On entering Mokabon you do feel like you’ve gone back in time — an impressive counter, moody lighting and dark furniture. And as the oldest coffee shop in Ghent you’d expect no less! Polite but not happy smiley service and a bunch of locals settled in for the afternoon at the back staring you down — we took a seat anyway! The coffee menu is cool and explains the different types of coffees you can have. The waitress pops over straight away and your coffee doesn’t take long to come. The coffee itself was ok — a bit burnt tasting but hey. From what I can tell no food served however locals had brought in their own lunch. It was an experience and I’m glad we popped in but not a must do while visiting and I think I had nicer coffees while I was there!

It’s sad that they don’t make waffles anymore. It’s seems the owner of this coffee house has changed(not sure), but staff are different, also rearranged the furniture. This place used to make the best waffles in Belgium! Sadly I have no reason to come back

No, no, no, no! I came across this place on Unilocal, with being new to town… I wanted to bag myself a great coffee. OMG, no… This place from the aesthetics of a good coffee house however it was terrible, I ordered a flat white, she didn’t know what it was… I then said, ok latte and she went off to make it, what came back was boiling hot milk poured into terrible terrible coffee.

I really enjoyed finding this place. I wanted a cappuccino and got it with whipped cream. Yum. I was also craving a very simple ham and cheese sandwich, which they had — only 3.50 euros. It was good too and the staff is very nice.

Promised so much, yet delivered so little. This place has the look and the smell. Unfortunately it is a façade. The espresso was burnt, lacked crema and tasted like the swill served up in golden arched hamburger chains. I admit that I took two sips before ditching this sump oil. There is a distinct taste of uncleaned espresso machine… not that they can blame their tools for such a poor coffee.
