Sometimes I’m just craving for Filo flavors. I don’t really cook much of it, but every now and then I’ll look for things like… bagoong(fermented shrimp paste) or sinamak(spiced vinegar). Fortunately I moved closer to this area, and I’ve been able to go to Manila Mart to get my dose of Filo stuff. The people who work there are friendly. They also sell hot food too, if you’re looking to grab a bite to eat. Bonus: they sell(a Filipino brand) graham crackers, great for making pie crusts!

My one stop shop for all my Filo needs. It is conveniently located across West Ryde train station and stocks a wide variety of Filipino food, cosmetics and Filo shows and movies on DVD. They are open until 7:30PM on weekdays making it really handy for those coming home from work on the train to get whatever they need. Sometimes they do run out of items but it’s just a matter of asking when the next batch would be coming in. The owner is a lovely sociable lady who is always up for a chat and happy to give tips to newcomers to Sydney. I’ve been to other Filo shops and they lack the sense of community that Manila Mart has. It truly feels like a home away from home, which is really great for those away from their families. It’s a good place to find out what’s happening as they often have ads for Filo events posted in the shop, and they stock the free Filipino newspapers. They serve home cooked Filipino food and you can come here for a meal while watching TFC or to get takeaway. They also offer money remittance and courier services.
