I remember the first machine I ever tried to repair was a simple too slice toaster. I have since repaired thousands of cars, and trucks of all verities and fuel sources. And I still remember that toaster mostly since it relay wasn’t broken until I tried to fix it. Wow was my mom ever mad for breaking the toaster. That toaster had a heating element, a spring and a switch. That was twenty five years ago now my toaster has an liquid crystal display, a defrost switch and a chime that goes off when it’s time to butter your toast. Vehicles have had a similar hyper investment in technology.

Like many of my generation my first car was a rusty old pick-​up truck. The most technologically advanced system was the signal lights. There was a switch and a temperature controlled circuit breaker that controlled the flashing of the lights. It was not very complicated by today’s standards.
