I went to the memorial forest yesterday for the tree service & to ‘pick one out’ for my dad who passed away in April. it’s a beautiful park, and very well maintained. Surrounded by walking/bike paths, with a great view in every direction. it’s very nice to think that each tree is in memory of sometime, and to know that people have a beautiful place to go to think about their loved one. nature is awesome. I am very thankful for this park!

I noticed the big sign that read McInnis & Holloway Memorial Forest. Having not yet had occasion to take advantage of any funeral services in Calgary(*fingers crossed that I won’t ever need to*), I wasn’t familiar with the name. But then I discovered it was a funeral home in town growing a forest of trees dedicated to the memories of loved ones from clients, planted at no extra cost to the family if they so chose. It’s a lovely idea. According to its website, McInnis & Holloway planted 4,200 here between 2000 and 2005. In 2005, the City decided not to renew the contract for the planting of these trees in Nose Creek Valley. Probably one or two good reasons for it, but my first thought is: Who terminates the contract for letting a memorial forest grow? WTF? Then again, maybe the area was in danger of tree overcrowding or will be when all of these trees are full grown? Who knows. Either way, cool idea. If there weren’t a big fence and construction equipment right by it at the moment, I’d probably give it four stars. Kind of makes me want to go plant my own tree or two now for my lost loved ones.
