I received a carrot cake from here and I swear it was 70% ICING! WTH? I mean I’m literally left with a box full of icing… My friend sent me one for Valentine’s day 2016! It looked like someone took a small THIN square sheet cake and cut it into 3 parts and stuffed it full of icing! VERY deceptive… I’m literally looking at what looks like should be cake but is just basically a mold of thick icing… The icing is good but where the hell is the cake? The thickness of the cake couldn’t have been over an inch in most parts!

Elite Bakery’s slogan is «The KING of Almond Pastry» and when I first saw that, I immediately thought of how I would be disappointed after I tried their pastries. So many places like to rate themselves as the best of this or Vancouver’s #1 of that, but to be honest, I loved the almond pastries. Get the almond pastry slice with icing on it and the almond square. And you might as well pick up some samosas or Jamaican patties while you’re there.

I have been here a few times on the way to and from the gym(I know… it makes my work out useless). They have a decent selection, nothing that is overly flashy and decorated, however, they have the basics and then some. Prices are very decent, well organized and the staff here are very friendly. One of the best bakeries in the city that is a hidden gem.

Every day I go to this Bakery, the place is clean and the shelves are stocked daily. I think this is a better Bakery than the Polish one beside 7/11, since I had a fight with the Owner of BJ Bakery. She seems to think her place is Union and sticks up for her Employees. I have heard customers of Elite say that the Apple Strudel tastes like Original Apple Strudel. They said that other Bakeries make it but put different things aside from what should be there. All the Recipes are handed down from Magnus Larson from Denmark(Originally). One guy today bought an Apple Strudel and was delighted when he heard that all Recipes are Authentic. He was going to buy the whole thing in the first place.

Even though I have lived in the Lower Mainland my entire life, I know very little about any community outside of Vancouver. I have always lived in Kits and my ignorance of our suburban towns is so high that I get panicky any time I am east of Commercial Drive. I recently secured a contract job with BC Hydro that required I commute to Edmonds in Burnaby. On my first day of work I got off the Skytrain and was totally disoriented. If someone had walked up to me and said I was in Asheville, North Carolina I would have believed them, so poor is my knowledge of Burnaby and its environs. Fortunately, one of my co-workers at BC Hydro was a huge foodie who lives in that neck of the woods and immediately started firing-off recommendations once she discovered I was a Unilocaler. One of her favourite places was(and still is!) Elite Bakery. In a squat, unattractive strip of small shops on sleepy Rumble Street lies Elite, with its massive ‘ALMONDKRINGLE’ sign in the window. This is a Danish bakery, and I did not know much about Danish baked goods before eating here. I’ll save you a Google search and tell you all you need to know about pastries from this part of the world: almonds. Every freakin’ item in Elite(besides the out-of-place samosas and buttery copenhagens) was either almond or marzipan based, including the massive and eccles-like kringle. I bought some kransekage cookies and an almond-chocolate slice. Both had an outstanding texture, with crisp exteriors and chewy interiors, and the almond flavour didn’t slap you in the ansigt. The service was also great. I guess there IS good food beyond the far reaches of East Van!

OK so the Copenhagens are UNREAL. The best I’ve ever had. Skip the ones with chocolate and icing. The texture is unreal the the buttery sweetness is perfect. Cheap to. Skip the samosas. I know. Samosas? Serious. Stick to what you do best.

I actually pass by this place almost all the time but never bothered to stop by until I saw a review in the Vancouver Sun. They’re a Danish bakery and have a lot of almond based pastries. Their most popular item is the Almond Kringle — Which is delicious! It’s a pretty small bakery. I was there at I think 6 and I got the last one. The have other pastries all probably just as good.
