Hafner’s am Hundsturm in Margareten(5th district) is one of Vienna’s smaller bakeries and konditoreis … but one of its tastiest as well. Many people know Hafner’s from the popular branch a couple of streets north in the 6th district(Mariahilf) but I only go to the one in Margareten. I like the setting more in Margareten. It’s in the neighborhood with perhaps the coolest name in Vienna — Hundsturm(Dog Tower) and it’s right on the park in Hundsturm. There are only a few tables outside and a few inside but you can usually get a seat or you can sit in the park. The pastries here are excellent and they seem to often have something different from the other bakeries. Without a doubt my most favorite is the Ribisel-Topfen-Stangerl.(Loosely translated this is a red currant and cheese elongated puff pastry). You’d have to be a denizen from Middle Earth not to like this. So when you’re in or anywhere near Hundsturm, check out Bäckerei Hafner. You’ll be glad you did.
