Army & Navy

Like other reviewers have said, the «awe» that we experienced here as kids has worn off a bit. BUT… it’s still an amazing place to get good quality items for low low prices.
We went looking for suspenders to complete a Lumberjack costume, and were not disappointed. I was actually surprised to see the variety offered. Thick straps, thin straps, black, red, blue, brown… I didn’t know suspenders were even still being made, let alone in every colour of the rainbow!
So, that part was easy. But we had an hour of free parking to use (see pro tip below), which seemed like a waste if we left right away. So, we trotted downstairs to take a look. It’s a little bit like taking a step back in time.
Need cookie sheets? Luggage? Bedding? Food for your pantry? Art for your wall? You’ll find it here and for a great price.
I hadn’t been here in a long time, but my love of the store is rejuvinated and I hope to be back soon!
PRO TIP: Parking is obviously atrocious. But the impark lot right behind Army & Navy has spots for 1 hour free parking for A&N customers.

I kind of feel like this Army & Navy store isn’t as awesome as I remember it being, but perhaps that’s because my tastes have changed. As a youth I found awesome items in a different Army & Navy location and I keep hoping to find the same amounts of awesome here whenever I visit. That said there is a good amount of finds to be found here, but it really depends on what you’re looking for at the time of your visit. Perhaps I just wasn’t in the mood to shop for their wares when I visited most recently? Regardless the store is clean, reasonably well kept and the staff members seemed to be busy at work when I visited.

Occasionally, I can find a killer deal at A & N. Good stock comes and goes. It’s not consistent.
Best deals this week:
«Turo by Vince Camuto» leggings. They normally retail for $ 50.00. I got ‘em for $ 20.00.
«Ellen Tracy» skirt for $ 20.00 (Reg. $ 50.00)
Canned dolmades for $ 2.50 (which is about half price).
Jar spices galore, $ 1.00.
King size sheet sets, $ 39.00.
I’d pass on the shoes for myself, but I did buy my 91 year old Aunt a pair of «Crocs» knock offs for $ 9.00.
I think the men’s department is a little better than the ladies wear. Most of the girl’s non-​brand clothing and underwear is very cheaply made. The dressing rooms are covered in dust bunnies.
The staff is not all that helpful. They are mostly busy stocking shelves.
Good selection of kitchen stuff, pillows and floor mats.
Not great selection of health and beauty stuff.
They validate parking in the back.
The store hours are better than last year. Now open until 8:00pm.

I’ve been a fan since I was a toddler hiding in the clothes on the round racks while my mom frantically searched for me. One time she left me hiding to teach me a lesson and to this day I remember hollering my way after her. All the staff knew me by that time, hahaha. I still go once in a while and can find deals that tickle me to pieces. I have a pair of comfy sweats that I purchased at least 7 years ago and they keep looking good! I’ve been photographed in them and been surprised by how good. That’s what I always liked about A&N Boutique as we all called it in ‘our day’. Good quality, good prices. I miss the downtown store as I used to love going there as well. But Whyte Ave is my childhood favorite and I’m thrilled they are still there. I have a comforter from 1997 that I purchased there. Same thing, good quality, great deal. No kidding.

Army & Navy is such a throwback to «the old days». It seems like the kind of store that has had its time come and go but it is still alive and kicking somehow. And I am glad it is. I don’t go there a lot but I always enjoy browsing the store when I do. Their stock is always changing and you will always find great deals on everyday products.
They carry work clothes so if you are in need of boots, vest, coveralls, etc. Upstairs they have mostly clothes and shoes. Downstairs is where the gold can be found: food, linens, camping stuff, art, rugs, home supplies, etc.
Its a discount store with a discount look and feel to it. Right in the heart of Old Strathcona which somehow I think fits its style very well.
Parking is limited but meters are free after 6pm! But if you are in the area shopping already it is worth a pop in to see what you can find!
Fun Fact: This location was the 3^rd location of Army & Navy to open — and it opened in 1928!

While I don’t always buy something when I visit the Army&Navy I still find myself stopping in every time I am down on Whyte just to browse their eclectic selection of clothing, housewares, camping gear, shoes, and food. It’s a discount store so the prices are definitely right but the quality of the goods being sold is sometimes a little questionable. With that being said though I have occasionally found brand name things like Tommy Hilfiger mixed in with the more generic stuff that I assume must have been acquired by Army&Navy after it went out of style or out of season.
There has occasionally been a security guard standing at the front door when I have visited which makes me think they have an issue with theft but I still find the overall atmosphere of the store to be pretty nice. I was impressed the last time I was in during a cold snap looking for gloves and toques for my boyfriend and I that one one of the staff members took the time to go through every rack to find his size for him (he has big hands). I admittedly had never really had high expectations in terms of service here but she totally went above and beyond the call of duty to earn the sale.
If your a student looking to save some money or just someone who doesn’t want to pay high prices on essential items like socks or dishes this is a great place to stop in and treasure hunt!

This is the best store for cheap funky finds. They have an amazing collection of women’s shoes and an epic shoe sale each winter. The quality of the items is not the best but for the price who cares if you only wear your hot pink pumps a few times

I haven’t been to Army & Navy for years and after today’s visit I know why — the stuff there is so inexpensive, which makes it very tempting to buy things I don’t need. A 16 piece set of dishes for $ 9.99, why not? Except I don’t need anymore dishes, so maybe I’ll put those back… for now.
I can’t speak to the clothing because they don’t many things in my size. But if you’re looking for a good deal on housewares, camping equipment, and other things and you know this is a discount store — and not the highest of quality then Army & Navy might be worth a stop. Come on a Wednesday evening after 6pm and the store won’t be that busy, plus metered parking is free after 6.

I love Army and Navy! You can always find such random items. I have bought many clothes at this location. I am cheap when it comes to clothes because I wear a lab jacket all day at work so I do not get to wear nice clothes outside of work often.
I Recently noticed last time I visted here that the bathing suit collection was fabulous.
Only downfall that brings it to a four star is that the parking kind of sucks.

They have a great variety, all kinds of clothes for everyone, shoes, household items, and a little mini grocery store in the basement. They have great prices, and the staff are always walking around, there not hard to spot with their red shirts. =-)

As Brittany K says, Army & Navy is a discount store and you’ve got to take it for what it is. It’s a great location for students and other poor people (like me) to come and get something cheap and handy that works for six months: D
I like that it has a decent collection of things, almost like a Walmart store, but a lot smaller. Don’t expect to find something that’s of high quality. I would shop here for things like socks, cheap coffee mugs and utensils and kitchen stuff and such… perhaps even the odd gloves.
When I first came to Edmonton, I lived pretty close to this store and found it useful to get cheap winter jackets (I moved in fall) and stuff. Didn’t want to plunge straight into the expensive jacket scene without making sure what I needed and it was useful.
The picnic stuff is good, if you have a last minute plan to go to a lake or something and have never owned a cooler or a camp chair (again, like me: D)!

Take Army & Navy for what it is, and you’ll be happy.
This store prides itself on being Canada’s discount department store, which I think is a very fitting description.
The clothes are inexpensive, and though they’re not necessarily cheaply made, they’re usually from inexpensive fabrics (such as cotton). They’re also not usually on trend, but they’re not horribly far off. For example, you’re unlikely to find a floaty pleated skirt, silk shirt or lacy top (which seem to be trendy at the moment), but you might find a cute tee or basic skirt and a cheap bikini for Albert Beach.
Great location and a fairly large store.

Army & Navy has it all.
Not only does visiting A&N leave me with a warm nostalgic feeling, it also makes me feel good inside about great deals. A&N puts its larger big box store competitors to shame.
Unfortunately, I have not seen the tuxedoed (can that be a verb?) gentleman who played punk rock songs outside the A&N as of late. I miss his stomping, three chord strumming, and non-​melodic singing style. Perhaps he has moved to the big time and is playing outside a Macy’s in NYC.

It’s fun to go to Army & Navy! Mind you, you’re not going to walk out with designer duds, but it’s a great place to get seasonal clothes and shoes. Oh ya, the shoes… once, sometimes twice a year they have an amazing shoe sale. I’m not talking PVC crap shoes, but actual leather and name brand shoes. This usually takes place in the spring and fall.
My husband likes to get his work wear here. They provide decent prices on Carhartt brand work clothes and lumberjack jackets (a must for any true Canadian).
Their home deco section is good for those one a budget. I bought my first set of curtain from my house here. They lasted longer than I thought. They also sell hardward and garden stuff. If it’s stuff you want, stuff they got.
The Whyte Ave Army & Navy brings back nostalgic feelings from my childhood and I enjoy going here if for no other reason.

I went into Army & Navy on a whim this weekend and I discovered some new and wonderful things!
Have you ever thought of Army & Navy for home décor? I know that I haven’t. But I’m going to now. We went in here just to look around and kill some time but ended up finding a bunch of great stuff!
On the lower level, they have some great household and home décor items. We have been debating on buying curtains from a few different places but we are definitely going to buy them from Army & Navy now. We found really nice curtains for $ 15! And they have a bunch of different colors in great fabrics. I couldn’t believe it!
We also found some surprisingly beautiful art. When I used to think of Army & Navy, I never thought of art but they have some really nice pieces. They also have some great picture frames. They even have a bunch of throw pillows. They have area rugs, decorative clocks and mirrors. They have ottomans and bedding. They have so much that I never knew was there!
They have great prices and they have a lot of things to choose from. I also bought a little black dress, a belt, and some Jones soda (the Jones sodas are only $ 1 each).
I will be going back to Army & Navy in the very near future.

Army and Navy is like a dollar store on steroids. Everything here is cheap cheap cheap. Or I guess, Inexpensive, Inexpensive, Inexpensive!
Some of the stuff here IS cheap in quality, but they also have some brand name stuff too.
The entire top floor of Army & Navy is dedicated to clothing, shoes and accessories for men and women and downstairs is filled with housewares, beauty products, camping stuff, school supplies and textiles. You really can find some great stuff here, and I have on more than one account.
You can spend a lot of time in this mega store. You can really save money on items here too. I found febreeze air freshener here for $ 3.00. It usually costs $ 5 at a regular department or grocery store.
If anything, buy your camping equipment here. It is the same brands as Canadian Tire or Walmart but for a fraction of the cost. Why wouldn’t you visit Army & Navy?

This is one place I always pop into while I’m around Whyte Ave. I’m not too sure why, they don’t always have great things, but I guess it’s because of the history of the store. This place has been around for a pretty long time. Right now they have a lot of Canadian clothing (items with the maple leaf on them) because of the Olympics. If you want to represent Canada then maybe you could find something you like, a sweater, a hat, or a pair of sweatpants. They have some okay looking tops but nothing that really jumped out at me and made me feel like it was a must have. They have some sexy underwear right now since Valentine’s Day is coming up but I seem to be of a bigger bust then the bars that they carry.
I do say the one thing I really like about Army and Navy is their shoe section. They have some nice shoes and boots on for a pretty decent price. Now that spring is coming our way soon they have some nice and sexy looking high-​heals. They also have come cute looking flats in some interesting colors (like orange).
They also have a whole downstairs area if you need camping gear or something for the home (like blankets). They also have a men’s wear section but I really didn’t look too much into it so I really don’t know what they have.
I guess I would say that this place is a good place to pop into, walk around and see if they have anything that catches your eye.

I heard people talk for years about how cool the Army & Navy was before I ever ventured inside one. It just sounded so utilitarian and khaki. I finally let go of my preconceived notions and went inside. It reminds me of a cross between a Winners and an Army Surplus. They’re just white walls, cement floors and racks upon racks of deals, both fashionable and camo.
I found two pairs of pumps last summer that were astronomical deals. If you love going to Winners for shoes, add Army & Navy to your list. They will forever be in my shoe good books. If you need plain tees or cheaper hoodies or trendy but inexpensive pants, check these racks. Seriously, not every kid can afford to shop at stores like Under the Belt, Oasis or FS Girls. Now I understand why so many university students shop at the A&N and Value Village. I stopped shopping altogether when I was in U (a very painful part of my past) but now I realize you don’t have to compromise on creative fashion if you’re on a budget.

Army & Navy is one of those so lame it’s cool stores. It’s definitely not fancy or anything, but it’s one of those places where you can find many treasures in the sea of mediocre.
My earliest memories of this place, when it was located downtown, was when my mom would drag me along to buy her work uniforms. Since then, neither the store nor the merchandise it carries has really changed, but the quality of items they carry has improved and become more modern; not to mention, I don’t think they carry work uniforms anymore.
The clothing is actually quite fashionable, but I find that the sizes run on the small side, so that’s always frustrating and disappointing. The prices are pretty cheap, but I’ve noticed it’s been getting more expensive over the years.
Sometimes this place gets in some really unique items, like the leopard-​print plush chairs shaped like high-​heeled shoes.
The basement of the store is my favourite place. There’s food, dishes, movies, bedding, toiletries – all kinds of things. I was really happy when I found a particular candy here that I haven’t been able to find anywhere else in the city!

I have childhood memories of heading to Army and Navy with my family to pick up excellent clothing at low prices. Today, I still head there for the same reason. It’s not an upscale place, and it certainly has not changed much with the times, but I can still find exactly what I am looking for without spending a bundle. I can sometimes find items that I have difficulty locating elsewhere. Stock changes regularly, and seasonal items are plentiful.
In addition to clothing, Army and Navy sells household items, food, and various knick knacks. Just about everything is lower in price than in department stores or speciality shops.
Army and Navy really holds its own on trendy Whyte Avenue — it’s a landmark and a very unique and historical stop amidst the coffee shops and chain stores.
