The Art of Cake

I thought I can have 4 cupcakes but basically I just ate the red velvet. It is nice to find a nice cupcake place when u just moved to a new city. Red velvet is my only favorite and I think their RV cupcake is just fine, in a good way. The cake is a bit too damp for me and the frosting is a bit too sticky. But I have to say the strawberry rhubarb bar truely blew me away! You can literally taste the fruity sweetness and even the fibre. It is truely amazing as a dessert!
In all, it’s a nice place to go, they make the cupcakes ever morning, so visit it during ur lunch time ;)

Holy friggen cupcake! Where has Art of Cake been all my life? Apparently hiding in the lower level back corner of City Centre mall!
Let me start with mentioning a few of the flavours. Chocolate peanut butter, cookies n cream, red velvet, vanilla coconut, raspberry, lemon, birthday cake confetti… Wait, there’s more… Salted caramel, banana peanut butter bacon, and New York cheesecake. And there’s seriously more but if that doesn’t have your mouth watering…
There’s more! Squares, cookies, and probably the most amazing «new» thing I’ve tried… Coconut covered jujubes! Do they sell these in a bag? I don’t know, but I’ma find out real soon!
Everything I tried was delicious, and not as sickening sweet as some places. I mean, don’t kid yourself, this is sugar central, but it’s not overkill sweetness.
Of course, given their name, the make stunning cakes that you can see on their social media.
Definitely go to art of cake, and don’t even dream of walking out with «just one».

OMG I just had the BEST scone in a long long time, from here! It was raspberry & white chocolate and it was perfectly sweet (meaning not too much or too little); was moist (I know some people hate that word but I can’t think of another descriptor at this point); and a good portion to boot!
Alongside that I have to always get their whipped shortbread cookies with raspberry (apparently I love all things with raspberry?!) because they are so buttery and delicate and melt in your mouth!
The third item I always purchase is their lemon almond squares because they are also executed perfectly!
*sigh* what’s not to love about treats that are made well and priced well accordingly =)
Come check this tiny place out in Edmonton City Centre, at the bottom floor of the mall close to the parkade entrance and food court!

Edmonton has its fair share of delicious baked good peddlers but very few of them can compete with the variety and creativity of the goodies at the Art of Cake. The bakery features a huge selection of cake pieces, cupcakes, cookies, squares and myriad other treats with a selection that changes from day to day.
What truly makes the Art of Cake special is the rate at which they’re constantly showcasing new things and providing different and exciting things to make choosing just one or two things very challenging. My personal favourite treats are the crullers which are light, delicious and only available a couple days per week. Their cookies and bars are also incredible and change frequently so while it’s hard to pick a favourite and return for it another day, there will always be something to tempt you.
It’s hard to call a bakery in a mall a «hidden gem» but as it is tucked away in the corner of the bottom floor, it’s easy to miss. Don’t make the mistake of passing it by! There is almost certainly something there for everyone and appreciating the little shop definitely requires multiple trips.

I was really disappointed in my brief Art of Cake experience. The product is fantastic, can’t deny that… but the customer service was pretty terrible.
My best friend and I are planning to order a cake for a bridal shower, and after speaking with the owner via email, went to meet with her while she had a booth set up at a bridal show.
We arrived and approached her booth (note: it was COMPLETELY dead at this show) and we were completely ignored. We tried to make eye contact and get her attention (we knew she could see us lingering at her booth, she was chatting with another vendor) and nothing. We decided to wander to another booth and come back… we watched as another couple passed by her booth and she jumped at the chance to talk to them. What the hell? Makes me wonder if we’d have gotten better service with a man with us. Men = money? I dunno.
We went back and thought if we take some samples maybe she’ll be interested in talking to us… nope. We finally had a chance to ask her some questions (the other couple left and there was nobody else around) and even then, she showed no interest in helping us. I felt like we were annoying her by asking questions. My friend complimented her on the flavor of the samples, and she just sort of stared at us. Uh, you’re welcome?
She told us to email her if we wanted a quote, so the next day my friend did just that. 3 weeks later, NO answer.
We’re looking forward to the beautiful cake that will be made for us by the incredibly friendly people at Whimsical Cake Studio.

I go to City Center on a regular basis and I always stop at The Art of Cake. Yes, their cupcakes are fantastic (try the Elvis with peanut butter and bacon for something different & tasty) but I have sampled almost everthing and have yet to be disappointed. Their Macaroons are the best, just tried the petit fours — wonderful, and now I am addicted to the white chocolate cocount covered jujubes. Their squares and bars are fresh & tasty. I also visit them regualerly at the downtown market where I have scooped up apple pie and scones. The young woman who works there always remembers me and points out new products. Love this place!

I came here a couple years ago and I wasn’t thrilled with the cupcake I ate; it was dry. I didn’t come here again until yesterday. I just happened to walk by and noticed cake pops in the glass display. I love cake pops so I decided to try one as well as try two mini cupcakes. The cake pop and mini cupcakes were actually moist and pretty much melted in my mouth. This is a huge improvement from the last cupcake I had here. It looks like I’ll be coming back here to get an occasional treat!

This is an amazing cake shop in city center mall. If you are downtown and craving sweets check it out! They have more than just cupcakes.
I was surprised by the variety of sweets they have. Lots of flavor options for cupcakes.
Including gluten free and vegan!
They also have various baked goods: bars, cookies, macaroons, biscotti.
I tried the gluten free cupcake and it was amazing!
Very moist and tasty. Most gluten free baking is so dry. Not the case for this cupcake. The icing is creamy and delicious.
It is a cute little shop in the corner of city center mall basement. The staff are very friendly.
I will definitely be back!

The Art of Cake is a very pretty little shop tucked away in a corner of City Center Mall. I stopped by with my husband and a friend because we were drawn in by how appealing the shop was.
We impulse-​purchased two cupcakes, and they have to be some of the best cupcakes I’ve ever had. Super moist, full of flavor (we got birthday cake and an Oreo cupcake) and best of all was the icing. It wasn’t too sweet, or too rich, it was perfect. Prices are also great: $ 3.50 for a share-​able cupcake, or $ 1.75 for a mini cupcake sweet treat. Stop here to satisfy a sweet tooth craving, you won’t regret it.

The Art of Cake has the best cupcakes in the city, hands down. They’re always fresh (the first time I was in, the woman at the till was talking to their baker, who was finishing up a fresh batch — at 3:00 in the afternoon!) and they’re always amazing.
The selection varies depending on what’s already sold out for the day, but I highly recommend the salted caramel, lemon meringue, and strawberry shortcake cupcakes. I haven’t tried The Art of Cake’s other offerings, but their cupcakes are moist and not too sweet, and their icing (which varies from flavour to flavour) never tastes waxy or artificial.
EDIT: I also really like the black forest cupcakes, and the red velvet ones are always a hit at parties!
Their prices and location are killer, too — I now buy their cupcakes for almost every special occasion! And, okay, also some not-​so-​special occasions. (What? They’re only $ 18 for 6!)

I love cupcakes and I enjoy sharing them with my daughter. I had key lime. The cupcake was plain vanilla, it was moist and heavy like a sponge cake. While it was a nice cake I do prefer a flavoured cake for my cupcake. The icing was not a buttercream or a cream cheese. It was smooth and had a nice taste of lime but found it a little sweet.
My daughter’s Oreo was a chocolate cake. She liked the cake but found the icing too sweet.
I am not sure if I would go back as I find chocolate and vanilla cupcakes boring. Price was in line with other cupcake places.

On a quick jaunt through City Centre I had a craving for cupcakes! And what better way to find one than Unilocal!
It just so happened that it was right around the corner from where I was, so I popped in for a gander.
I was cheerfully greeted by two young ladies up to their elbows in caramel corn. They asked if I needed help finding anything and boy did I need help! There were at least 15 different cupcakes to choose from. Both girls told me what their favourites were and recommended some popular ones.
They all looked so fresh and delicious; it was the hardest decision to narrow it down to one… So I went with 4!
I decided with Black Forrest, Lemon, Chocolate Coconut and Vanilla Coconut.
I’ve only tasted the Vanilla Coconut so far. It was rich and moist! Very decadent and heavy so I suggest maybe sharing one with someone.
They also offer mini cupcakes of the same flavours, maybe next time I will do that!
I will most certainly be back to this lovely little shop!

I’m writing this review from two different perspectives.
The first is as a customer at their City Centre store front. It is located downstairs by the food court of the East side of the mall. It’s really tiny, so if there’s a lineup it can get pretty cramped.
In the store you can purchase full size and mini cupcakes, along with an assortment of pastries and squares. I’ve only tried the cupcakes, so that’s all I can comment on. The cake is always moist and flavourful. And the icing… oh, the icing. It’s not super thick and heavy like some places. It’s a really nice treat when you’re having a bad day and need a pick-​me-​up.
The second side of my review is from the Wedding world. I work with a wedding planner and The Art of Cake is definitely one of my favourite vendors for the cakes. Whether it’s cakes or cupcakes, they can make wedding parties and guests happy for sure. During the set up, they always delivery in a timely fashion and set up the cake so it looks beautiful.
Now, if you don’t mind, I’m going to dig into my vanilla cupcake with coconut icing which is also dipped in coconut :) :)

The Art of Cake is located in the same unit at City Center Mall as the now defunct Big City Cupcakes was and I am not a hundred percent sure how I feel about it. I think they either bought the cupcake recipes from Big City or some of the former employees still work there as they are pretty much exactly the same with the exception of the addition of a few new flavors. The cake is still nice and moist plus their icing isn’t as sweet as when they were being put out by Big City.
While The Art of Cake did not bring back the ice cream they still offer a pretty nice selection of other treats like macaroon’s, muffins, danishes, and cinnamon buns which is nice if you want a baked treat but aren’t a fan of icing. They also do high quality professionally decorated cakes here that would look great at any birthday party or graduation.
We have only bought from here a few times and while the staff were polite they definitely don’t have the same warmth that we got from the girls at the former Big City Cupcakes who could remember what we liked without having to order it and would laugh and joke with us like friends. Still the products here are quite decent in both appearance and taste so perhaps I just need a few more visits to adjust to the change.

Full disclosure: I have never been to The Art of Cake’s storefront, and I have never tried their cake.
But…I have been to their farmer’s market stand every week since the 104 st market opened for the summer (the booth is located on the east side of 104 st near the Blue Plate Diner).
What I have found from my weekly splurges is that the cinnamon buns are ok — kind of dry and not super flavourful with an overly sweet icing. The danishes are better — light and airy and moist, but with what tastes like the same overly sweet icing. They also have cookies and coconut macaroons that are good, but nothing mind-​blowing.
What did blow my mind was the white chocolate, coconut covered jube jubes. These little morsels are so inventive and the perfect treat when I’m looking for something sweet.
The ladies at the booth are always very friendly (even going so far as to take my name and number to let me know when they would have the jube jubes at the market again), and very generous with the free samples.
