I have dined here several times with my wife and with friends at various times and days of the week. Service is always prompt and pleasant. The English style fish and chips are the best I have found in a 100 km radius of Ottawa. Very nice batter, cooked perfectly, nice chips that are moist without being greasy, home made cole slaw and home made tartar sauce. Ask for a small side of their gravy for your chips, you won’t regret it! I have also had their Guiness and steak pie, very rich while being delicate with a nice pastry topping. Their shepherd pie is amazing. Peek in to the kitchen and you see saucier pans! Almost everything on the menu is made from scratch and is consistently good. It is a small pub but is laid out in a way that creates an intimate and warm atmosphere. This pub is perfect and with the friendly service, warm atmosphere, fantastic food it is worth the trip to Carleton Place.

Food, service, décor all fantastic! Just had my birthday party there and all my guests were satisfied. You can’t beat the small town atmosphere when you visit The Gate.

Great for a Lanark county pub/eatery. There are many in the area but the food can often be quite scary. I always get the veggie curry dish and it is never disappointing. The portion is large. And the naan is fantastic. I always get my curry medium as I love heat, but not when It compromises flavour. It is a very small space, but the service is friendly and the meals arrived to your table in a timely fashion. Great spot for Carleton place.

Came here on Saturday night for dinner and a drink with friends. The atmosphere was great. The place is a bit small so we called ahead to make sure we’d have a place to sit. My husband ordered the Butter Chicken. We love Indian food, and were surprised with the good quality. The naan that came with it was also nice. My husband asked for it to be medium in spice and it seemed to be as mild as possible. I ordered the coconut haddock. I had expected it to be like the regular fish and chips, but it seemed to be a frozen filet and the breading wasn’t as «fluffy or flaky» as regular fish and chips. i was expecting to get fries, cause I don’t read menus properly, haha. What I got was rice and garden vegetables. It was actually quite good and I was happy to not have the fries. Overall we were really impressed with the food as we were expecting more traditional pub grub.

Out of all the places around this is a best place to have lunch, I have been to 4 in 50m radius. I would recommend to anyone who’s visiting the town. If you’re in a hurry they can get your lunch ready in 10 minutes, happened with me when I was late to the airport. Service is very good, food is great and prices are reasonable. Try their Firecracker burger or BBQ chicken salad, I really liked it.

The Welsh rarebit needs to be authentic — it was melted cheese, not rarebit — but it was good, and it came with a spot of salad in the middle of the plate with a dressing that was drizzled elsewhere on the plate, and the dressing was the house dressing, which is FANTASTIC. One of those ‘sorry, not allowed to tell you a thing about what’s in it’ proprietary things — bottling it would be a good idea. Fried zucchini on the blander side, but also on the crisper side, long generous portions. It tasted healthy for fried zucchini. My salad(«Galway») was as described(pretty plain), needed more tomatoes and cucumber; nice and fresh and perhaps a bit pricy for a plain salad. Dining companion #1 had the Irish salmon and a burger and was quite pleased with both. Dining companion #2 had a grilled cheese kiddie meal; the grilled cheese was quite tasty as kiddie grilled cheeses go, and we all thought well of the St James Gate fries. Later we realised we weren’t offered/brought the dessert component of the kiddie meal, but service was otherwise pretty flawless and pleasant. The menu needs more OMGWOW like the dressing, and I really like melted cheddar on toast but I had really been hoping for a good rarebit. Anyway. Miles above most of the cruddy Lanark Co pubs, but has room for improvement. Will return, with a careful eye to strategic ordering…

Terrible, ordered special, it was mediocre at best then I asked to take what I hadn’t eaten home(I have teenagers) and was told they will not pack up the leftovers on a special. What? I paid for this!
