High Voltage Food & Coffee Bar

Some of the best donairs around. Service can be a bit abrupt during busy times, but I have noticed it getting friendlier. Many more options that the usual donair place. It is one to return to.

By far the best donair I’ve ever had! I always get the small/​regular chicken souvlaki and it is delicious. The meat and toppings are always fresh, the place is always spotless and the service is always great. We joke that the owner (not sure of his name) is the donair Nazi referring to the soup Nazi for those Seinfeld fans :) he is a straight shooter, no BS kind of guy and doesn’t take your order if your on your cellphone which I respect. Highly recommend!

I’ve come here a few times with my boyfriend because he loves the place. I finally gave in and ordered off their lacklustre menu.
First off, the man behind the counter never washed his bare fucking hands, which is revolting. He also made some stupid fuck comment about how women get confused when they get too many options. Because he asked which sauce I wanted, with no list of their options, I guess a third of their menu on the wall is gross sauces, then suggested two sauces that can work for it, and chastised me for asking for some of both. What?
The food is mediocre at best. They season the bread in some weird seasoning mixture that their panini press burns to shit.

Great place for donairs/​gyros as long as you don’t mind getting a little messy! They use super fresh and good quality ingredients here.

Really good donairs. Unlike most donair shops in their ingredients and presentation. No one else is like these folks. They are indeed unique and I highly recomend them to everyone!

It’s a favorite if I’m in the area, but they aren’t the best in town… in my humble opinion.

The old guy behind the counter refused to serve me coffee.
I thought a coffee bar would serve coffee, right?
Around 2pm on a Friday I waited in line for 10 mins.
I got up to the counter and ask for a coffee and he said that he can’t because he does not have the time, he’s too busy. WTF? It says coffee bar on the sign outside and I waited in line for a long time.

They say they have the best donairs yeah well, judging by the attitude the staff have about their customers I wonder what surprises they put in their sauces. ;p

My husband loves coming here to eat. I order the same exact thing every time: Jerk Donair. It’s savory and spicy. Customer service is pretty good too. It gets really busy around lunch, so we usually go after the lunch crowd has gone. Donairs seem to be pretty popular up here. Back where I’m from we call donairs GYROS.

Donair is awesome! Love that it’s toasted, just makes it that much better. Staff however are not at all friendly, esp the guy behind the counter not sure if he is the owner but he looks miserable and seems as if he hated his job.

The bison donair was really good for a lunch meal. The espresso is really bad, just don’t do it.

What the derrière is a donair? As a Californian girl, I am not well acquainted with the gloriously spiced meat wrap that is the donair, whose closest available relative I’ve encountered and eaten here is the gyro. On my first visit to Canada, my friend planned out the «top hits» of the most Edmonton/​Canadian things I could do/​eat, and donairs at High Voltage made it on the list.
I ordered a small Greek donair with wheat wrap from among a great variety of donairs and gyros, as I wanted my first experience to be the standard. The proportions of veggies and meat and cheese were just right for me, even as a petite girl with a voracious appetite. I have a penchant for crispy, crunchy breads and wraps, and High Voltage definitely nailed it with their crisply pressed and well dressed wraps.
The older man working the register (the owner perhaps) was in a jolly mood, catering to the lunch rush. Quick and efficient!
The parking is cramped and can be a bit confusing, but go before or after the rush and you should be a-​ok.
The next time I return to Canada, I will most definitely swing by to get my donair fixin’ fulfilled!

Service is slow, especially at lunch time but the Donairs are the best I’ve ever had. Worth the wait. The HERC is my personal favorite. Just plan on about 15 – 20 minutes to get your food if there is any kind of line.

High Voltage. Perhaps a Greek tribute to Zeus and his all mighty wielding powers of lightning rods and thunderbolts? All you really need to know is that you’re missing out if you haven’t tried High Voltage out yet. I’ve passed by this place so many times, it’s ridiculous that I haven’t been here before. I finally went with my friend who was visiting and checked them out on a late Monday afternoon.
There’s a few parking spots out front but most of the people were taking out their donairs/gyro’s to go. The place is quaint with a clean, aesthetically pleasing feel to it. Glass windows to car watch the time away.
All of the staff were super friendly and even wrapped up my friend’s leftover donair before we left.
We ordered:
— Greek gyro ($ 9.50 regular) — traditional, Greek style gyro. Marinated pork, feta, tomatoes, onions and a garlicky tzatziki sauce. I got mine traditional style (old school, I know). What I really like about High Voltage is that they grill them and have a sexy (yes sexy) mix of Greek spices on the outside. So addictive.
— Donair ($ 9.25 regular) — my friend can’t make a decision to save her life. Luckily, the lady working the front was insanely patiently and helped coax my friend into making a choice. But not really. Apparently you can mix different/​multiple sauces (all about customization) so my friend went with a sweet and jerk sauce (Caribbean hot) combo.
There’s about 8 different donairs to choose from (greek, east coast, wild west, vindaloo, blue cheese, hangover, 2 alarm and jerk). Comparing the two, the gyro easily had more meat in it. Guessing, it must have been about 1.50 times more meat! Both pitas were delicious and the meat was tender, juicy goodness.
So, to sum up, are you craving gyros or donairs but don’t want the typical, greasy ones? Then hit up High Voltage. Crispy grilled pitas with a little bit of Greek magic equals satisfied bellies. Can’t wait to go back again!

Okay, so the owner is not an extrovert, a people-​pleaser, or a customer service fanatic; this is one restaurant where the customer is not always right!
After working retail and witnessing the ridiculous shenagins people will engage in for the sake of free food, a discount, or a complimentary gift card, I appreciate this atmosphere!
The food is always delicious, and high quality, the donair meat may be a little dry, but it’s never greasy, and while it may seem a little pricy, the price is more than appropriate for the large portion sizes. Vegetables are always fresh, and they use real romaine lettuce! No iceberg lettuce with zero nutritional value.
As an extra bonus, specialty soda connoissuers rejoice, they always have a large selection of quality bottled drinks, both local and imported. I recommend the lemon soda. Some might complain there are no cheap fountain drinks, but I would rather enthusiastically rave — there are no cheap fountain drinks! You will not be able to buy a watery soda lacking carbonation here.

Best donairs in the city by far. It almost feels like a «gourmet donair» with the way they are put together (essentially with a delicious spice on top and grilled on a press for a few minutes).
Service is usually quick but you might want to avoid it right at lunch time as the lineup can get a little long.

This place is one of my top go-​to take out restaurants in the city. I generally get the gyro, so I can’t really comment on how their donairs are. Although I know that the owner doesn’t really appreciate his establishment being called a «donair» restaurant; a man in line in front of me tried to compliment the place one time and he took issue with that description.
But the gyros are great. It’s similar in a way to a donair, but the meat doesn’t come off a skewer that rotates and it seems to be of higher quality. There is also a greater variety of vegetables and sauces that accompany a gryo, versus a donair. Everything is placed inside of a wrap, then pressed for a minute or two before being served. So regardless as to what the differences are, the end result is an incredibly tasty wrap.
There isn’t really anything else in the city to my knowledge that compares to High Voltage. It’s a great little place. However I will say that the owner can be a bit sour-​faced at times and doesn’t seem to enjoy the people part of running a business. But that’s a small price to pay for a delicious product. Also, the hours are a bit weird, likely because it seems to be almost a one-​man operation. It’s a little annoying that I can’t drop by on a Saturday for dinner, but that’s ok. All in all, it’s a one of kind restaurant in the city and a great place to grab something to go or to sit down quickly in.

First place I come when I get into town. If you don’t know about this place your missing out! Been coming here over 10 years! Nowhere else comes close !

I love high voltage. The food is consistently incredible, and the service is quick and efficient. The only complaint I might have is that the ventilation isn’t great, so you wanna either do take out or eat there if you aren’t going anywhere after.

I love this place and the donairs! Previous reviews had complained about the service and I have no idea what they are talking about, he might not be a smiley outgoing fella but he makes a wicked donair and the service is pretty quick, I’m there to eat not to socialize. Best donairs I have ever had. I highly recommend this place to everyone who has a craving for a donair. they have a lot of other Greek food that looks amazing aswell but I stick with my usual.

I finally managed to try the doner kebab here. The restaurant location is very strange, if you miss the exit you need to drive an extra 5 minutes to locate it again: D
As soon as I entered I was disappointed by the meat paste doner. I am not a big fan of doner in the paste form and I prefer the real deal (Thin slices of meat stacked on top of each other). However, I decided to give it a shot. I asked for the large size east coast sauce with all the condiments (extra jalapeño). The sandwich arrived in less than 5 minutes and it only costs 7 $.
In contrast with my first impression, I really enjoyed the sandwich. They add zaatar on the bread and then grill it in a panini grill which makes the bread crispy on the outside and moist inside. I really enjoyed the taste of sauce and also the grilling trick.
I think they have managed to distinguish them self from all other doner places in Edmonton by the delicious sauce and the grilling technique. I am sure if they switch to real meat, their business will be much more succesfull (and probably a five star sandwich shop).
If you are in the neighberhood and are looking for a cheap quick fix for your lunch, I highly recommend this restuarants.

Great donair! Toasting the pita with the Greek spice is a unique spin. Only complaint was no cucumber for the chicken souvlaki but that’s a pretty minor quibble.
Closes at 7pm and location is somewhat awkward. Would clean up if was near Whyte or Jasper.
Will be back to sample the Gyros and maybe bring a vegetarian friend along to sample the very well regarded falafel.
