A classic style of donair/falafel joint that had some promise based on offering bison and lamb donair in addition to the usual suspects. Unfortunately, while meat quality was okay, they do not spit roast it at all, so it lacks any delicious browning flavor. Toppings and wrap were unremarkable, so this spot gets only a middle of the road rating. Docking a point for small meat portion relative to similar spots, unless you pay extra an get the 1990’s warmongering inspired«Scud» size.

I’ve been to Uncle Moe’s a few times, but won’t be going back after my last experience there… There was a really slow guy working the counter, and it took him seriously 20 minutes to make 2 donairs for the people in line in front of us. I guess it wasn’t entirely his fault, since the guy front of us was totally idiotic, asking about bread sizes, all kinds of other stupid questions, then trying to switch his drink from a juice to a pepsi AFTER he had already paid, because the pepsi was $ 0.25 cheaper. anyhow, when I finally got to the counter, i could see the lettuce and it was TOTALLY yellow and wilted, and was seriously FLOATING in a bucket of water. I’m not sure about the rest of you, but lettuce standing in water is pretty gross to me… so as i’m looking at the lettuce, the guy behind the counter barks out«what are you looking at!!!» and I said«oh, just checking out the lettuce.» he then holds up his arms and says«hey man, everything’s fresh…: and then grabbed the lettuce container and proceeds to pour out the standing water into the sink. At this point, I would have just left and gone elsewhere, but being that we had already invested so much time in this donair, I had to stick it out. so he made our donairs with that lettuce which was pretty gross. i ended up throwing out about half the donair cause I just couldn’t get it down after seeing that lettuce.

On a cold snowy day I was lost driving around the NE, it was lunch-time and I could chose a random fast food joint or continue my quest to find a Halifax donair in Calgary. In the distance beckoned Uncle Moe’s…or well the lighted sign in the mini-mall beckoned but just doesn’t sound as cool. Both the beef & chicken donairs are good, well seasoned and burnt just the right amount for a chewy donair. Basic toppings include lettuce, onions & tomatoes with your choice of sweet or tahini sauce. The owner fills the pita with toppings & sauces, however I had hoped the hot sauce would have actually been spicy. Quality food, reasonable price and the owner threw in a half hour of good conversation for free. If you’re looking for a burger alternative in the NE, Uncle Moe’s is worth a look.
