Moksha Yoga Edmonton

The worst customer service treatment I’ve ever had.
My girlfriend and I showed up early to attend the 7:30pm class as a drop in on Friday on the West side. We reach to open the door and it’s locked. We can see several people and their children waiting inside as the 7pm class was ending.
We were looked at by the staff several times and no one came to the door. Finally after waiting and not being acknowledged, we knock on the glass. The lady working sticks up two fingers «Two minutes». Needless to say, we got in our cars and left.
I will not be giving these people the satisfaction of paying $ 15 drop in fee ever.

It’s hot, it’s repetitive, I don’t really like the whole «hot yoga» thing… but, for those who do, I can’t imagine a nicer place to do it.
This studio is absolutely gorgeous! It is well decorated, has a very zen feeling to it from the minute you walk in to the minute you leave. The change rooms are immaculate and feel as though you are in a high end spa in Scottsdale. The room that you do the yoga in is very clean and nice. The staff is friendly and very nice. They even sell Revo Juice and have samples of Chia Tea. Honestly, I can’t think of one negative thing to say besides «I» personally don’t like doing this type of yoga.

I went to this studio for the 1^st time and will not return.
I phoned 3 times with 10 minutes interval 45 mins before the 5pm at in class. There was no answer so I just showed up hoping that it us not booked up. She checked me in and I thought I was lucky. The room was packed beyond belief. I was inches away from my neighbors, the the room stinked because it was so crowded. The instructor was very nice but I wish she can give clearer instructions. I contemplated leaving but decided to stay the entire class, then can’t wait to get the hell out of that packed, sweaty room.
Parking is also tricky at this place.
On the pro side, the change room was immaculate.

This is a great hot yoga studio!
If you are a newbie to hot yoga, the heat can be very difficult to get used too. The studio temperature averages between 36.5−39 degrees Celsius, add in the humidity, not to mention the 40 or so warm bodies in class with you and you get a very, very hot room. Think of it like doing yoga in a sauna. Requiring extreme focus and tolerance, Moksha will bring your yoga practice to the next level. There are 60 and 90 min classes available which will seem like torture when you first start. You can feel light headed, difficult to breathe and even like you need to throw up. The instructors will advise you that this is normal as your body adjusts to the heat and also starts to get rid of the toxins in your body. I know this all sounds horrible, but trust me, your body will adjust and quickly and the benefit of how you feel after a hot yoga practice cannot be beat! You will feel energize, invigorative, refreshed and happy!
On Friday nights the studio offers a «Karma» class which is a first come, first serve class. (With a minimum donation of $ 5 with all proceeds going to charity.) It is usually taught by an instructor working towards their 200 hour certification. All the instructors are great, friendly, well-​educated and are awesome at making you feel comfortable in class and even at asking questions.
The studio is very clean. The change rooms are spacious and offer enough space for all patrons, even when the studio is at capacity.
It is a good idea to bring two towels; one to put on your yoga mat and one to wipe your sweat. (not counting the other towel you will need for your shower after!) I found that a fabric mat, which you can find at Lululemon, works better than a traditional yoga mat. Don’t forget to bring adequate amounts of water. As you will get very thirsty!
If you want to try something different, or up the level of your yoga practice this is definitely a great option. You will fall INLOVE with hot yoga!

I came to Moksha yoga last night for the first time at the suggestion of a workout buddy who goes here regularly.
We came to the Friday night Karma class which is a first come, first serve class every Friday at 9PM with a minimum donation of $ 5 with all proceeds going to charity. It is usually taught by an instructor working towards their 200 hour certification.
First of all, I’d really like to give huge props to all the Unilocalers who reviewed this previously — y’all were bang on in your descriptions and tips for a first time Moksha goer.
I will add that the first time you attend, you need to fill out a waiver. As mentioned by another reviewer, there is nowhere to lock up your items so it’s a good idea to leave your cell phone and/​or purse locked in your car and just bring in the essentials and your car keys.
The instructor last night was Kristen and she was fabulous, supportive, encouraging and all around awesome.
Moksha opens their doors 30 minutes prior to a class and be prepared to get in line if you want to make it into their Friday night class! I’m guessing they can hold somewhere around 50 people and we were definitely close to that last night.
Moksha has one hot studio, change rooms, showers, and a mat rental area in case you forgot yours or don’t have one.
I talked to some regulars before going in and found out that as you enter the studio, the far left as you walk in is typically the hottest spot and the far right as you walk in is typically the least hot but still HOT — I assure you :-) The website says the temperature averages between 36.5−39 degrees celsius and then add in near 100% humidity and you have a tropical jungle ;-)
I had a great time last night and woke up this morning feeling phenomenal! There is no pressure at Moksha and you are encouraged to go into corpse pose or shavasana anytime you need a break as well as child’s pose.
I brought in a yoga mat, a full size towel, 2 hand towels (including a micro fibre), and 2 water bottles. I would bring the same things again except I’d recommend the full size towel also be micro fibre as by the end it gets pretty slippery trying to hold poses and my micro fibre hand towel held up the best.
Unfortunately, someone from the previous class took my brand new sandals home with them and left me with the same pair — but worn out looking — and 2 sizes too small :-(I really hope they are a regular and realize this morning what happened and return my new shoes. The instructor was very apologetic and took down my name, phone number, and allowed me to post a sign at the shoe rack in the hopes that the person is a regular who will return my sandals.

There’s nothing more relaxing and energizing than a hot yoga session, especially in Edmonton’s crazy long winters.
Moksha has a welcoming atmosphere and a positive vibe. There’s a small business feel to the studio and all the yoga teachers and additional staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. Going to a yoga studio for the first time can be intimidating, and not all studios are as friendly and welcoming, but I felt right at home from the first time I walked into moksha.
I’m not an expert, but the hot yoga classes that they offer are diverse and accommodating for all levels. Whether you’re a beginning or an avid yogi, you’ll find a class that suits your needs. I can’t stress enough how friendly and knowledgable the instructors are either.
They have a change room with showers and you can rent mats and towels too if you need. Bring a change of clothes or even shower stuff because it gets really sweaty in the hot yoga room. It’s a great place and everyone should think about Moksha a try :)

I went to my first class last night, and it well exceeded my expectations! The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, making me feel comfortable immediately (I was quite intimidated since it was my very first hot yoga class!) As well, the video tour on their website, along with all of the information on what to bring and what to expect, was very helpful prior to my visit. I will definitely be back!

Out of the Hot Yoga studios I’ve been too, Moksha West is my favorite. I am coming from the perspective of a casual visitor. I am in no way a hard core yogi… Though I wish I was.
Prices are fair for the industry. I believe I paid about $ 220 (?) for 20 sessions. The exact pricing is available on their website, which is easy to navigate and very informative.
The studio is nice and modern, but has limited parking. Get there early if you drive! Doors are locked between classes, for obvious reasons, so those getting dropped off or taking public transit, don’t worry about being early.
The change rooms are your classic free for all, with a couple showers and toilets. There are no lockers and signs are posted to not leave valuables. (Common sense.)
The actual yoga room is beautiful & minimalistic. No unnecessary distractions. Large mirrors help you with your poses.
The instructors are all very pleasant and knowledgeable in their practice. While instructing they will gently correct your posture without drawing attention. Beginners have no fear of ever feeling foolish. It’s great for all levels.
Remember this is HOT yoga. You sweat more than anyone would imagine possible. Along with your mat, hot yoga towel (or beach towel), & water, make sure you bring a small towel to wipe the sweat off during the session. You’ll be glad you did!

Had a really great first-​hot-​yoga-​class-​ever with Jody and was very impressed. A beautiful, clean facility with friendly, competent staff. Loved it!

Love this place! They have probably the best flow in the city and the instructors are fantastic.

I may be biased because my first hot yoga experience was at this studio, and it kind of made me fall in love with hot yoga altogether! I also volunteered as an Energy Exchanger here for 6 months, so I got to know the staff in a more personal way, which definitely ups the star factor!
What I love about Moksha: I love Moksha because it’s tough but gentle. There is no pain while practicing, but there is CHALLENGE. Much like life (ok, it’s a review of YOGA, I am allowed to get yogic)! I enjoy the gentle nature of Moksha because I know that it is still a physical and demanding activity, but I don’t feel like a «musclehead» after final Shivasyna. What I disliked about the gym is what I like about Moksha, the atmosphere and environment. I rarely feel intimidated by my classmates/​instructors, but instead their verbal and visual cues help my alignment and knowledge of the postures.
What I love about the Moksha Edmonton studio: it’s small and it feels like a community. I like the amount of showers and the smell of Benefect in the air. I like the lighting in the hot room and the flooring used (once you visit Bikram near Whyte you’ll understand). I also like the reusable hand towels, the provided Dr. Bromner’s Peppermint Castille soap dispensers and the set up of the change room. Do I wish the studio was bigger? Yes. Do I wish that I didn’t have to wait in line? Yes. Moksha can’t help that they are so popular though!
I used to think I was tough, then I tried hot yoga!

I’ve done yoga at a few places… hot yoga to be precise… and this place is quite lovely. I enjoy the instructors, although I find they can push too hard at times… they are pleasant and good.
My biggest complaint… overbooking. I don’t understand why they constantly allow EVERYONE in… when there isn’t enough room??? It’s VERY annoying when you got there early and late-​comers arrive 1 – 2 min before class starts, forcing people to move over to accomodate them… forcing you to get too close to the people around you!
It’s not fair and its uncomfortable! you can’t do the moves righ b/​c you are constantly trying not to touch the sweaty person beside you… learn to do a head count Moksha and pay attention to the crowded room… learn to turn people away if its already FULL.

As a dancer and an avid workout enthusiast, I have tried several yoga studios around town, most of them hot yoga.
For me, Moksha strikes the perfect balance of comfort while maintaining your ability to be pushed.
When I first began hot yoga in general, I hated it. It’s a practice that requires extreme focus and tolerance and to be honest, the heat is difficult to get used too.
But as time went on and I explored different studios, hot yoga became my favourite workout experience and more specifically, Moksha as a studio, is my top recommendation.
Unlike other studios, Moksha runs at 60 minutes and not only pushes your body but really creates an atmosphere and a workout that allows your body to relax and be strictly in the moment.
Classes are usually packed, creating a true sense of teamwork but instructors remind you periodically throughout the class to work at your own pace and limits.
The environment creates an overall comforting atmosphere that allows you to really push yourself and without being self-​conscious or worrisome.
Often at other studios I would leave feeling frustrated and overheated, but with Moksha, I leave their studio up to three times a week feeling relaxed, calm, balanced and proud of pushing my own limits with the help of some great instructors.
It’s a pricey hobby but it’s worth the money.

Hot yoga is a workout like no other — your goal the first time you go is to stay in the room. I bust a sweat just lying there, and I also feel as though I get more out of each posture.
I prefer Moksha over Bikram, because in Moksha the standing postures are all in one series, then followed by the sitting postures — as opposed to the sit-​stand-​repeat of Bikram, which is trouble for anyone prone to orthostatic hypotension or with balance problems.
Be prepared for class — bring water, microfibre towels to lay on your mat and to wipe yourself down with.
One thing that really stands out to me about Moksha is the silence policy in the practice rooms — nothing like friends gossiping with each other to throw off my chakra. I find it to be a better meditation setting than other kinds of yoga for this reason, and perhaps the heat as well.

I got into Bikram yoga a couple years ago during a particularly cold winter. Unfortunately the studio moved, and then I moved, and their class schedules and my schedule never seemed to come together. I was very excited to learn that a Moksha yoga studio is so close to my current residence. I have been meaning to try it for a couple months now and I finally got down there today!
It was quite busy for their 7:30 pm class. There was a line up outside the door at 7 pm and plenty of people complaining about it and counting people to see if they would make it in, and gripping about new people. It kind of put me off a bit to be around so much negativity, but then the doors opened and in we all went into the more peaceful studio.
I paid for a beginners week which is 20 $ for unlimited yoga for one week. They gave me a scan card for my key ring and also a quick spiel about the rules and what to expect. It wasn’t long until myself and about 45 other people were in the hot studio about to begin.
An hour later and I was so done but so in heaven! I think this will become a regular thing for me and I am excited that I can go as many times as I like in this first week. The class was challenging but I found it easier than Bikram and I found the instructor very encouraging and more focused on breathing than nailing the poses.
There is on line check in for classes and many different price packages available. This is a great place to unwind while still getting a work out!

I have enjoyed ‘hot yoga’ since I was introduced to it in 2005 while I was living in Winnipeg. I began with Bikram in Winnipeg, then decided to venture out and try Moksha. The studio in Winnipeg is amazing (and would recommend anyone visiting to try it there) so I never returned to Bikram and turned into a Moksha girl!
After moving to Edmonton in June 2007, I looked for a Moksha studio, unfortunately there was not one. I went to Bikram a few times to full fill my hot yoga fix… but it was not the same. After searching once more in December of 2007, I found out that someone had opened a studio, I was excited to try it out! Again I have never turned back to any other type of hot yoga!
At Moksha you will walk into a warm, and inviting atmosphere. They have water bottles, yoga mats to buy or rent, health bars and water supplements, and yoga mini hand books (and probably more I can not remember). The change rooms have purified water at the taps (so you do not need to bring your own) and three showers. Unfortunately they do not have lockers so only bring the minimum/​and nothing too important. The doors are locked during classes, so coats and clothes should be safe. I have never been in the men’s change room, but I am sure it is just as darling.
In the hot room, it is a large bright rectangular room with full ceiling to floor windows on two walls, and mirrors the full Length of the room. The flooring is cork, the ceiling has heat panels, with dimmer lights. The room gets to between 36 – 39 degrees (I think it varies depending on the time of day and instructor’s…Ang is always the hottest). Wear the minimum you are comfortable wearing. Bring a full length towel, or yogitoes and a small hand towel.
They have a variety of classes, be sure to drink ALOT of water before going, and do not eat anything within 2 – 3 hours — personal experience haha! As well DO NOT wear make-up…it is always obvious when there are beginners in the class… not because of their form or endurance but because they have raccoon eyes!
Enjoy the sweat! It is absolutely amazing! If you try it out, do not judge it on your first time… if you don’t like it… stick with it you truly will fall in love with it after getting used to the heat and rhythm of Moksha.

This is my first Hot Yoga experience with this and any other studio in Edmonton. First the positive. The instructors are great and the classes are calm and easy to follow. I love the flow and I feel fantastic after a class. The negative of this studio is that I do not enjoy the beforehand of the classes. You are not allowed in the lobby until the previous class has ended. So that means if the previous class is 10 minutes late your left standing outside in the freezing cold. If you’re going to lock patrons out until the previous class is finished then finish on time. The whole rush thing beforehand is stressful. I’ve had women bud in front of me in line. Who knew yogi’s were like that? I find this studio a tad intimidating too. The regulars glare at you while waiting to get into the studio and like I said, the rushing is just not fun. Also, if you want people to shop the products you have for sale, let them in beforehand. I really have no desire to try on clothing after a class when I’m all sweaty. So, great classes but be on time with your classes so you don’t have to wait outside in the freezing cold.
