Antwerps Sportpaleis

I was here a few weeks ago for a Lionel Richie concert with my wife. I had been here before, albeit years ago.
When going to a concert or sporting event, the biggest plus you can have is some place to park. With this place and another venue right next to it (that had another concer on at the same time), parking is pretty much impossible unless you get there very very very very early. It is right off the motorway though, so easy to find.
What I like about this place is that you can get food and drinks (with a wine bar/​section) there and at a reasonable price. You can get a beer for a few Euros and I’m not talking no paper cup; I’m talking a real beer (Pulp Fiction?). In the USA you’d pay $ 10+ for a Lite beer. The food is good too, although nothing fancy, but again, reasonably priced.
Nice venue overall but nothing really special.

Comme dit dans les précédents avis, le Sportpaleis est à coté du périphérique, l’accès est facile. A savoir aussi l’offre de restauration est importante sur place et aux alentours. C’était la troisième fois que je vais dans cette salle. Je n’ai jamais été déçu par l’accueil. En effet, l’accès vers les gradins est rapide, il y a plusieurs entrées. On entre sans bousculade, sans empressement. C’est vrai, Quel que soit la place, on profite bien du show. Concernant la fosse, le parterre… ca dépend. Avec Rihanna, il n’y avait pratiquement pas de fosse, mais des rangés de chaises. Et, hier soir, pour Katy Perry, il y avait bien une fosse.
Au sujet des parkings, j’ai stationné la voiture dans «Slachthuislaan». C’est sur l’autre rive du bassin voisin du Sportpaleis. Il y a comme une zone d’activité. Les entreprises ouvrent leurs parkings moyennant 5 € la soirée. Il y a toujours de la place. Mais, attention, quitter ces parkings pour atteindre l’autoroute toute proche m’a demandé 45 minutes hier soir.

The Sportpaleis is a multi-​purpose indoor arena located in Merksem, just outside the city center.
Despite what its name suggest, the venue isn’t often used as a «Sports Arena». The Sportpaleis mainly serves as a concert hall. With a maximum capacity of 23.000 (!), Sportpaleis is not only one of the largest concert venues in Europe but has also been listed as one of the most popular in the world.
Easy accessible by public transport, just hop on tram 2,3 or 6 and hop off at the stop «Sportpaleis». U can als take tram 5 but I don’t suggest u to take it. It’s much farther away and u have to cross a path with poor illumination. Creepiness level +++ !
There’s also no need to buy a tram ticket, your ticket for the venue allows u to use freely of trams and buses to and from the Sportpaleis.
Just like most of the concert venues, Sportpaleis has a policy of banning professional camera’s (SLR, micro ⁴⁄₃). So it’s just gonna be u & ur smartphone. And please don’t bring ur iPad!
To sum up: a great concert hall for people who live for live music!

Je suis allé pour la première fois au Sportpaleis samedi passé et waou!
C’est grand, même GRAND, propre, facile d’accès avec les transports en commun, acoustique pas mal du tout (aucun acouphèné en sortant du concert!)
Pour l’anecdote, j’y suis allé pour les Backstreet Boys (fan foreveeeeeeeer) et c’était la démence pure!
Seul «bémol», la fosse n’en est pas vraiment une et le parterre comprenait des places assises. Non mais qui reste assis à un concert?! (des BSB en plus, impossible)
Bref, une salle au top!

J’y suis allé 2x et à chaque fois du plaisir pour la vue et les oreilles!
Pour ceux qui viennent en voiture, il y a un gigantesque parking (il vaut mieux.) mais comme partout payant (aucune idée du prix!) et juste à côté d’une sortie de «tram/​métro» pour ceux qui vont en transports en communs (à faire, la gare d’Anvers est sublime!).
Maintenant l’endroit en lui même est gigantesque! Difficile à croire qu’il y a autant de monde! En plus peu importe où vous vous trouvez, tout est aménagé pour que chaque spectateur puisse bien admirer le show! La qualité audio est parfaite.
Pour se rendre à la salle tout est bien organisé autant à l’arrivé, qu’à la sortie!
Ok généralement lorsqu’un concert se déroule là bas les prix sont assez élevés mais ça en vaut vraiment la peine!

Ça fait la 2ème fois que je me rends au Sportpaleis. Cette salle me plait bien. Facile d’accès, on sort du ring et hop on y est. Il y a plusieurs parkings aux alentours, cela coûte 5 €, les policière et la sécurité vous guident.
Vous marchez 5−10minutes et vous voilà à l’entrée. Il y a plusieurs entrées réparties par zones, super pratique et quasi pas de files, ni de bousculades pour rentrer dans la salle. Le son et la visibilité de la scèné sont très bien aussi.
Une fois le spectacle terminé, on sort rapidement (important à savoir pour les agoraphobes), vous rejoignez votre voiture et en route pour la maison.
Le parking Nord est un peu plus éloigné de la salle mais il vous permet de regagner le ring d’Anvers assez vite via le Canal sans repasser devant la salle et sans se taper les files.
Allez passez une excellente soirée et profitez bien du spectacle!

«Het Sportpaleis» one of the biggest event venues in Belgium.
Tickets prices depends on the artists but sometimes you need to hurry for a ticket. SOme of them are sold out in less then 2 hours.
For some music concerts you can choose between sitting places and standing places in the middle. I suggest the standing places in the middle because when the concert is good everybody on the seating stands will stand up nevertheless. And they are the cheapest!
Parking. I suggest you look up the terminus stops of the tram/​metro. For example there is a big parking in Merksem (line 2 – 3) with enough place and trams leaving every couple minutes. This parking is also very close to the Higway E19 (Breda-​Antwerp)
The venue itself has good acoustics but as mentioned by others, music can be very loud!

A lui seul, le Sportpaleis mériterait 5 étoiles: une salle énorme, une bonne acoustique et surtout des artistes de renommée mondiale.
Malheureusement, je suis contraint de baisser la note à cause de l’accès des plus pénibles pour qui viendrait en voiture ! Des files interminables sur le ring à l’insuffisance de parkings aux abords de la salle (à 5 €, contre 0 € autour de Forest National à Bruxelles…), rien de tel pour gâcher un concert avant l’heure !
Comble de la mesquinerie, la commune d’Anvers a placé toutes les rues environnantes en zone payante, qui pourtant né manquent vraiment pas de place, avec 2h de stationnement max… Bilan: prévoyez 23 € d’amende si d’aventure vous osez vous garer proprement à 500 m de la salle: Ca fait cher le surplus de concert !
Ou alors préférez les transports en commun, si vous le pouvez…

The Sportpaleis is Antwerps biggest concert hall. All major artists tend to come here instead of Vorst Nationaal, the main music hall in our capital Brussels.
I believe acoustics are better in Antwerp than in Vorst.
It can hold maximum 18.400 people and that’s A LOT. Imagine traffic around this ugly building… I would never want to live in this neighborhood, but yet this is a very crowded area.
Here are some tips…
Traffic
— AVOID THE CAR — parking is hell and LEAVING the PARKING IS HELL (takes a lot of time)
— you must pay, anywhere you park
— take the tram! It’s also veeery crowded but it’s fast.
— you can also park a little further and then walk. Please do understand that a little further means like minimum 1 km further, not around the corner. EVERYTHING IS JAMMED around the Sportpaleis, believe me
Scheduling
— please be on time, if doors open at 18h, there will already be people waiting
— if you have standing places, be there when doors open
— for seating places count on 30′ before the show starts
Tickets
— look up THE PLAN ONLINE to see where which zone is
— don’t buy them at the door, there are always people trying to buy & sell tickets but it can happen that they are FAKE (and you don’t want that)
Sound
— please TAKE EARPLUGS. It can be so loud in there! You don’t want to waste your ears.
— I am used to the acoustics in this hall but if you compare it to for example the smaller AB in Brussels, this sounds «terrible». It’s good for big shows but please, if an artist like John Legend for example would be performing here, it wouldn’t be rightful.
Price
— tickets for music shows are very expensive in general but it depends on the artist
Food & drinks
— it’s affordable. You can pay cash at one of the many bars
— bars are on level zero and on the first floor
— you can eat something indoors but there are also a lot of kebab & pizza places outside the Sportpaleis
— generally they don’t check your bag so I always take my own bottle of water or something to eat
