My boyfriend and I were on a trip to Europe from San Diego, CA. We decided to rent bikes and ride from Vienna out to a traditional Heuriger. We were there at technically the wrong time(mid-October) but ultimately it turned out to be perfect! None of the other Heurigers that we had on our list were open and we were starting to despair that our long, albeit gorgeous and peaceful, bike ride had been for nothing. Just before giving up we knocked on their door & were delighted to see such friendly faces greeting strangers from afar! Local, retired gentlemen took us under their wing and helped us to know what to order from Anni Gruber. Her food was absolutely delicious and we truly felt that we experienced the best of traditional Austria while there. Adolf Gruber was very friendly and even though he didn’t speak English you could tell that he was delighted to share his hospitality and fabulous wine with us. I can’t remember the name but the early wine(barely starting to ferment) was a special treat that I think is only available in the fall(although I could be wrong). If you want a great day-trip from Vienna I encourage you to duplicate this special memory of ours! You won’t regret it!
