How the hell did I end up in the town of Sint NIcklaas when I was trying to be in Antwerp?
Oh well, here we are and staying at a shit hole hotel. At least we’ll get an amazing dinner in at night! Nice view of the town square, too. Oh, and there’s wifi!
Service 5÷5− European standard, which is very slow paced… but the staff was so very nice and took the time to explain things to us in English since it was a Dutch-​only menu. (Thanks, ladies!)
Food we did the 3 courses for 29 Euro.
Amuse bouche starter! Yeah!
Bread AND butter! Yeah!
— Salad with green apple, fish, red onion, and horseradish sauce– ⁵⁄₅ There are few times I can remember eating a dish that piques my curiosity and prompts me to eat another bite out of amazement and whimsy. This was one of them. Horseradish and apple with fish? Mind. Blown.
— Beef carpaccio– ³⁄₅ Far less memorable. Thinly sliced meat and cheese. It was too heavy for me and one note, but good news was that it was my friend’s, not mine: D
— Meat skewer with frites– ⁴⁄₅ Some of the meats were good, some were dry. It came with frites and a salad, which always rack up extra bonus points in my book. The sauce it was served with looked like a broken curry though. No clue what it was.
— Shrimp with pasta– 3.5÷5 Served with two sauces, one of them was the same sauce on the meat skewer plate. It was kinda confusing, but the shrimp tasted nice!
— Crème brulee– ⁵⁄₅. DUDE. JUST. SAY. YES. Another «please leave me alone. I want a minute to close my eyes and be by myself» type of moment. One of the top 3 crème brulees I’ve eaten in my life. Perfectly smooth custard with a crisp exterior. If no one was watching, I would have stuck my face in the dish… to be civil instead, I tried scraping the entire thing clean with a spoon. The only regret left for this dessert was not sticking my face in the dish.
A fabulous dinner in Sint Nicklaas! Definitely stop by and eat outside while the weather is nice… bring a jacket as it is cooling down though!
