History

Established in 1931.

Harper’s Tire was founded by John M. Harper, the Grandfather of the current owners. The original location was at 130 12^th Ave SW in Calgary and the phone number was 7878 then M7878 followed by AM7878 and finally 262‑7878. The main focus of the business for the first 30 years was retreading of tires. John used the Vulcanizing training he received from the government after he served in the First World War to make the business a success. When John retired in 1961 his 3 sons Jack, Don and Stan took over the business. The three brothers expanded the business and created a marine division that dealt in the sales and service of boats and motors. They also created a ski division which they sold in the 70’s. In the late 70’s Jack sold his shares in the business to Don and Stan. In 1990 the company was split up and Don took control of Harper’s Marine and Stan took control of the tire store. Harper’s Tire now operates 3 retail stores in Calgary and is owned by Stan’s sons, Dan and Tom.
