Great tarts. Wow. Brought them for a dessert. But half we’re eaten before dinner. Kinda pricey but doesn’t matter

Of course you can drive to Kenilworth if you want, but the Buttertart Trail for me starts at Dees!

The ever-so-humble buttertart! While the cupcake has stolen the culinary spotlight for baked goods that fit in the palm of your hand, spawning not only cookbooks, but television shows and celebrities, I would like to say a few words about the sorely neglected buttertart… and more specifically about Dee’s «buttertarts to die for» — they are simply delicious. What makes them special — well where to start? How about the truly spectacular crisp pastry on the outside! But there is also the gooey buttery filling on the inside(and whatever fillings you may or may not want — I mean, there are a dozen different varieties here). And I would be remiss if I failed to mention that the buttertart is also well balanced between the filling and the pastry, and that’s pretty important as well. As to the various flavours available, there are the traditional«no raisin» and«raisin» buttertarts(there is the on-going debate in the buttertart world as to whether or not raisins belong in the buttertart, but Dee’s give you your choice of both versions), as well as pecan, maple walnut, Skor and butterscotch chip, among many others(the ones listed above are my favourites, but your mileage, as they say, may vary). With Canada Day coming up, why not pick up some of these wonderful buttertarts, a Canadian invention that is as unpretentious as we are! P. S. There is a little sitting area at the back of Dee’s where you have the buttertart Wall of Fame… I didn’t notice it before the last time I visited.
