Picked up a groupon! Love hotdogs especially ones with macaroni on it! This place was super busy when we went and poor waitress was doing it all! She was super nice though If you haven’t been it is a great experience and super fun atmosphere! We tried 2 different hotdogs and a poutine and would like to go back to try some starters there all sounded lovely!

Went there with my girlfriend a couple weeks ago and we each order a «My Hangover» with a Shake and it was amazing! Gonna go there tomorrow with her when she’s off work and try something new! Any ideas?

Had lunch at the dog and it was fantastic. Ordered the Nautilus seafood dog and I was impressed. The calamari on top was fantastic! The service was great and the food was an okay price for what you got. The deep-fried pickles were delicious and fresh. I will definitely be going back.

Yes!!! My prayers were answered there is actually a great hotdog place in Edmonton(see review on It’ Dog). I actually came here by myself for lunch one afternoon and it was such a great experience. The waitress(older lady, maybe her name was Susan?) was so great and breaking down the menu for me and offering suggestions. The menu is pretty comprehensive and there are a lot of option if you aren’t in the mood for a hot dog… but why you would come here if you weren’t in the mood I don’t know. I tried one of their specials– the Kansas City dog which is basically a Reuben sandwich on a hot dog. *Insert heart eye emoji* Everything about it was delicious, I was particularly impressed with how soft the bun was, I am 99% sure they are from a local bakery. The fries were great, albeit there was A LOT that came with the meal. Like too many for me to finish, though I guess that is better than having too little. I would say the milkshakes are just OK. I think they use flavoured syrups which wasn’t that exceptional, but it was still a great pairing for my meal. Next time you are north of downtown and are looking for a fun, quirky and delicious lunch ch-ch-check out the Dog!

Brought the hubs here last night before the Oilers Game at Rexall for a surprise date night. The décor was cool and the service perfect. So why the 3 stars? I just couldn’t get excited about anything we ordered. We shared the Narita and Trailer Trash Dogs. Both were excellent ideas but missing that extra something to make me ever want to have them again. We ordered the Ukrainian Feast Poutine and I was completely underwhelmed and I love, mean LOVE me some poutine. I ended up letting hubs eat 90% of the first 3 items and opted to order one more appetizer. The waitress suggested the Dog Bones($ 8 dry ribs — about 6 I think?). They were good and I’m glad I had them but again, they don’t leave me yearing to come back. Hubs thought the meal was pretty good but said that he’d want to try different items if we ever came back. I will say the buns were soft and WAY better than It Dog by Whyte Avenue. Maybe, like fellow Unilocaler Dana, I read too many reviews and was too excited that it had nowhere to go but down? Oh well, if you love dogs you should come on out and give this place a try. Same fam jam as Sloppy Hoggs next door :-)

We went there last night. My friend ordered SanFrancisco and I ordered a jalapeño pepper one, don’t remember the name. The waitress was very nice to introduce all kinds of hotdogs after knowing that it was out first time there. Hotdogs were interesting but a bit heavy(well I guess all hotdogs are heavy). The strawberry milkshake was great. I like the place. It’s simple but very intimate. The price wasn’t too bad. I bought the groupon with I paid $ 8 towards $ 15. I might go there again to try different flavors.

I picked up a groupon for The Dog on a whim because who doesn’t love hot dogs? It’s a bit of a trek into the city for me(from Sherwood Park) but overall it was fairly easy to find. We went on a Thursday evening and it was fairly empty. The service was great, the waitress was super friendly and helpful. It’s pretty reasonably priced for what you get. There are tons of great options on the menu even if some of the more exotic sausages maybe aren’t your own personal cup of tea. I ordered the San Francisco dog and it was super delicious, and super filling. In hindsight I probably wouldn’t have ordered an appetizer too since both me and my friend were so full afterwards. If i’m ever in the area again I will totally head back.

Maybe I had built it up too much in my head? I just wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be. We ordered the Trailer Trash and The Hot Dog to split, as well as deep fried pickles. The pickles were lacking flavour, but overall okay. The Hot Dog comes with pit beans & pulled pork. The beans seemed to have a bit of a spice to them, which I enjoyed. The pork was flavourful but incredibly dry. Surprisingly though, this one was my favourite of the two we tried. The Trailer Trash has mac & cheese and bacon on it. How could we go wrong with that? Sadly, the Mac & Cheese was not very flavourful and left the whole dish tasting kind of bland. On both dishes, the hot dog was incredibly tasty and juicy! The poutines and appetizers look really good though. So do the desserts. I will be back at some point to try out some other things on the menu!

I’ve heard barkings(sorry for the lame pun) about The Dog for quite a few months now. It opened in March but I wasn’t in any rush try them out as I’m not the biggest fan of hot dogs. Sorry, gourmet hot dogs. Well, I was meeting up with my friend A for some lunch and gave her a couple options to choose from. After checking them all out, she picked The Dog as she’s never been and was craving hot dogs. Talk about perfect timing to try them out. Sister restaurant to Sloppy Hoggs, they’re pretty much next door neighbours(you’ll spot The Dog slightly east of Sloppy Hoggs). It has a couple tables set up outside, which is perfect for some patio sitting. We went on a beautiful, sunny Wednesday for lunch and of course, took advantage and sat outside. I really dig the setup as the tables are in shady areas and have umbrellas for the ones that are out in the sun. The menu is pretty straightforward — signature city dogs, sausages, appetizers, salad and fries/poutine. All their dogs are beef or mixed beef/pork but don’t fret, you can still eat here if your vegetarian as they have tofuturkey and falafels available. What caught my eye on the menu was the specials but sadly they’re only available after 4pm. Daily specials include: Tuesday(5pm to close) — buy 1 dog, get 2nd dog 50% off Wednesday(4pm to close) — City dog, float and fries = $ 10.00 Thursday(5pm to close) — any City dog includes free fries Friday and Saturday(all day) — City dog, fries and a pint = $ 12.00 Sunday(all day) — 10% off poutine — Fried dill pickles($ 6.00), slider dogs($ 8.00) and falafel($ 10.00) — deep fried dill pickle spears with a side of creamy cucumber sauce. They were lightly fried on the outside and had a nice crunchy bite to them. I ordered the Slider dogs as it seemed like the best way to sample a few of their signature dogs. From left to right, the dog’s were the New York, Coney Island and Seattle. The New York had onions and yellow mustard on top. Coney Island consisted of beef chili, cheddar cheese, diced onion and yellow mustard. Seattle had cream cheese and caramelized onions. I found all three to be pretty simplistic and ordinary. Not much to get excited about. My friend A ordered the falafel dog which came with lettuce, avocado, kimchi, sesame sauce and fresh mint leaves. Interesting choice of toppings with the kimchi and mint leaves. A little bit of an Asian twist to the falafel. I didn’t have a taste but she really liked it. Verdict? A couple other bloggers were comparing It’Dog to The Dog. Which is better? Truthfully, both are pretty average in my books. I don’t get the hype on gourmet dogs but that might be just me. I’d like to come back to try one of their specials(Wednesday looks the best) but I won’t be rushing back anytime soon. Apparently, there is a takeout special($ 20.00 for four hot dogs and coleslaw). Too bad you can’t get that when you stay to eat…

Great hot dogs. Good appetizer menu. Decent prices. Awesome patio. Comfy leather seats. Located on the everchanging 118 ave nearest one of busiest streets in edmonton(97 st) the locale is quite conveinent. Theres only 3 parking spaces but dont worry theres tons of residential free parking in this area. Once inside its a cool black and silver vibe with rock music playing. Its probably a great place for a quick bite. The huge leather couches were so comfortable. Fluffy and large: I wanted to sprawl out on the hot summer day. the city dogs are very reasonably priced. At $ 6 to $ 8. Its pretty cheap. You can add fries or an assortment of sides for less than $ 5 each. But the daily specials are a great deal. Who doesnt like beer and fries for $ 4??? The hot dogs themselves are actually really good. They have that snap when you bite into them but are moist and juicy inside. The toppings are good but the combinations were very interesting and innovative. They put freshly melted cheese, bacon, kim chi, seawood, ramen, fruit, pickled anything, even mac and cheese on them. I would love to see a food truck as this idea is fantastic for on the go bites. Personally my asian inspired dog was actually pretty good. Probably making my hot dog worthy of going to a restaurant. I must warn you that the ramen noodles were just those dry instant noodles smashed up a bit. I was super curious as to the execution of this dish. And i have to say i was pleased. The hot dogs are big too. One hot dog was super filling and i could barely touch my fries. I noticed other people not finishing them at other tables too. They have exotic meat sausages like kangaroo or elk too. Its pretty unique. Ive tried it at their sister restaurant next door and think the hot dog idea would make them more tasty. The appetizer menu looks really appetizing. Great for groups i wanted to try them all… but sadly i have only one stomach. I hope to revisit again to try them! Come with a hungry group bc those appies sound delicious! They also sell pickled veggies or different homemade sauces. To try and make stuff at home. Really cool! I wanted to buy a few things but ill have to come back as i was planning a day out and truffled mayo would go bad in a hot car :( Overall service was great. Fast and friendly but a tad on the let you be on your own type of service. I had to ask to order, and to get utensils and was never really checked on until after the meal.(Sorry my kids got braces so he needs a fork and knife to eat his hot dog). For this i minused a star. But its a good concept and kind of gives you that carnival option year round. But if they want to make the big bucks… they should invest in a food truck as i would totally line up for these dogs with all the great festivals edmonton has. And a hot dog is the portable food out there! But its a good choice for a quick bite thats just as fast as fast food but made to order like a restaurant. Great hot dogs will bring me back again.

Some may think a hotdog is just a hotdog. I say BLASPHEMY! All hotdogs are NOT treated equal. Case in point — The Dog. I consider myself a savant when it comes to a good hotdog. From sight only I can tell if it’s going to be good or not. So when I was presented with my Seattle Dog — I knew instantly that this bad boy was going to be epic. As always, my eyes didn’t deceit me. When I began my adventure to hotdog heaven, I was greeted by a perfect ratio of bun to meat. Each bite was a blessing in my mouth. The wiener was spiced right and the bun was soft. Did you know this place has a local butcher make all of their wieners? Sweet huh? Did you also know that their more exotic stuff is made in-house? Did you also know The Dog makes their own buns… daily? Cue the mindblown. The Oilers could take note, heck any hotdog vendor should be taking notes — homemade wieners, homemade buns, killer condiments equals taste sensation!!! But this is not where my review ends. I have seen the transformation of 118 ave from the 90s where it was unsafe to venture down this avenue at anytime of the day. The community has done a fantastic job in revitalizing this historic community. Seeing The Dog take up residence on this avenue enhances the community. Their store front is adorned with flowers, outdoor seating and a fantastic atmosphere. Top that off with a unbelievable waitress — Susan — THe Dog is a winner in my books. I will be back, many times.

We heard about this place from a friend and decided to go there for lunch today. Our appetizer was home made chips with a delicious dill dip. I had a San Francisco dog that had avocado, bacon, mozzarella and tomato. My husband had a Coney Island dog that was part of the special of the day(dog, fries and a pint of beer). The customer service was good, they were very busy but they hustled and were still pleasant. We really enjoyed our dogs and we will definitely return to try other items from the menu.

So today I had a mighty desire for a burger. However we weren’t able to find any places we haven’t already tried. My wife found«The Dog» a few weeks ago and instead suggested it. The location is tucked back a bit behind another building connected to it, going eastbound on 118. So we passed it and it’s three car parking lot. Luckily the next street over has parking, so we parked and walked over. The front of the location has available outdoor seating. However we opted to eat inside to escape the hot day. Unfortunately I think there is no air conditioning as the inside was just as oppressive temperature wise as outside. Immediately we were kindly greeted by a server behind the counter who told us we can sit anywhere. No sooner did we pick our seating, we were instantly greeted by our server with equally superb quality customer service. She got us a high chair for our son, water for all of us and gave us our menus. Soon after she came back to take our order, which we gave her. I forget what my wife got but I selected the kangaroo sausage. Our order came to us quite quickly actually, surprisingly quick. The fries were piping hot and tasted great. My roo sausages topping was very delicious and the roo sausage was seasoned beautiful. If we could say one negative, is that the hot dog/sausage were on the dry/overcooked side. Almost as if they had been sitting for too long. But the flavor alone was extremely solid and delicious. Even with the dryness I will most definitely return as I enjoy supporting business that has great customer service. Not to mention it really helps elevate the area and show that Alberta Ave/118 area is working on a proper gentrification of the area.

I’ve been to The Dog a couple times now and I have to say I’m not only super impressed with the menu, the prices, the restaurant itself, but the staff is awesome. The first time I came here to review The Dog for an article in the Rat Creek Press(shameless plug the article is on page 9: ). I loved my experience here so much that when my friends suggested going for dinner here last week I was all in. On my last visit I got the Chicago signature dog, which is a hot dog on a bun with sport peppers, tomato slices, relish, and mustard. I’ve never been to Chicago before, so I thought it would be fun to try a Chicago-style dog. The hot dog itself has a good snap, and is juicy without being greasy. The sport peppers are a little spicy, but nothing unbearable. The buns are freshly made, and soft and sweet. At only $ 6 for this hot dog it’s pretty reasonably priced, and leaves you with enough room for an appetizer or dessert. I went for dessert and got the bread pudding with the bourbon sauce, which had a strong taste of bourbon(note for those who might be fans of bourbon that this might not be the dessert for you). The bread pudding is sliced thinly and fried and served with a bourbon cream sauce. It’s very rich, but delicious. Aside from the food menu, which also includes exotic sausage fare like alligator and kangaroo, patrons at The Dog can also buy the condiments that they use on their hot dogs(and all the condiments they use are made in-house). The first time I came here I got a hot dog that featured pushcart onions, which is an onion relish that’s a little sweet and spicy. I bought a small jar for $ 7(there was also a larger jar for $ 9). There are other condiments, including pickles, as well as The Dog T-shirts available for sale. What I’ve come to really love about The Dog though is the staff. The waitress we had was super friendly and eager to explain the menu for my friends who hadn’t been there before. When we went to leave I got into my car and I saw the waitress step outside and wave at me. Turns out I forgot my pushcart onions inside. Oops. I’m glad the waitress come out and found me, not something every restaurant might do. Aside from the small parking lot(which can only hold a couple of cars) there isn’t anything really negative I can say about The Dog. The food is good, the menu has some pretty cool hot dog variations(The Narita is fantastic as well), the portions are good, the prices very reasonable, and the staff is fantastic. The Dog is a fun restaurant to pop into. I’m looking forward to my next visit.

The Dog is the newest hot dog place to come to Edmonton. Japadogs are already very popular in Vancouver, and even at K-days you can get Asian-themed hot dogs there! Tubby Dog in Calgary has been around since 2005 and is fairly popular there. We do have Fat Franks here, but when it comes to Gourmet hot dogs, we’ve only recently entered the scene. It Dog came to Edmonton this last year, another Asian-themed hot dog place. The Dog is a nice addition to the city with their various toppings and hot dogs. They also have a fair amount of vegetarian hot dogs! They are located on 9567118 Avenue and are literally right beside Sloppy Hoggs Roed Hus(I think they may even share a wall). They are actually the same owners are Sloppy Hoggs! Super convenient! All of their hot dogs are supplied by Real Deal meats, a local butcher, and their exotic hot dogs(Kangaroo, Elk, Wild Boar, Alligator) are made in house. They also make their pickles and relishes in house too! I came here with my friend, so I only got to try two hot dogs, and we shared some onion rings and the Rhodesian Porkball. The Narito is one of the hot dogs that we settled on. It’s a beef and pork hot dog, with wasabi mayo, kim chi, sesame sauce, do chua, pickled ginger, bonito flakes, and ramen noodles. My first bite I just wanted to try the hot dog itself so that I could compare it to the other hot dogs that I’ve had. The hot dog was nice and tasty. Well seasoned, and it had a good texture. I’d say much better than the hot dog at It Dog. The ones there were a little bit to glutenous and gummy, maybe too much filler or binding. To be fair though, these hot dogs are supplied by a local butcher. The rest of the hot dog actually went nicely together. I had a bit of Kim Chi in my first couple bites, but then afterwards, everything just got lost in everything else. I really liked the do chua and pickled ginger. There was maybe a tad too much ginger but it gave a nice contrasting flavour. The ramen bits were really just there for presentation and to give it a little bit of extra crunch which was nice! One thing I’d have to say is that the bun is a bit lacking, and maybe an upgraded bun might be worth while…

It has been almost a month now since I first visited The Dog, Edmonton’s newest gourmet hotdog eatery, but the lunch was memorable enough for me to write about it! The 118 Avenue shop is a sister restaurant to Sloppy Hoggs Roed Hus BBQ(a hop away from The Dog) and to catering business Absolutely Edibles(previous tenant of the space). Having recently opened mid-March, The Dog offers a variety of sausages — from classics using all beef or beef and pork dogs to your Italian or Bratwurst sausage, all the way to exotic animal dogs like elk, kangaroo, wild boar, alligator, and even a seafood sausage. A group of us went out for lunch that day, covering our bases and all trying different dogs. Buns are baked fresh daily, in-house and hotdogs are made by local butcher Real Deal Meats in south Edmonton. The menu was quite extensive and I was pleased that The Dog’s main focus is on hotdogs and sausages! Appetizers are also available to order: the chips & dip were crispy(think Boston Pizza’s Cactus Cut Potatoes without the heat, yum!) and the dill pickle dip was bursting with flavour; the stuffed spicy cream cheese poblano poppers came out piping hot and had just the right amount of heat. Both solid starters! I ordered the«Hog Dog», a classic beef and pork hotdog with pit beans, pulled pork, shredded marbled cheese, and waffle sauce. Boy, was it loaded. I had expected the waffle sauce to be a bit sweeter, the maple flavours barely pulling through but by the end of the meal, I was glad that it was made the way it was. The sweetness in the pit beans and pulled pork was enough in addition to the sauce, making the hotdog palatable all the way to the end! The bun was pillow-y soft, but nothing outstanding or exemplary. Andrea had the«Narita», a beef and pork dog topped with wasabi mayo, kimchi, sesame sauce, «do chua»(literally means«sour stuff» in Vietnamese, or otherwise known as pickled vegetables), pickled ginger, bonito flakes, and ramen noodles. Oh my goodness, what?! Out of all of us, I think Andrea was the most skeptical about her choice and definitely the most surprised as how the flavour combinations all worked together and texturally, the most exciting. Don’t be scared of this dog’s extreme Asian flavours! Linda’s «Coney Island» all-beef hotdog had a generous amount of beef chili, cheddar cheese, yellow mustard and diced onions. No complaints from her! And how could she? Classic toppings that would make a New Yorker proud. The«Banh Mi» hotdog was actually what drew me into the joint and I think a lot of us were expecting this to be amazing. A little let down, Diane thought the headcheese was cut a little too thick and the meats cut unevenly, and the whole dog was overwhelmed with mayo. I was more interested in the flavour of the pâté, but alas, there didn’t really seem to be any to taste or note of. Sad face. Addie ordered the«Kansas City», an all-beef hotdog with sauerkraut, cheese, Reuben sauce and caraway seeds. By the time we all got our hotdogs(well timed for our group of 6, I might add), we all got the sense that The Dog loved their sauces. No shortage of sauces and toppings here! Somehow Lesley was the only one who ordered a wild game sausage. Her kangaroo sausage was infused with fresh herbs, topped with red peppers, a corn relish and a raspberry chipotle mustard. For $ 12, she didn’t think it was worth it as the raspberry chipotle mustard the corn relish overpowered the taste of the dog, but nevertheless, a good hotdog to try. The whole back wall is beautifully lined with housemade pickles, relishes, and mustards which are for sale and used on numerous dogs. For those less adventurous or would prefer to make their our flavour combinations, you can build your own hotdog using the list of toppings available for the day. A choice of all beef, beef and pork, or veggie dog is available for the custom hotdog. Vegetarians also have options like the Falafel Dog and a Tofuturkey dog or garlic sausage to order and The Dog didn’t forget about those who have Celiac or are gluten-intolerant, offering a gluten free bun for an additional $ 1.25. None of us added sides to our orders(fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings) that day, definitely something I will try next time I visit! Overall, the atmosphere was very rock-and-roll meets diner-esque and service was excellent. For gourmet hotdogs, I’d choose The Dog over IT’Dog(although I would return for their Korean Fried Chicken!) and all of my lunchmates agreed. If you’re going to have«dog» in your name, better serve up right! The selection and variety of flavours and different kinds of sausages warrants The Dog a visit, and definitely more than once if you want to try something classic(starts at $ 6) as well as their wild game sausages(up to $ 15). Next time I want to try the wild boar!

This restaurant hasn’t been open for very long, but already they’ve set themselves apart from the competition because of some of the more interesting toppings and meat combinations available! I had a very flavourful alligator dog with collards on it(but without the dill mustard that normally comes on it) and it was remarkably good. I loved the collards so much! I also shared a pretzel with a friend and it was just as good as a pretzel ought to be: warm and soft! I liked the quirkiness of the location, the listing on the blackboard of toppings and other options, the fun tables(and the Ms PacMan table game!) along with the décor in general. The staff members seemed genuinely happy to be there and quite efficient at their jobs. This location also sells pie in a jar(which I’ve seen friends devouring!) and has some pretty interesting vegetarian options as well. The condiments/pickles etc. are also for sale in jars which has got to be an appeal. I would totally come back to try the other interesting hot dog options!

Having just opened up over a week ago, The Dog has taken over the spot previously occupied by Absolutely Edibles. As it turns out, The Dog is actually owned by the same people that owned Absolutely Edibles and Sloppy Hoggs Roed Hus just down the street. Sounds like Absolutely Edibles needed a refresh and a new concept to bring in more traffic to the location. Although I never visited Absolutely Edibles, I’m told that the interior has taken on quite the change. The new space is diner-esque, with metal accents, small tables and seating up at the bar. There’s plenty of seating available, but also lots of space where more tables could be placed to accommodate more patrons. The menu here is vast and there is bound to be some combination of toppings on a hot dog to suit your taste. And if it doesn’t, you can customize your own hot dog from a large list of toppings and different condiments. All the hot dogs are made by local Real Deal Meats, while the wild game hot dogs are made in house. In addition to the wild hot dogs, the pickles, relishes, and mustards are made in house and the buns are baked fresh in house too. Awesome! Ordered some Chips & Dip($ 6) to start, which was housemade potato chips served with dill pickle dip. The thin sliced chips were lightly fried, with some being crisp and others still soft in the middle. I was expecting a thinner cut on the chips so that they would be completely crisp, but I didn’t mind the softer texture. They were seasoned well with a bit of a kick and the dill pickle dip was both refreshing and flavourful. We also ordered the Banh Mi Hot Dog($ 7) which featured a beef and pork dog, head cheese, pâté, mayo, cucumber slices, do chua(translated literally as sour things in Vietnamese), jalapenos, and cilantro. This was my original pick since I love a good banh mi, but she made her choice before I did. Although we had high hopes for it, the head cheese was cut quite thickly, and given that the texture was similar to the hot dog it was lost in each bite. There was little to no pâté either, and the mayo was quite overpowering in flavour. We had such high hopes for this one! For myself I ordered the Narita Hot Dog($ 7), which was wasabi mayo, kimchi, sesame sauce, do chua, pickled ginger, bonito flakes and ramen noodles on a beef and pork dog. I honestly was so skeptical about ordering it because the combination didn’t sound like it would work together. But I was proven wrong and this was the favourite hot dog out of all the ones we ordered. Although the kimchi and bonito flakes were practically non-existent, the sesame sauce, pickled ginger and do chua gave the hot dog a tangy, sweet flavour that balanced out the salty hot dog. The asian flavours worked really well and I enjoyed the crunch from the crushed ramen noodles. We also tried the Kangaroo Sausage($ 12) which is made with a blend of fresh herbs. The hot dog is topped with red pepper, corn relish, and raspberry chipotle mustard. Although the hot dog itself was great, the condiments were very messy and quite tangy, masking the flavour of the kangaroo sausage. It was quite sour and definitely needed something to cut through the acidity. Next we tried the Coney Island Hot Dog($ 8), made with a beef dog, beef chili, cheddar cheese, yellow mustard and diced onion. The combinations weren’t too far off from your typical hot dog, so it was quite enjoyable. Look at all that cheese! The Dog definitely doesn’t skimp on their toppings. The Kansas City Hot Dog($ 7) featured sauerkraut, cheese, reuben sauce, and caraway seeds on a beef dog. The reuben sauce was oozing out of the hot dog, so you’ve been warned — don’t order this on a first date. The ingredients weren’t overly exciting, but the combination worked well together and tasted great. The last hot dog was the Hog Dog($ 8), a beef and pork hot dog with pit beans, pulled pork, shredded cheese, and waffle sauce. Like the name implies, the waffle sauce has a maple syrup flavour to it, but she was hoping for more of the sweetness to come through. Again the ingredients weren’t too exciting, but there was plenty of pulled pork and cheese to make this hot dog quite substantial. For sit-down lunch, service was quick and the hot dogs were decent. Running at $ 7-$ 12 depending on your toppings, The Dog is quite affordable and a nice place to stop for a quick bite to eat if you’re in that area of the city. I should also mention that they cater to vegetarian(falafel and tofurkey dogs!) and gluten free diets as well, which is really great to see at a place selling hot dogs. At the back of the restaurant there is a large shelf with a selection of condiments used on the hot dogs. From hot and spicy roasted red pepper mustard to roasted garlic chipotle corn relish, there are so many unique choices you can buy and take home.

We stopped in here for lunch after Seedy Sunday at the Alberta Ave Community League. 118 Ave is growing and revitalizing every year and I think that The Dog is going to be a great addition to the Ave. I experienced Tubby Dog in Calgary a few years ago and was hoping that the gourmet hotdog phase would make its way up to Edmonton. Tubby Dog had some great stuff and I was glad when ‘It Dog opened up(which I haven’t tried yet) and then I heard about The Dog. Great news for hot dog lovers and foodies! The Dog is in the old space of Absolutely Edibles and run by the same owners. They are very conscious of Celiac disease and food allergies so we have always felt comfortable eating at their restaurants. The décor is pretty cool, kind of like a modern diner feel to it. They also have a lot of their in-house condiments for sale. Prices range from $ 7 – 12. They make their own condiments in house, and they bake the bread in house, and they make some of their own specialty(elk, wild boar, alligator) sausages, with the other hot dogs made by Real Deal meats. I like that they have such control over everything that they serve. I had the Hog Dog and my date had the Gluten Free San Fran Dog. Here’s was provided on an Udi’s gluten free bun and she was quite happy with it(her review forthcoming!). There are many interesting spins on the hot dog here. I do want to try most of them eventually and will be back here for sure. I found their beef and pork hotdog to be more like a sausage than what I expected form a hotdog(it had a coarser grind making it more chewy). Not necessarily a bad thing just not what I expected. All in all, it was a great experience and I look forward to these new hot dog joints in Edmonton. The Dog has a huge interesting menu to choose from. Definitely worth the visit if you are a hot dog fan!

Edmonton’s newest gourmet hotdog and sausage restaurant. This is a Sister restaurant to Sloppy Hoggs and Absolutely Edibles, in the Absolutely Edibles old space. The décor reminded me a bit of an old style diner or ice cream shop with Original 16 on tap. The menu is pretty fantastic. There are some creative appies(Puppy Nuts) and some really great poutine like items called«The Dogs Breakfast». You have the beef and pork«Signature Dogs» like the Coney Island, New York, Chicago, San Francisco etc. Each regional dog has the distinct flavors of that region. $ 6 each. Hot dogs are made by Real Deal Meats. The Signature Dogs are sausages that are stuffed in house. They are available in such meats as; kangaroo, alligator, elk and wild boar. There are blends as well, I tried the«Nautilus» which was a sausage stuffed with pieces of lobster, snow crab, tiger prawn and scallops. The sausage is grilled and then topped with Calamari and drizzled with Remoulade. My husband had the Alligator which was topped in collard greens that are cooked in a ham hock broth. You can also build your own dog and they have many different types of hand made pickles, mustard and relish for all different kinds of tastes. These are also available canned in mason jars for you to purchase and take home. We picked up some Chipotle Raspberry Mustard($ 6) and some Bacon Peach relish($ 9). They haven’t got the list or the pricing hammered out yet, our Server said it would probably be a couple of weeks before the price list was available. There are vegan and gluten free options available on the menu. They did not have the dessert menu ready when we were there but our Server said it was delicious and that we should come back soon to try it. We will certainly be back, our Signature Dogs were delish!
