Established in 1952.

J&R Kosher Meat and Delicatessen, founded in 1952, by Robert Nemes on Van Horne Avenue in Outremont, Quebec, provides high quality, great value and dedicated service, one customer at a time. Shortly after immigrating to Canada from Romania, Robert, a Holocaust survivor vowed that nobody in his family would ever go hungry again. After working in a meat packing house Robert gathered his savings and decided to start his own business. As the company grew in popularity, Robert asked his son Sidney to join the business.

After its humble beginnings, J & R’s reputation became synonymous with high quality and personalized service. J & R quickly became a familiar household name and telephone number essential when ordering quality meats. Always a step ahead of the competition, Sidney continuously brought in new ideas. His love for the Deli business, cooking, grilling, and caring for his customers was very instrumental in building the reputation of their current location in the Cavendish Mall.

Sid has been in the business for over 40 years and worked with his father, Robert (who founded the business in 1952) since he was a teenager.

Sid’s passion for deli and cooked foods has led to the creation of many fan favorites, including Kosher bacon, beer-​infused sausages, pulled beef and the seasonal hit — smoked meat potato latkes!
