Must go to the top as the view is spectacular especially if the entire church, a bunch of art and artifacts as well

This is truly a remarkable place that you must go to if you’re in Vienna!
Staff: They are helpful and the tour guide for the catacombs was top notch. He was funny and engaging and delivered the information in dual languages with ease.
Venue: It is split into 5 sections. You can get tickets for each but I recommend the combined ticket for the full experience. The first section is the church. The audio guide was well done and the architecture and history is magnificent and fascinating. The next part is the catacombs. I have always wanted to see one and the real bodies and bones and wonderful tour guide brought a different layer to the experience. Then there’s the north tower, letting you go up the lift and outside. The view isn’t that great but you get to have a greater view of the art on the roof. You can also see a few things in the city. The south tower is a dizzying exercise. You have to walk up the spiraling staircase only to wind up at a gift shop, so that was irksome. And of course the treasury was an added bit of history to the church and allowed access for a view looking down at the church since it’s located where the old organ is.
Don’t skip it! Definitely a must see!

Am Abend des 11.11.2015 genoss ich hier einige Minuten der Stille. Es war für mich mehr als beeindruckend, dieses mächtige Gotteshaus in seiner schier nicht endenden Größe, stehend meine Wenigkeit im Mittelbereich des Kirchenschiffs.
Ich konnte begreifen, was meine Vorschreiberin meinte mit dem Satz: «Sehr imposant und hat eine uralte Geschichte zu erzählen.» Dieser «Erzählung» möchte ich gerne zu einem späteren Besuch zu anderem Zeitpunkt mit Augen, Herz und Sinnen beiwohnen, um das ehrwürdige Gotteshaus zu verstehen.
Liebe Wienerinnen und Wiener, ich beglückwünsche Euch alle zu diesem mächtigen Gotteshaus, mitten in eurer wunderbaren Stadt.

A truly interesting building and the inside is very impressive. Of course a part of it is almost always covered in scaffolding, but it’s well worth a look anyway. It’s absolutely breathtaking the way it sticks out of the centre of this city and the stories that can be told about the cathedral are quite interesting — if you go on a walking tour you’re likely to hear them all. Climbing the tower is well worth it also!

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is influenced by both Romanesque and Gothic design, which you can easily tell because it has a vary dark feeling. Now this may not be the most impressive Cathedral I’ve been in, but there is a lot to look at. The best part about the Cathedral is that it is free to enter (bonus points there!)! The only part you have to pay for is the tour of the catacomb or the lift up one of the tours.
I had originally planned on taking a catacomb tour here, but I was super early and didn’t feel like waiting around. Instead I paid around € 5 to take the lift up to one of the towers, which provided fantastic views of Vienna and of the architecture of the cathedral. I recommend doing this if you have the time.

This cathedral is much darker than other churches, cathedrals and basilicas I’ve seen throughout Europe. It is more of a gothic design. It was nice to get to see the treasury. It was not accessible to the public until recent years due to renovations. There are many views you’ll have from Treasury access that you won’t if you just wander within the Cathedral for free. It’s is worth it and was an attraction included with the Vienna Pass. There are however, other attractions that aren’t included such as the tower and catacombs I believe.

St. Stephan is great when you want to pay € 5 to walk up 343 stairs and still be 137 meters from the top. To be fair, it’s a great view and you get to feel St. Stephan from the inside… «you make me closer to God.» Organized religion is the greatest tourist trap. Writing from inside, if there is a hell, I hope it’s more exciting than St Stephan’s Domkirche.

A must do if you are in Vienna, spectacular city views, amazing architecture, must do the lift to the top although you have to pay its worth every penny. Bring small change as they have this info machines where you hear some history of the place.

I think that some Cathedrals massively overdo the tourist experience inside, and lose that sense of grandeur that naturally comes from architecture as amazing as this. Take Notre Dam in Paris, they put all these signs up telling people not to talk and then make really loud tannoy announcements inside.
Thankfully Stephansdom has remembered that it is a place of worship first and foremost. The area to the middle is limited to those who pay for the guided tours, but there is still plenty to see if you don’t want to pay. The access is mainly down the left side of the church, and this is one impressive building with ornately created pillars throughout.
I don’t generally do much else when visiting Cathedrals other than to walk the ground floor and perhaps light a candle. Plus the shop, I always love the shop. For this, Stephensdom was perfect, and it was quite cool on a comparatively hot day. Also, to get there on public transport was super easy. This is a must visit on any trip to Vienna.

I’ve been to a fair few cathedrals and the like, this one is certainly not high on the list.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s VERY impressive in terms of architecture, but as a tourist experience it’s not great, when compared to those like Il Duomo in Florence or the Berlin Cathedral, because more than seeing information about the cathedral and what you pay where to do stuff, you’ve got people outside trying to sell you opera tickets in a mob.

Als Wienerin in Wien als Touristin unterwegs ist sehr interessant. Wir haben ein Kombi Ticket genommen, Dom, Türme, Katakomben und Domschatz.
Unser Stephansdom, liebevoll Steffl genannt, ist der Mittelpunkt von wien. Sehr imposant und hat eine uralte Geschichte zu erzählen. Ins Detail möchte ich nicht gehen, kann man alles online nachlesen .
Der Steffl ist sehr schön und prachtvoll besonders auch die schöné Orgel. Jedoch nicht so prunkvoll und überladen wie man es von vielen anderen großen Kathedralen gewohnt ist, vielleicht grade deshalb so anheimelnd und die Seele berührend .Er ladet auch einfach. nur so ein, wenn man ein paar Minuten Ruhe finden möchte, zu verweilen .
Täglich sind ca 40 Mitarbeiter der Kirche für Gäste und kirchengänger da ‚
Damit alles seine Ordnung hat und einen reibungslosen Ablauf gewährt.

Smack in the center of the city, the Cathedral is great, and well worth a visit. Even more spectacular than the inside, is the view from the top. The elevator is interesting, and not for those who have claustrophobia issues… but a quick ride to the top, and you at in a labyrinth of catwalks and stairs that winds around the roof and tower, giving you spectacular views of the square below, and the city.
The attraction is very reasonable in price, and provides unparalleled views and a great place to get away from the crowd.

Stephandsom! A MUST VISIT on your trip to Vienna! Don’t go home without touring the church and taking a few minutes to appreciate the interior, and exterior! It is FREE to visit, and I personally would recommend paying the extra to visit the Catacombs which you can find one you walk into the church on the left side closer to the front. It is only a few Euro and worth the 30 minute fact-​filled journey! I would tell you more about it, but I won’t ruin it for you!
I would also, for the strong-​legged take a trek up the 343 steps of the South Tower (which you can find if you walk out of the church, and walk around to the right side, when facing the church, and as you walk back, you will see the entrance to the extremely spiral staircase). If you get dizzy easily or do not have stamina I would recommend not doing the trek or taking frequent breaks on your way up! The view from the top is 100% worth it. Again I believe it was a few Euro charge to access the South Tower.
Being in downtown, there are plenty of other recommendations I would make after you are done with Stephansdom.

Visiting Vienna? You can’t miss Stephansdom — it’s located in the center of the city and dominates the central plaza and the city skyline. Built on a Roman cemetery, parts of the church date back to the 1200’s. Though the church sustained some damage at the end of WWII, it was quickly restored and now serves as the HQ of the Catholic Church in Vienna.
Visitors are very welcome — there are no admission costs to visit. You can pay a little bit and tour the crypts or climb the towers if you want to. Otherwise, expect crowds of visitors, especially during tourist season (and even off season!). The side altars have gorgeous art, and there are leaflets that explain things in English if needed.
While the interior is absolutely gorgeous (especially the main altar!) the exterior is just as interesting. I love the mismatched towers and the beautiful multi-​colored tile roof. We walked all the way around to admire the gargoyles, sculptures and beautiful details.
Let’s face it, if you’re visiting Vienna you literally can’t miss Stephansdom — and you shouldn’t.

It’s a very beautiful church, both from the outside and the inside. You can light a candle and write a prayer request. You will know when you prayer is said, because it is scheduled. I like that very much.

This is an absolutely gorgeous church and a must see when you’re in Vienna. We came here on an extremely rainy day and the entire area looked simply stunning. Yes it can get pretty crowded if you’re going during the middle of the day in broad day light. But somehow, we got every lucky — it wasn’t too crowded when we came in.
It’s such a touring structure that you simply cannot miss it. Definitely come here while you’re in the area. A few other attractions to hit while walking by:

+ Cute shops outside
+ Sit in a pew and listen to the quiet
+ Also, don’t forget to check out the shops outside and get a few gorgeous pictures.
If you’re not sure what else to couple this with, might I suggest a mid-​afternoon coffee break at Café Sacher, home of the original torte? (Just a heads up, it’s way too dry, but if you’re already this far… you might as well go right?)

Der Wiener Stephansdom ist schon von aussen ein impossantes Bauwerk, das zu Recht Wahrzeichen von Wien ist. 137 m Höhe sind zwar heute nicht mehr Rekord, aber das Flair dieses Doms ist unbeschreiblich. Betritt man den Dom, erkennt man erst die Größe und Schönheit. Natürlich ist der Dom von Touristen überlaufen, aber in den vielen Nischen und Seitenaltären findet sich immer ein Plätzchen zur Einkehr und zum Innehalten — auch wenn sich das Gretchen und Dominik in SF mangels Kultur nicht vorstellen können. Ich zünde immer eine Kerze an und lasse diese immense Größe auf mich wirken. Tipp — insbesondere auch für Wiener — Um den Stephansdom besser kennen zu lernen, ist eine Führung durch den Dom und die Katakomben Inklusive Besichtigung der beiden Türme ein einmaliges Erlebnis.

Wunderschöner Dom im Zentrum Wiens. Man sollte ihn allerdings unter der Woche besuchen, da dann die Menschenmassen etwas geringer sind.
Die Fassade wird/​wurde restauriert und lässt den Dom dadurch wieder in alter Pracht erstrahlen.
Dies ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert.

Der Stephansdom mitten in Wien ist schon mächtig beeindruckend. Der Zugang ist kostenfrei, man kann allerdings nur wenig besichtigen ohne extra zu zahlen.
Wir waren ein wenig unter Zeitdruck und standen vor der Wahl, den Südturm — im Volksmund auch liebevoll «Steffl» genannt — zu besteigen oder die Katakomben zu besichtigen. Unsere Wahl fiel auf Letzteres, denn Treppensteigen war an unserem letzten Wientag einfach nicht mehr drin :)
Die Tour durch die Katakomben schlägt mit 5,00 € zu Buche, Treffpunkt ist auf der linken Seite bei den Treppn, die in den Keller führt. Unsere Gruppe war recht groß, dadurch war es teils etwas unruhig, aber unserer Führer vestand es, die Leute zur rechten Zeit mit seiner kräftigen Stimme zum Schweigen zu bringen.
Wir legten mehrere Stops ein und unser Führer berichtete zuerst auf Deutsch, anschließend noch auf Englisch. Das war zunächst etwas anstrengend, insgesamt muss ich jedoch sagen, hat dieser doppelte Vortrag — zumindest bei mir — dazu geführt, dass ich die vielen Infos viel besser abspeichern konnte als nach nur einmaligem Hören.
Wir bekamen bei der Tour u.a. die Gefäße zu Gesicht, in denen die Eingeweide der Habsburger aufbewahrt werden — schon ein bisschen gruselig! Außerdem gab’s noch haufenweise Knochen zu sehen, ganze Räume gefüllt mit menschlichen Skeletten. Vor allem, als die Pest in Wien wütete und man keinerlei Kapazitäten hatte, die Toten anständig zu begraben, wurden die Leichen einfach in ein Loch — die so genannte Pestgrube — geworfen und so «rutschten» die Leichen nach unten und füllten Raum für Raum.
Die Katakombenführung ist also nichts für Zartbesaitete, aber ganz klar eine Empfehlung!

Stephansdom stands in Stephansplatz, an ancient square located in the heart of the old city of Vienna, It was built in the 12 century on top the ruins of two previous churches which were themselves constructed over a 4^th century Roman cemetery. Named after the Christian Martyr, Saint Stephan, the church was constructed in order to transfer the Catholic See in Austria from St. Peter’s in Rome, to the Capital in Vienna. And so not only does it’s history run deep, but also it was constructed to be a powerful symbol of religious self determination at the height of Catholic Europe.
The cathedral itself dominates the old center of Vienna, with its unique free standing twin spires, and its ornate and colorful tiled roof. If you have the stamina for it, a hike up the 14 flights of the south tower will reveal some spectacular views.
The interior of the church is large, with many statues both of stone, and more uniquely of painted wood. It is not only a tourist attraction but it is also a functioning church… the active seat of the arch bishop of Austria, and also the center of the largest parish in Vienna, offering multiple services on Sundays (and more on main holidays) which include amazing organ music and an inspiring mass in German.
Another fun experience here is to go down into the old catacombs. It is spooky and inspiring at the same time.
Come here in the winter if you can. Snow makes the visage of the dom all the more spectacular.

If you’re a tourist in Vienna, you’re almost certainly going to wind up in Stephansplatz at some point. Once here, you won’t be able to miss Stephansdom even if you try your darnedest. The cathedral towers over the city from one of its most central points. If you’ve brave enough, climb all the way to the top – there are no elevators, so this adventure is not for the faint of heart! Wonderful panoramic views of Vienna await you once you make it, but it’s a pity that the barred windows get in the way of all that beauty.
If you seek even more thrill, take the catacombs tour. You’ll spend some quality time with a weirdly wonderful tour guide as he chats with you about the darker stories that cloud Viennese history, and even shows you a mass grave from the time of the plague (yes, the decayed skeletons are in full view). Definitely one of the more quirky experiences I had in Vienna, and I don’t regret it one bit.

Nach dem schon 124 einen Beitrag geschrieben haben, die ich mir natürlich alle vorher durchgelesen habe, werde ich jetzt hier und jetzt die letzten Geheimnisse lüften.
In diesen heiligen Ort halten geweihten Menschen mit gleichgesinnten Gottesdienste ab.
Sie würdigen auch ihre verstorbenen Anführer mit großen reich verzierten Grabmälern.
All mein Wissen habe ich nach stundenlanger Recherché bis in den letzten Winkel des Doms erlangt.

Den Beiträgen ist eigentlich nichts mehr hinzuzufügen. Meiner Meinung nach sollte der Stephansdom die erste große Sehenswürdigkeit neben Schloss Schönbrunn sein, die Touristen beim ersten Besuchs als erstes sehen sollte (weitere Empfehlung von mir für euch hier auf
). An frostigen Tagen wie diesen, wo die Temperaturen ein wenig in den Keller gehen, ist die wohlbehütete Wärme ein wahrer Segen.

Natürlich muss man auf den Turm des Stephansdoms steigen! Die Aussicht ist toll und die Sicht aus den verschiedenen Fenstern unterwegs ist manchmal geradezu überraschend — wann sieht man schonmal einen Wasserspeier von ganz nah?

Die Katakomben im Stephansdom sind wirklich sehenswert, das darf man sich auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen! Leider schwankt die Qualität der Führer etwas, manche erzählen viele Anekdoten und schweifen auch mal ein wenig vom Standard-​Inhalt der Tour ab, andere spulen ihren Text ab und dann auf Wiedersehen.

Der Stephansdom ist sowohl von Innen als auch von Außen eine absolute Augenweide und ein absolutes Muss für jeden Wien Besucher. Einfach unglaublich wie viel Geschichte in so einem Gebäude steckt und welch architektonische Leistungen damals schon erreicht wurde. Gemeinsam mit dem Kölner Dom wirklich eines der imposantesten Kirchen.

Der Stephansdom ist wirklich eine imposante Kirche und ist ein Muss für jeden Wien Besucher.
Der Steffl steht am Wiener Stephansplatz und besticht durch sein gotisches Bauwerk. Das Dach ist in einem Zickzackmuster bedeckt und wenn ich mich nicht täusche hab ich an die 10 Farbtöné gezählt, zusätzlich ist auf der einen Seite das Wappen des kaiserlichen Doppeladlers gelegt und auf der anderen Seite das Wappen von Wien und Österreich.
Rund um den Dom gibt es einiges zu entdecken, zwei eingelassene Metallstäbe und ein großer Kreis darüber, wie wir aufgeklärt wurden ist dass das Maß aus dem Mittelalter und der Kreis war die größe für ein Laib Brot. Aber ich will euch jetzt nicht zu viel vorweg nehmen.
Für uns war es der Treffpunkt für unsere Wien Unilocal-​Tour und übersehen kann man ihn auf keinen Fall.
Leider hatte ich noch keine Gelegenheit ihn von innen zu Besichtigen oder gar den Turm raufzuklettern.

Wer in Wien ist, sollte auch den Stephansdom besuchen, denn es ist ein sehr imposantes Gebäude und spiegelt innen auch Reichtum der Kirchen wieder. Besonders das reichverzierte Dach ist schön anzusehen. Alles ist eigentlich in sehr gutem Zustand und eine Besichtigung wert.
Wir waren wieder einmal am Stephansdom, der eigentlich ein Muss für jeden Wien Besucher ist. Rund um den Dom ist alles sehr gepflegt. Im Inneren ist der Dom mit seinen Fenstern und dem Altar ebenfalls sehr sehenswert. Man staunt, wie gut alles erhalten ist. Aber bei jedem Wien Besuch konnte man sehen, dass immer das Ein oder Andere restauriert wurde um das Wahrzeichen zu erhalten.
Jetzt im April 2014 waren wir wieder am Dom und sahen dass manche Teile saniert wurden. Damit der Gesamteindruck aber erhalten bleibt, ist das Teil das saniert wird, mit Folie abgedeckt, die mit dem Originalteil bedruckt ist. Tolle Sache.

Ein Muss für jeden Wien-​Besucher. Von außen sehr beeindruckend, innen dann doch schlichter als gedacht. Aber lohnenswert. Lohnend vor allem auch die Führung, bei der es runter in die Katakomben geht. Für alle, die es leicht gruselig mögen (und der Tod muss bekanntlich ein Wiener sein), ein absolutes Highlight.

There is certainly many beautiful churches with their amazing architecture to see all over Europe. If you’re visiting Vienna than Stephansdom should be on the to do list. It’s marvelous structure should definitely not be missed. I had the fortune to see and pass by Stephansdom throughout my visit in Vienna. As Stephansdom was part of the view from my hotel room. The church can be appreciated it during the day and night. At night the church lights up and has another beauty of it’s own.
With that being said, I gave it 3 stars because I felt it was partly over-​rated with tourist and pricey. I did not pay the admission to enter inside of Stephansdom. Everything I would have seen by paying the over priced admission fee, I have already seen on travel shows or read about it. While the structure of the church was beautiful, you will quickly learn in Europe there are many churches equally if not more majestic. In another part of Vienna, another church called Votivkirche is so under the radar. It’s structure was stunning inside and out! Yet because it isn’t as well known or advertised there was hardly any tourist there. I think the day I went, there was literally 6 – 7 tourist inside. Best part of it all, IT IS FREE! That is definitely worth the visit!

Tolles Highlight, das man gesehen haben muß. Auch im kostenlosen Bereich gibt es schon viele tolle Eindrücke.

Joa. Was soll ich sagen. Stephansdom halt. Schön, schön groß, die Audiotour ist manchmal bisschen langatmig, aber hey, ist halt Geschichte. Auf jeden Fall sehr sehenswert.
Kleiner Tipp: Wenn ihr eh vorhabt euch alles anzusehen kauft das Kombiticket für Audioguide, Katakomben und Zugang zu Nord– und Südturm. Gibts im Moment für schlappe 12.99 EUR.

Absolutes Meisterwerk menschlicher Baukunst. Man spürt förmlich die Ehrfurcht vor diesem gigantischen Dom!

Ich kann mich erinnern wie ich früher als Kind am Stephansdom vorbeigegangen und dann die Kärtnerstraße zum Ring runtermarschiert bin. Damals war für mich klar, dass Wien das Zentrum der Welt sein muss, denn eine derart imposante Stadt muss einfach wichtig sein.
Ein paar Jahre später betrachte ich Wien zwar mit mehr Realismus, aber die Imposanz des Stephansdom ist geblieben. Auch beim hundersten Mal schaut man ungläubig in den Himmel und fragt sich wer um Himmels willen so etwas Tolles bauen kann. Der Trip hinauf zahlt sich übrigens aus, ist zwar nicht ganz günstig aber der Ausblick ist wirklich ein Highlight für Besuch aus dem Ausland.

Ein sehr beeindruckender Bau, prunkvoll. Wir hatten das
Glück, einer öffentlichen Messe bewohnen zu können. Dadurch hatten wir freien
Zugang zum kompletten Innenraum und ich konnte viel fotografieren. Ich finde,
es gibt innerhalb der Kirche aber ein bisschen viel Kommerz. Hier befindet sich
ein größerer Souvenirladen, so was kann auch gut außerhalb eingerichtet werden. Trotzdem; unbedingt besuchen!

Es gibt einige Dome die höher sind als der Stephansdom, doch der Stephansdom erreichte seine Höhe von 136m schon 1433, also somit 450 Jahre vor dem Kölner Dom und dem Ulmer Münster.
Weiters bemerkenswert ist, das der 2. Turm der Nordturm unvollendet ist.
Anschauen sollte man sich auch die Katakomben, wer es gruselig mag.
Katakomben
Unter dem Nordturm führt eine Treppe in die Katakomben hinab. Dort unten liegen nicht nur die Skelette tausender Wiener, die im Zuge der Auflösung des St.-Stephans-Friedhofs exhumiert wurden, sondern auch die Urnen mit den Eingeweiden jener Habsburger, die in der Kapuzinergruft bestattet liegen.
Führungen: Mo-​Sa 10, 11, 11.30, 14, 14.30, 15.30, 16, 16.30, So, Fei 14, 14.30, 15.30, 16, 16.30 Uhr.

Ubicada en pleno corazón de la ciudad de Vina, la Catedral de San Esteban (Stephansdom) es uno de los monumentos más llamativos y caracteristicos de Viena. Desde la torre puedes observar toda la ciudad, las vistas son inigualables. Para subir el horario es de lunes a domingo 09:00 — 17:30 horas y el valor es de 3,50 € para adultos y los niños de 6 a 14 años pagan 1 €.

Der Wiener Stephansdom ist das Wahrzeichen von Wien und ziert sogar die Verpackung der berühmten «Manner Schnitten». Der Wiener Stephansdom wurde aus Sandstein errichtet und ist aufgrund seiner Anfälligkeit auf Umwelteinflüsse eine ewige Baustelle.
Der höchste Turm des Stephansdom ist der Südturm, er ist 137 Meter hoch und kann über 343 Stufen bis zur Türmerstube erklommen werden. Erwachsen zahlen dafür € 3,50 und Kinder € 1,00.
Der Ausblick über Wiens Dächer ist wunderschön, der Aufstieg auf den Südturm macht sich also bezahlt.
Montag bis Sonntag habt ihr die Möglichkeit, den Südturm zu besichtigen.
Der Aufstieg ist von 09.00 bis etwa 17.00 gestattet, eine Voranmeldung dafür benötigt ihr nicht. Selten kommt es hier zu Wartezeiten.

Es la catedral de la ciudad, de estilo gótico y que destaca por los azulejos coloreados de su cubierta, una imagen que caracteriza especialmente a la ciudad.
También es famosa por su gran aguja, denominada Steff. Se puede subir a lo alto (136 m) y tengo que admitir que las vistas son impresionantes (el horario es de 6 a 22 h). Su interior está lleno de numerosas capillas y durante las misas no está permitido el acceso a los turistas.
La catedral está situada en una plaza peatonal del mismo nombre y donde encontrarás a numerosos hombres vestidos de Mozart que intentan venderte entradas para la filarmónica. Y en un lateral hay varios coches de caballos que ofrecen paseos por la ciudad.
