We were hungry driving back to the city from cottage country. Since we had taken the more rural hwy 27 — rather than the parking lot they call the southbound hwy 400 — we didn’t think we’d have a lot of food options. We noticed 4 The Halibut and thought maybe we could pick up something to eat on the road to tide us over. We assumed it was a greasy diner, based on the fact that it is attached to a(possibly defunct?) gas station. But we completely underestimated this delightful establishment. We liked it so much that we decided to sit down and eat a full meal there. Everything about this place is monstrously sized. There is a ton of seating, an extensive menu, and the biggest portions EVER. The server told us that the owner is Greek, and«she doesn’t know what a small portion is.» Accurate. My friend’s poutine was the size of a feeding trough. The pancakes were so big they were served on an oversized platter rather than a normal-sized plate. The all day breakfast items(omelettes, scrambles) are all made with 4 eggs — 4!!! — and come with substantial sides. Outstanding reviews all around from my dining peers. I had the vegetable wrap and appreciated how it was made from scratch right in front of me, with whatever veggies I wanted. 4 The Halibut also had some of the friendliest and most sincere restaurant service I’ve ever had. The staff were sweet and welcoming; it felt like we had been coming here for years. We all left grinning. I saw on the restaurant’s facebook page that they are one year old this month — maybe in time they will come up with a vegetarian gravy for the poutine. Fingers crossed! TL;DR — Generous portions, well-priced, delicious food.
