Having been a fair few places and to a fair few bakeries… I can now honestly say that no where is better than little Haggis Farm Bakery on Saturna Island! I will be the first to admit that Saturna is not a great place for the casual visitor. It does not have any public camp grounds and it is one of the smaller Gulf Islands with few places to go that aren’t forest, park, or striking sand-stone cliffs. That being said, give it a try! The locals are friendly and the holiday home owners are lovely people(in my unbiased opinion). The island itself offers a lot as well, not the least of which is this bakery and the amazing things it pumps out. How do I describe the thrill of being able to walk into a bakery, pick out what you want, drop some money by the door and head on out. The reason why this experience is so novel is that there is rarely anyone else in the building. The bakery is attached to a farm and so I presume the owner is out working all day and doesn’t really have time to deal with drop in customers. You can also get a lot of things at the general store and can even find the baker there many days. Now… what to buy. Where do I start… for me the nettle pasta tastes like home and is a rare local treat that I can never turn away, the chocolate chip cookies are legendary and my brother and I can crush a bag of them in under 2 hours, the spelt cookies are a perfect chewy treat, and the Butter and Mince Tarts are the perfect end to Christmas lunch(or any other meal for that matter). No matter what you get I promise you this, from that point on out, you will get cravings for it that nothing else will satisfy. I dream of Saturna chocolate chip cookies! So my advice to you: hop on a ferry, get to Saturna, find your way to the bakery and get something to go… before I eat it all!
