History
Established in 1992.
Bert and Elsa Hopman founded Sewing Machines Etcetera in Grimsby in 1992. At the time, Elsa was running a sewing and alteration business out of her home, and teaching children to sew. Bert had extensive experience in marine and small engine repair, and he was a natural fit for service technician. Sewing Machines Etcetera was born out of a desire to share the love of sewing through good quality products and education.
In 1996, we opened at Burlington and subsequently sold the Grimsby operation to be better able to serve our local Halton/Hamilton customers. The business soon grew out of our premises at «unit 12», so in 2005 we moved to the much larger unit 3 at Fairview Gardens, 4155 Fairview Street, Burlington. Our bright spacious display and classroom areas please staff and customer alike.
In 2009, Bert and Elsa sold the business to their daughter and son-in-law. Today, Nick and Erika continue in the high caliber service established by their parents.
Meet the Business Owner
Erika K.
Business Owner
Erika learned to sew from her mom at the age of 8, and got off the bus at Sewing Machines Etcetera when she was growing up. She has been involved in the business from the very beginning, even selling an embroidery machine at the age of 12.
Erika took a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo and her passion for designing and crafting shows in the lessons she creates for 5D Embroidery Software.
Like her mom, Erika loves to teach and troubleshoot, helping customers have the best experience possible in their sewing journey.
