At Market 17, you will discover the charm of a European-style market, with thoughtfully selected fresh 100% organic produce and crusty breads made with love, not artificial preservatives. We feature refreshing alternatives to the mechanized foods filling ‘big box’ grocery stores. We’re lovers of local food, advocates of organics and supporters of ethical, sustainable agriculture.

There’s plenty of yummy choices for vegans and vegetarians, gluten-free diets and folks with food allergies. We have kombucha on tap by local brewer, True Buch; refillable glass bottles are avilable to keep everyone’s carbon footprint low.

We’ve got the best of local coffee in YYC: Fratello, Rosso and 15 Kilo Roasters. To pair with your cup? The best local baked goods from Sidewalk Citizen Bakery and Corbeaux Bakehouse.

History

Established in 2011.

Market 17 is 100% independent and locally owned. Our market is part of Casel Marché — Calgary’s most unique culinary destination. We are proud to be a part of the Marché community alongside Cassis Bistro, J. Webb Wine Merchant and Vie Café.

Our warm, friendly staff connects you to trusted brands by researching ingredients, learning company history and tasting it all ourselves! Our local edibles will inspire you; we have trusted relationships with many Alberta and BC growers. We want you to eat local and organic whenever possible, and you’ll see that evidence on our shelves. Fine cheeses, artisan baked goods and deli meats are all chosen with care.

Market 17 is also home to Vie Café, tucked inside the market and offering an array of fresh breakfasts, lunches and dinners to go. We also proudly serve locally roasted Fratello coffee and fresh baked in-house authentic French pastries from local company Pascal’s Patisserie. Nice store, friendly staff, great coffee bar and baked items, amazing selection for the square footage BUT the prices are completely out of this world! I shop for organics at Super Store and Community Foods mainly and I know my prices.

This is one of those rare occasions where I’m happy I haven’t gotten around to reviewing this place before now. Market 17 is just down the street from my most frequent temporary Calgarian abode and over the years it’s kept me in virgin coconut oil and over priced chips. Up until this point it was a solid and enthusiastic four stars.
But on this particular visit, this little bodega stands a cut above.
I’m in town for a somewhat sad reasons and this place has been a life saver. First off, I flew in from Scotland and jet lag is kicking my ass. This place had all the holistic whatnots to keep me upright my first few days. From jet lag tablets to coconut water — I loaded up on the good stuff.
But where this place lands that coveted five star spot is through their service ninja extra add ons. This place went the extra mile and I love them for it.
First off, they were out of Emergen C. No problem, one of the staff rustles up five packs and hands it to me free of charge.
Because they have kombucha on tap, I’ve been popping in here most mornings. Each time someone asks me how my grandma is. Excellent personal touch.
They’re cheerful, genuine and informative. They’ve definitely landed as my go to for holistic whatnots and organic business. And staff, if you’re reading this:

If you can afford to buy organic, go there and support them at this little lovely local market !
The bread is lovely, the fruits are always fresh and there is even a small café with an outdoor patio during the warm season.

Five stars for the service. I stopped by while I was walking my dog. Though dogs aren’t welcome inside, the manager was so nice to check on my dog while I was shopping. Unfortunately, my dog whines (chirps) like a high pitch bird when he can’t see me. FYI — Market has a rack outside the store so you can park your dog outside in the foyer.
Great selection of high quality product — from fancy frozen croissants, fresh mozzarella, baking goods to fresh produce. The prices are good. About the same as the farmer’s markets. In fact, a few items are same/cheaper than Safeway (fresh local beans, carrots, kale, shitake mushrooms, zucchini, etc.) Sure, a few things are a kiss more expensive, but the convenience and customer service make up for it.
Other goodies, roast beef sandwich at the deli, and bulk bin items like chick peas, popcorn kernels, quinoa, and nuts.

This is a great addition to the Calgary specialty/organic grocery scene. I love this store. The produce is fresh if a bit pricey. The staff are friendly and helpful and will bring in items if you ask. I shop here at least once a week and often more. the coffee shop makes a great red expresso misto — yum

I come here quite a bit to do my grocery shopping and wine shopping. Love the grocery selection, they offer my favourite brands from Sunworks chicken, Shefs Fiery curries, Primal soups, Vital Green Dairy, White Gold mozzarella, to organic produce. Staff are also always willing to help.

This is an adorable little organic food market that is right around the corner from my current home! There aren’t enough organic food markets in general, so I’m so glad that this place exists! They have a surprising amount of variety and lots of meat which is usually the most expensive part of your organic grocery shopping. Sun works sells their meat here so you know that’s local, and fresh! Another great quality is the large packs of frozen fish they have and for a surprisingly reasonable price.
If you’re vegan or celiac there is definitely something here for you so you should make the trip to check this place out. The only down side is that it isn’t more local. Alas, we live in Alberta and it’s much too cold to grow luscious vegetables and fruit year round.

Review #16 of Unilocal’s 30 Day Challenge 2012
After hearing much about Casel Marche since it’s inception I was very curious as to what it was all about. I’d checked out the website several times and heard many things via social media channels & city palate. So I guess in reality I was expecting a big market experience since I couldn’t visualize where it was and what it looked like.
I finally had the chance to visit Casel Marche & Market 17 while participating in a treasure hunt recently. Since we were allowed to go at our own pace I took a few extra minutes to wander around the market area. I have to honestly say I was a bit surprised at how small it was. Nothing like I had envisioned (bottom of a condo building) but much to offer none the less. It reminded me a lot of Meinhardt’s on South Granville (YVR) of which I used to frequent.
Definitely a place to stop in if you are looking for a something fresh & unique. It’s quite pricey but all fresh markets with International & local ingredients typically are. At least go for the experience, a fresh baguette, cheese, coffee, lunch at the bistro or hop over to J. Webb for a fabulous bottle of wine.

Market 17 is a real surprise. There is such a wide variety of products with everything a Yuppie could dream of eating. Vegetarians will be in their glory at the selection. Love organics? You’ve got them here.
The coffee bar associated with it, Vie, also makes your shopping experience a real pleasure. Even carnivores are not forgotten.
The prices reflect the demographics of a smaller market but with these prices comes fine quality. It was an unexpected surprise.

Casel on 17^th boasts some impressive amenities in this ‘island’ of sorts. This condo building features one of Calgary’s best restaurants (Cassis Bistro), a well-stocked wine store, a pizza joint in addition to Market 17, a neighbourhood grocery store with so much more.
What I love about Market 17 is that it has so many facets. It’s a grocery with plenty of local product from small businesses in the area, a convenience store with it’s selection of healthy selections that can be picked up on the way home or work as well as a full café with fresh coffee and pastries.
I support small business. I prefer to shop local when I can because I love to meet the people behind the goods I buy. People like me that have families and lives like mine. I feel good knowing that my money goes towards a sustainable living for real people, not faceless entities. The owners are very knowledgeable, friendly and eager to answer my questions on the many wonderful products they carry. It’s a delight to wander through the store and just look around at all the great food here. I truly wish much success to Market 17.

Okay. First, watch this:
Because you’re going to have a hard time walking through the aisles of this place without singing «Foux De Fa Fa» to yourself. BAGUETTE! The people that run this place are the nicest! They have so many vegan goods! More exclamations, because they also sell locally made vegan burgers!!! Vegan burgers that taste awesome! They exist! And for non-vegans and bacontarians, they also sell Jacques Cousteau and Boeuf ;).
Love how approachable the store and staff are; you can ask them anything you want on twitter (or in person!) and they usually respond pretty promptly. All the anomalous local snacks that wind up in my basket from here makes this place remind me of TJ’s, and that makes this often homesick Cali girl love YYC just a little bit more. They may not ring ship bells; sell $ 2 Chuck and wear Hawaiian shirts like they do at TJ’s, but they *do* host something they call #interactivemondays inside the adjoining Cassis Bistro — different. But equally rad, and with ~*free*~ wine.
It’s places like Market 17 that help to dispel the myth, that supporting local businesses is an idealistic; expensive luxury. Honestly, I found myself spending more or less the same amount for the same amount of groceries that I could get at Safeway! And Safeway never made me dinner and introduced me to new friends.

Market 17 is a unique little place. In a city with so many big box grocery stores, it’s nice to see a little neighbourhood store crop up. Although I don’t visit often as it’s not overly close to me (other corner of the neighbourhood) it’s a fun place to go. The products are mostly organic and local. So, while a little pricier than going to Safeway and picking up just anything, for the same products the prices are comparable or even cheaper. My last find was almost an entire section dedicated to chicken sausages of all sorts. Since I don’t eat red meat, very exciting!
There’s also a wine store (J Webb) right next door so that you can pick up a perfect bottle for dinner, and if you don’t feel like cooking, Cassis Bistro is connected, as well as Vie Café for your coffee & pastry needs. It’s an all-in-one market. Apparently there’s also a crêpe place going in for summer.
If you’re on Twitter check out @Market17 and look for the #interactivemonday hashtag — they have a guest cook from the area come in and make dinner (for free) for a bunch of people with ingredients all found in the market. It’s a great way to learn new foods, meet people and explore the market.

Day to Day market with locals farmers, Sunworks Farm, Blush lane. Meadow farm. They also carry a lot of organic and quality product. This my every day shopping chop.
Great addition on the neighborhood. There is Janet Webb merchant wine just attached with great selection of wine and beer.

This place is AWESOME! I was so excited when I heard a organic market was opening across the street from my house, but I didn’t think it would be this good! It’s got everything I will ever need from fresh produce to all kinds of other food. I have been there three times this week. So clean, convenient, and delicious! Definitely going to be great for those in our neighborhood!

I’ve had my eye on this spot for awhile. And by awhile, I mean ever since the Casel sales centre set up shop in my neighbourhood. That was some months ago. At first I thought: «Another condo development down the road? Meh.» There are so many of them going up around here these days. But like any good apartment renter, I had a look at the website and read a few details. What I discovered was that there would also be a market on the bottom level. A new market nearby, hey? Ok, my interest was piqued and I’ve been keeping an eye out for it every time I’d turn from 17^th Ave onto Crowchild S.
Well, good news Unilocalers! It’s now open. And I daresay, it’s a nice to have organic foods moving in just outside of downtown. It means we can spread a sustainable food culture just a wee bit further.
The market stocks everything from drinks to frozen dinners, fresh meats to produce. It’s even got a little café in it. Meats come from local farm, Sunworks Farm just outside Armena, Alberta. Sweet, Alberta-raised chicken, turky, bison, beef and the likes. Colour me sold!
Bread is sourced from 17^th Ave’s Rustic Sourdough Bakery, which has incredibly tasty breads. No Dempster’s or Wonderbread on these shelves.
As is the case with any organic food, the price points are higher than your average grocery store. The pink lady apples they stocked were over $ 3/lb. But you should see how pink they are! It’s like they came right from the apple packers in BC.
If you scoff at the price of shopping local, I dare you to take a 6 month challenge. Cut out the fast food, buy your meat from a local farm instead of one of the big boy brands, heck, ditch your popular beer and drink a craft brand instead. If you’re at all like me, you’ll find that over time you feel amazing, and it will take less food to fill you up. Turns out there’s some truth to processed foods having very little nutrition.
