After wandering around the neighborhood {interesting experience to say the least, as the alleys right behind this main one are part of the Red Light District} looking for a place to eat, we were happy to have finally landed on De Orchidee. The concept reminds me a bit of how Mongolian BBQ works at home, except it’s for a Thai dish. We walked in without reservations, but we’ve read in reviews and based on our experience in Belgium, reservations are suggested. After being seated and given menus that we couldn’t decipher, the server came back to take our drink orders and to give us an idea of how things worked in the restaurant. You fill a bowl with veggies of your choosing. They have a pretty impressive selection {even wood ear fungus}, and you can pile that as high as you’d like. We weren’t shy about it, though what we ended up with was A LOT of food. Then you approach the counter and pick your protein and your sauce. If you don’t know what kind of sauce you’d like, the lady behind the counter is kind enough to ask you your preferences to help you pick a sauce. The curry was recommended to me since I wanted a little spicy with coconut milk. It’s fresh and relatively inexpensive. You know what you’re putting into your dish. If I ever found myself in Ghent for a longer period of time, this might be one of my local staples.

Good and cheap thai in the middle of Ghent, Make sure to call in advance for a booking, since it’s often packed with people. When you decided what you want, you go and fill a plate with vegetables, don’t be ashamed to fill your plate to the max capacity, these vegetables are afterwards being used to cook your meal with. Delicous and cheap!

De Orchidee ist eine echte Entdeckung. In diesem Thai-Wok-Restaurant, das besonders von jungem Publikum besucht wird, stellt sich jeder Gast aus ca. acht verschiedenen Gemüsesorten eine Mischung auf seinem Teller zusammen(Tipp: schweres Gemüse zuerst), sucht sich eine Sauce, z. B. Curry-Kokos, aus und wählt dazu Tofu bzw. Fleisch. Dann heißt es nur noch warten bis die Kochkünstlerin in einem ihrer fünf Woks das Gewünschte angebraten hat und es von ihrer flinken Kollegin serviert wird. Schmeckt super! Achtung: Das Restaurant ist sehr beliebt. Deshalb evtl. reservieren. Preis 10EUR pro Teller
