Earth’s General Store

This seems to be more of a gardening and ‘grow your own’ centre than a grocery store. That being said, I am not their target market.
However, I appreciated their selection of eco-​friendly menstrual products but was surprised a moon or luna cup was not included.
I bought a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread, which is quite nice. While pricy, $ 7 for the loaf, the ingredients are squeaky clean and the loaf weighs like 1 kg!

It’s been 5 years since my last review of Earth’s General so I thought I’d give an update.
Stuff I love:
Earth’s General provides a lot of niche items that are difficult to come by at other Organic/​local shops. For example, they are the only place in the city that I know of that carries cloth menstrual pads. They carry a lot of books, gardening items, and bulk items. I also love that staff at Earth’s General strive to be as eco-​friendly as possible, encouraging customers to bring their own re-​usable bags not just for carrying out the groceries but for bulk items as well. They routinely provide food items for free if they can’t be sold any more (instead of just throwing them out). The prices at Earth’s General are on-​par with other organic shops nearby and often the produce here is less expensive than comparable products sold by competitors.
Stuff I dislike:
The only real downside to shopping here is the same downside I find at most of the organic shops in the area. Though I absolutely love a lot of the products here, I am a bit put off by some of the store’s ideologies. Primarily, trends like «anti-​GMO» or the promotion of «natural» products as being superior to synthetic products regardless of chemical composition or product function. I personally don’t think the issue is so clear-​cut. This problem is not unique to Earth’s General so this doesn’t really affect my choice between it and other local/​organic shops. I just wish I could be more selective of what ideologies I’m supporting when I’m buying niche products.

This is out of our way but once in a while we make the drive to stock up on organic spices, lentil hummus and whatever else we find. We love the atmosphere and we’ve always had great customer service on the phone and in person. Great little place.

I visited this store, as well as their other location on 101 and 104^th street. I have to say, I prefer this location since it’s bigger.
There sure are some strange products, so I like touring the entire store checking things out. I loooove the dates from there. I have never tasted such juicy, sweet, dates in my entire life. (Random, but still!). I also like buying baking powder, apple cider vinegar, oatmeal, as well as other random things from here.
I do have to say, their bathroom smells really weird. I think its cleaned with ACV because that’s exactly what it smells like. Anyway, their employees are nice, the store is clean, and has awesome things/​food to try. The only downside I can think of is the price, but I think its worth it so I will definitely continue shopping here!

I have only been here a couple of times but I already can’t wait to go back! I love browsing the shelves and checking out all the interesting items. I wanted a composter from them but they were all out the first time I went in. They put my name down to give me a call when one came in and they called me for it a few weeks later. It would have cost a fortune to buy the same composter online due to shipping so it all worked out great! The staff who work here are incredibly friendly and the store is open late. Love it!

This store is so darn cute! Decent selection and the staff is beyond helpful! Not as busy as Blush Lane, when I visited but I’m sure they do amazing throughout the week. The hours are great and they have workshops for fermentation etc. The prices are fair as well. Definitely a place to check out. :)

I would truly give it a 3 star I can get a lot of the items at the local supermarket. The staff were great and the produce and fruit were really nice. The 4 th star is for the smell. It smells heavenly in the store !! It’s quite small ! But great selection for the size

I love this store and what it stands for. I love that it’s independently owned and eco conscious and focused on sustainable and ethical products. They also have a large selection of books and non grocery items that are hard to find in other organic stores around the city. It’s definitely a gem.

Great place for Organic produce. It’s very simple and has a great selection of produce, nuts, cereals, cloth diapers, you name it they have it.

Im so glad that I can improve my rating here. Looks like things have definetly improved or Im just not an ass anymore but the nicest asshole you’ll meet LOL. I was able to walk through the store in a nonpressure looking around sort of way, dosent it just errrk you when you go to a store and every associate has to ask do you need any help to the point they chase you out of the store? EEErkks me. Would like to see more choices for animals but overall a better experience.

I love coming here, even if it’s just to get a whiff of what my home and life would smell like if I completely cut out my smoking habit and banished all boxes of Kraft Dinner from the pantry. Having said that, what I think I enjoy most is the total absence of a judgmental vibe at Earth’s General Store – one I’ve picked up from so many health food shops and groceries in the past. People are just doing their own thing here.
While necessarily pricey given their business, I actually find great deals on things like tortilla chips, (real) soap, and aromatic oils. Even the veggies are pretty reasonably priced. I also come here for some of the stranger items on my shopping list, like washing soda and worms (for vermiposting), and on my most recent trip, I had a very nice discussion with the older male cashier about reusable feminine hygiene products. Weird? Yes. Awesome? Yes.

Quality, natural/​organic/​local/​renewable products… no argument. The staff is friendly and helpful. The only problem I have with this place is the owner, and maybe that’s a bit petty. The interactions I’ve had with him have left me feeling «judged in adequate» and have been quite negative. So while I have no problems with the products or the staff, if possible, I try to support businesses owned by people who know how to treat their customers.

It’s a hippie store and it’s proud of it. While still fairly pricey, the products are of high value — the store caters to those who want earthy, earth-​friendly, high quality, and generally organic products without all of the conspicuous consumption complications of Planet Organic. You don’t feel as if you’re getting ripped off here.
The store features lots of vegetarian food, eco-​friendly products, and a somewhat spaced-​out, but well intentioned staff. It’s great to have in the neighbourhood, but I’m still not keen on that façade.

Earth General Store is not just a local organic store it is a community and educational center. I look to the staff and owner for mentorship on how to shop and live. The owner is heavily invested he in supporting Edmonton. He donates to environmental charities and supports worthy groups like the bicycle commuters. He has won an Emerald Award. When I Shop at Earth’s I am getting good food and supporting well researched and intelligent boosterism of Edmonton because the owner will do the right thing with any ‘profit’. I am supporting good citizenship because the staff and the owner model good citizenship. For example: bikes parked in the parking lot.
He has bulk hot cocoa and other bulk items hard to find. He has great vegan and veggie stuff. His store combined with the farmers market is all one needs.
He even donates to charity if you bring your own containers or bus bike or hike to his store instead of using the car! I vow to work on that.

If there’s anyone who tells you not to check this place out, they’d have to be checked into a mental clinic!
You don’t have to be a locavore.
You don’t have to be a crazy, organic geek.
You don’t have to believe in the green revolution.
You don’t have to believe in global warming.
You’d still be able to visit this place and even without buying anything, be charmed by its simplicity. Of course, if you are any or all of the above, you’d probably have an orgasmic experience.
Quaint, petite and other such adjectives can describe the size and nature of this store that’s located a stone’s throwaway from the Milcreek ravine. Inside, there’s perhaps an aisle and a half of fresh groceries — nothing tremendous to speak of — but invariably (always?) local. Maybe two or three aisles of home necessities from soaps smelling of herb like substances you’d normally find in a tropical forest in India, to cloth diapers and pads for those who believe that the world was far better 60 years ago. A few free-​trade organic coffee bean containers to talk of, as well as a variety of loose and packaged teas. A couple dozen of bulk cans of grains and legumes from long grain white rice to unheard of high-​altitutde Andean grains (not talking about Quinoa here!). Half a dozen of cereals and maybe 4 refrigerators of cold/​frozen food ranging from dairy to tofukry burgers.
You enter the store and pick up a basket or a bag. It’s not any basket. It’s a cane basket, like as if you were picking up fruits from a tree and cloth bags that are re-​usable for in-​store shopping. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and always happy. Also, they have free donation jars in which you put plastic coins of different colors that are valued from 5¢ to 20 ¢ for various reasons from getting your own reusable bag, to biking to the store. Yes, the store donates money if you bike, recycle laundry jars, get your own bag etc. etc.
It’s certainly a concept store and I try to shop here as and when I can. Even if you’re not into the whole organic thing, do stop by and be enamored by it. They have a lot of books on gardening, healthy living etc. near the exit. Actually they have two full bookshelves of books! Come here and have a nice time

What a great store and the staff are so nice, I must have been asked by three different people if I had any questions or needed any help. And I liked their system of rewarding you for bringing your own bags… you get a chit for each bag and you drop the chit into a box for one of three different charities that they support. You even get a chit for taking public transit or riding your bike to the store. They have a fresh produce section containing a good selection of a little bit of everything. And I like that you can bring your own container and refill a large selection of items including laundry detergent, shampoo, soy sauce and maple syrup. I found most of their prices to be comparable to Planet Organic, but I also found a number of items that had a better price than anywhere else in this city. You absolutely have to check out Earth’s new space. It’s about three times the size of the old store, and now includes several aisles of dry foods and refrigerated/​frozen goods — all vegetarian, of course. It is much easier to browse around, and there is still all of the staple items Earth’s shoppers expect to find, like haircare products, reusable bags and drink containers, books, magazines, and my favourite — activist buttons. I bought a «Make Love, Not War» button there this afternoon — classic!

This place is a little on the small side, and you might run into it completely by accident. Their big sign is really the biggest indicator that they’re even there!
Having come from San Francisco, this is definitely one of my favorite places. They have eco-​friendly and fair trade products from A to Z, they cover almost everything (I just wish they had groceries!). They have, by far, the best eco-​friendly/​organic/​natural hair care and body products (from deodorants to massage oils to shampoos and conditioners) in the city!
It’s not particularly dirt cheap, but in reality these are just the real prices we should be paying for things. Who seriously thinks we should be paying $ 1 for shampoo? If it doesn’t show up on our price tag, the cost is still being paid somewhere else. And although definitely not cheap, I have found that a lot of the items ARE cheaper than elsewhere in the city — which makes it cheap enough for me! I’ve seen a difference of between $ 3 and $ 10 cheaper here than for the identical products at Superstore or Planet Organic. I LOVE the biodegradable trash bags they sell that are wonderfully light on the packaging side, and the library for Vegetarians of Alberta is awesome! Has definitely become a regularly visited store for me.

Earth’s General store is another store among the new wave of environmentally friendly shops appearing in the city.
Among the items they offer are notebooks, food, cleaning products, baby items, water bottles, clothing, books and more. The store is located on the 2^nd floor of a building on Whyte Ave. A very old building. The staff is really helpful and can answer any questions you have.
If you live in the area and live this lifestyle this is a great spot for you.

I love Earth’s General Store. Whenever I visit, there are so many things I want to buy. They have everything that is earth-​friendly: menstrual products, notebooks, tights, baby things, food, cleaning products, metal water bottles, and tons more. There’s also a large variety of magazines. I always pick up my feminist magazines here.
This store is located upstairs in an old building. When you walk around the store the floor creaks, which I love.
The downside is that everything in this store is expensive. But Earth’s is a 100% independently owned store, and everything they sell is earth-​friendly, and that’s why I like to call it the «feel-​good» store, because you can feel good about spending your money here!
