Delicious crispy waffle that melts in your mouth. I loved the waffle with whipped cream on top. Mmmm.

See you soon in Antwerp!

Making a voyage to Antwerp I knew I wanted to hit every museum in sight, eat chocolate and eat chocolate on top of waffles, not necessarily in that order. I did it all and made the waffle stop a number of times, but my stop at Desire De Lille was not nearly as successful as the others. There’s no getting around it, gooey chocolate on anything is pretty good and when popped on top of a hot waffle, it kind of hits the spot. However, choco-liquid can not fix everything. My waffle at Desire De Lille was overcooked and a little chewy, unlike the melt in your mouth sensations I had other places and this really took the whole waffle hype down a notch. It went even further South from there as Desire De Lille gives you the waffle in a sort of box that makes the waffle stand up(unlike other places which just give it to you on a plate and give you a mini fork to go in), presumably to make it easier to eat, but this is a complete disaster. You can’t really get to the waffle because the box obstructs you trying to bite it and unfortunately, the boxes are not tight so as you are walking and trying to devour your waffle, drippy chocolate is coming out of the bottom of the box and going all over your jacket, hands, pants, etc. While I enjoyed the chocolate, I did not enjoy my chocolate pants nor did I enjoy the waffle here.

Dessert time in Antwerp? My God. The options really are endless. But fear not friends, because Desire De Lille, while apparently not entirely unique to Antwerp, is unbelievable. Star 1: How was the service and atmosphere? Super friendly guy, fast service, perfect English and a great location. Can’t argue with that. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Sure, you can get a waffle for € 1 virtually anywhere in Belgium, but with the freshly made quality of what Desire De Lille offers, it’s well worth the € 3 you spend: As for me? I opted to give Apple Beignets a go, and for € 4.50 I ended up with five of these babies: Sure, a little pricey. But worth it. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? Wow. I’ll be honest, this was my first experience with Beignets, and I was absolutely blown away, especially after watching them made from scratch right in front of my eyes. Absolutely amazing. Additionally, the waffles are unreal. Dual Stars Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? This is really, really tough, because I want to give the fifth star here, but the somewhat limited selection is killing it for me. No Macarons and a weak selection of ice cream had my gaze turned, and for that reason I can’t say I’d come on a daily basis even if I lived in the area. No Star Granted. No Star Granted.
