that they branded themselves as a Cake Studio, because really, a studio is wear an artist works, not a store. And she is most certainly an artist!
While the cakes may be the big ticket item, the front of the house has cookies, cake-pop’s, sweet treats and of course, cupcakes! Now I’m not going to lie, I am a cupcake snob. I have been a customer of Cupcakes in English Bay, Vancouver for over a decade (for those whom don’t know, they are the original cupcake store that started it all!) So I really dislike that so many cupcake shops have popped up in the last few years, often serving ill-​made cupcakes that are too dense (no air pockets), too dry and with icing so sweet it makes you sick. So when I had my first cupcake from Whimsical I was beyond delighted; I was ecstatic! Light, airy and moist with a heavenly butter cream icing that was think and sweet but not too sweet. Perfection!
Oh, and if you need a cupcake fix but are short on $$, ask for Yesterdays Misfits: day old cupcakes, 6 for $ 8!

We had my daughters 1^st birthday cake designed by whimsical and it was a show stopper!!! Three tiers, three flavours with different icings… Yum! Everyone like the classic black&white cake with cookies and cream buttercream the best. And the classic vanilla. And the red velet. So really, all three were a hit. Great service, the cake style was exactly what I wanted and the price was absolutely reasonable for the quality of premium cake. Can’t wait till her second birthday!!!

I’ve had some great experiences at Whimsical. I was a frequent customer at their old Riverbend location before they moved to 109 Street and always found their cupcakes to be good and their staff to be friendly and helpful.
My friends and I were on the way home from school one day and stopped in to get some cupcakes (instead of an actual birthday cake). There were about 12 of us, and I think almost everyone bought one. We ate them right in the (small) store, standing, and ended up making a big mess of crumbs. We apologized for the mess and mentioned we were there for the friend’s birthday. It was late afternoon, so the owner gave us 2 or 3 12-​packs of assorted mini-​cupcakes (that I assume would have otherwise gone to waste), wished the friend a happy birthday, and we went on our way. Gestures like this made me happy to keep coming back!
That said, I don’t go out of my way to spend lots of money on expensive cupcakes often. Are Whimsical’s magically better than everyone else’s at this price point? Probably not, but they’re certainly a nice treat!

I was completely disappointed with this cake shop. I waited until this store opened impatiently and couldn’t wait for a special event to land in my calendar. My auntie offered to buy me a cake for my graduation party a couple years ago and she suggested Whimsical because she sampled their treats at a function.
I went in and flipped through photos of cakes and designed my own cake. It was perfect. I was descriptive in how I wanted the coloured fondant and drew a photo to make my vision clear. The owner was snarky about the fact that I was creating a cake for myself which should have been my first sign. Not impressed with the service. I specified that I wanted a graduation cap made out of a cupcake on top. He said he couldn’t promise that. Excuse me? I’m paying you over $ 300 for cake and you can’t deliver what I am asking?
When my auntie brought it to my party my face dropped. My cake was awful. Not what I wanted at all. The colours were awful and of course the graduation cap on top was /​not/​a cupcake. Thanks for the promise! Sure the cake tasted fine, but I would never order something from there again. What you get is 100% not worth the price.

Instead of just editing my previous review (I moved this place from three stars to two) I thought I’d explain myself a little more.
I’ve tried a couple other cupcake places since my review of Whimsical and that has changed my perspective a lot. Relatively speaking, the cupcakes at Whimsical are pretty sub-​standard.
To me, cupcakes should be light and fluffy, or dense and fluffy, and soft. Somehow, even though the cupcakes at Whimsical are airy and full of big holes, they are not soft or fluffy at all! This is probably because they’re too greasy. Achieving moistness through grease is pretty blech, but that seems to be their strategy. That, along with the lack of flavor (better than Fuss but still not great) and shortening-​flavored icing, I can’t really even give this place an A-​OK.

I stopped in here on a whim (lol) one day for a cupcake, and was pleasantly surprised. I love the cupcakes here! They have a nice selection of cupcake flavours, and a lot of the cupcakes I’ve tried here aren’t overly sweet, which is nice.
They also have a nifty photo album where you can see a lot of the cool custom cakes they’ve made. The staff there are super nice, and satisfied my curiosity by answering the zillion and one questions I had about professional cake-​making.

I have to say that I only drop in for a cupcake as an «indulgence». I can’t really comment on the cakes … though there are always a few of those Food Network decorated cakes on display. I do find myself marvelling at what can be done with fondant.
The cupcakes are a little piece of heaven though. I find myself trying different ones and never being disappointed. I make myself walk past at times or I’d be morbidly obese just living in the neighbourhood.
