Historique
Fondé en 1993.
Growing Together began in a child care center in 1993 in response to a local community need. In the Cowichan valley in 1991 and 1992 there were 41 and 42 births respectively to teen-aged mothers between the ages of 12 and 19 years: these young parents in most cases were not able to continue on with their basic education, as few spaces offering high quality infant care for under 3 years were available in the vicinity of schools which the parents might attend.
The provincial government provided initial grants to applying School District Boards to construct child care spaces on school premises and through this funding, a portable building was erected on the grounds of the Cowichan Valley Open Learning Co-Op, with the assistance of many funders and personal donations.
Growing Together is a non profit society separate from the School District, it is operated on-site and in association with S.D.79.
