We tried the steak tacos and the pork chili tacos. There was a lot of meat, which was great. The pork was dry and required a lot of flavoring. There were 3 tacos for $ 10(seemed small) and a wedge of lime. We were expecting a hard taco, vegetables, a spoonful of rice and/or some cheese. Maybe our expectations are Canadian-Mexican menu based. It was challenging to serve, because the meat soaked the tortilla. We wouldn’t go back.

Now a restaurant at 143917th Ave. SW this is the best Mexican food in Calgary. Great salsas, wonderful staples made on-site(Chorizo, tortilla chips, salsas etc.) and the mandatory bright Mexican interior colours and plastic chairs.

I’ve been following the food truck scene since it started in Calgary and have been eagerly anticipating trying out the food… any of it… I’m not fussy! Admittedly I’ve stood in foodtruck line ups only to bail when the line ups were too long & little kids couldn’t wait.
Finally one day we stumbled upon Los Compadres without a huge line up. Fate had intervened. So we wandered over to check it out. They only had 3 options available on the menu: quesadillas, pork tacos(pastor) and steak tacos(bisteck). Well I make quesadillas at home and so I never order them when we are out which left us with only the tacos to choose from. I decided to try the pork with the works and hubs got the steak without any onions or salsa(because he’s just simple like that!). My pork tacos were decent & juicy… but really not mind blowing. Hubs said his steak tacos had flavour but were dry. In the end we left feeling full but not satisfied. The service was great, the Los Compadres peeps very friendly and I love their tweets but as another reviewer has said they are not my food truck of choice.

No, no, no, no NO! A co worker invited me to join him and some others today at lunch. He choose this food truck. I go a bad vibe, and I should’ve followed my instincts. I ordered what I thought would be the tastiest choice, steak tacos The meat was dry, not flavorful, yet somehow had a ton of juice dripping everywhere… so how were they so hard to chew? Maybe it was leftover meat from another day? I should’ve know something was up when my order was served up first, yet 4 other people who were ahead of me were still waiting for their food a few minutes after I got mine. And for 10 dollars too… uhg. Never-again.

Another food truck nearby. Targeting. Fire tastebuds! Only a couple blocks from work was Los Compadres, the first Mexican food truck(and maybe only) I’ve seen in Calgary. I ordered the chirizo tacos. They were ready rather quickly. Unfortunately, I was able to pour out about a cup of grease from the container. Not too appetizing. Next, I was fairly unimpressed with the what was in them. Chirizo in tortilla shells. That’s it. No lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, salsa or sour cream. Boring and for $ 10, you’d think there would be something more in them. Now, I have always loved chirizos. The great taste and the spicy kick on the tongue make them a great dish. These particular chirizos were more like a spicy sledgehammer to the face. More spice than taste. I went through 2 bottles of water just to eat them. Definitely not an enjoyable meal. I’m not sure if I’d go back. It’s actually more of an embarrassment to Mexican food than a highlight. Perhaps even more embarassing than waking up after a night of drinking spooning a poodle.

Los Compadres was my first food truck experience, and sadly, it didn’t measure up to the hype. On a cold and windy day, after braving the weather to cross the parking lot where the food trucks had congregated by my work, I was hoping for some authentic Mexican fare to warm me from top to toes… what I got instead was a mouthful of sad. I ordered the Choritacos(an order of 3 chorizo and cheese tacos) as well as the Churro compadres(churro filled with chocolate) and eagerly anticipated a fantastic lunch. How could it not be — the combination of authentic tortillas, chorizo and cheese is delicious! Chocolate filled churro? Amazing! After waiting in the biting wind for what seemed to be an almost ridiculous amount of time, I finally got my order and scurried back to my office with my goodies tucked into my jacket to keep everything warm. I traded 1 of my Choritacos to a friend who ordered the Bisteck(3 top sirloin tacos). The Bisteck wasn’t bad — the seasoning was good, the tortilla was great, the meat was a little chewy and dry, which was surprising considering the cut. Sadly, the Choritacos disappointed. While the tortilla was delicious, the meat was terrible. It was so heavily salted and over-seasoned, I could barely finish half of one. There was very little cheese on it, and the meat was dry and disgusting. The churro did little to stave off my disappointment. I was expecting a long, hot, crispy tube of fried goodness, covered in cinnamon sugar and filled with creamy chocolate. Instead, I received a tiny, cold, chewy stick and a plastic portion cup filled with glutenous chocolate pudding in which to dip the churro. Waitasecond. Dip? I thought the menu said filled with chocolate, not«dip this in chocolate.» Los Compadres received 2 stars for it’s authenticity — the flavours are there, and the tortillas are delicious. Unfortunately, the portion sizes were«petite» for what you paid, it took an inordinate amount of time to get my order, and the tacos were so salty, I could have cried(I didn’t though, for fear of even more salt). I’m really hoping that my experience was a one-off, and that the food is actually much better. I’m a huge proponent of small business and creative dining, so hopefully, mine was a unique experience. Unique or not, though, I highly doubt I’ll be hunting Los Compadres again any time soon.

I’ve had tacos and breakfast menu a few times and I can honestly say it is always tasty, well seasoned, if you have never been to Mexico, then it might be difficult to really know what authentic Mexican food tastes like. Out of MANY called«authentic» Mexican restaurants, Los Compadres is on top of my list for sure. — Beef, pork and chorizo tacos all are well seasoned. — Coffee is the traditional type and super tasty. — Molletes breakfast, it really brings back memories of homemade breakfast in Mexico, a bit spicy, tasty… — Churros, super tasty too, although I always have trouble finishing BIG churros. I think they are actually doing a good job for being a food truck, plus, tacos? that’s the real thing in Mexico and that’s how you get them there, I know this is Calgary, but you can’t get more authentic than that, and they are also keeping up with the weather by adding tasty soups to their menu, so do give them a try if you can!

I wanted to give Los Compadres higher than 3 stars because: — Their tweets always go something like«WEWILLBETHEREAMIGOS! SPREADTHEWORDLETSSPREADTHELOVEWITHTACOS, BURRITOSCHURROS»… Hilarious. — They have this really tasty coffee for which you dont need milk or cream! Its sweet, mild and really tasty. And they let me taste it before I bought it. I’m a fan of ‘Try before you Buy’ — Mexican food is so under-represented in this city. I wanted to encourage these guys. HOWEVER, I am giving them only 3 stars simply because their tacos unfortunately don’t measure up. OKAY I recently discovered the delights of tacos in Southern US, so my opinion may have forever been altered. But I had such high hopes for Los Compadres. I almost ran to their truck when I saw them and braved a cold day just to get my hands on these little goodies. And then, I was let down. Very very sparsely seasoned, and very sparsely dressed. ‘Dress up those tacos man!’, I wanted to scream! Slather on some salsa and lettuce and guacamole and onions on that stuff! Alas, Los Compadres will not be my food truck of choice. They have a fun attitude, but I was not a fan of their food. 17⁄30
