History
Established in 1932.
The caves, caverns and crevasses at Scenic Caves Nature Adventures began forming over 450 million years ago. The area has an extensive native history. Before 1616, as many as 8000 native people lived in nine villages along the Niagara Escarpment. By 1616, Samuel de Champlain is known to have visited the Petun tribe who lived in the village of Ekarenniondi. The Iroquois overran the tribes and by 1650, the Petun and Huron abandoned their villages. In the mid– 1800’s, settlers begin to carve farms in the region. By 1930, the property was settled and operated as a farm. In 1932, Alfred Staples purchased the acreage and began promoting it as a tourist attraction with guided tours. Members of the Staples family continued to operate it. In 1993, businessman Rob Thorburn bought the property and ‘breathed new life’ into this significant tourist attraction by adding light adventure activities such as treetop walking, ziplining, winter activities and more.
