Jacob’s Ladder

As a shortcut Jacobs ladder is a good way to get from Mounts Bay Road to Kings Park. However it seems to have cool points as a exercise facility for folk to run up and down several times. I’m into fitness but this is silly really! Im sure it’s just so they can say ‘I did the ladder 8 times this morning…’ I don’t get it!
View from the top is good though!

Jacob’s Ladder is worth doing at least once when you’re in Perth, if nothing else to say you’ve done it. A few more times if you really want to get some great exercise.
The good:
It’s a great place for some exercise.
It’s definitely worth a visit at least once if you’ve never done it.
It’s certainly more interesting than a stairclimber in a gym, especially on a nice day.
The not so great:
The views aren’t really all that great especially compared to the rest of King’s Park.
The stairs can get pretty crowded.
The ugly:
Sometimes when it gets crowded there are people who decide to try to go around slower folks going both up and down, creating bottlenecks.
There are some people who stop in the middle sometimes to take pictures or take in the limited views, also creating bottlenecks.
I’ll definitely go again when I’m in Perth.

For years I used to walk/​run/​crawl jacobs ladder after work a couple of times a week. It is a challenging set of stairs ideal for fitness. It was a relaxing way to end the day. It has become over run by personal trainer groups and all sorts. I have lost a shoe and been bumped and knocked by people that have no etiquette, so I stopped going.
In the middle of the day when no one is there, it is great!
At the top it offers a lovely elevated view of the river and houses. At the bottom of the ladder there is a Chinese restaurant and bottle shop.

If you want to die a painful death then head to Jacob’s and run up and down hundreds of steps until your heart explodes. After 5.00pm it becomes very busy and more difficult to keep your pace as the stairs become very crowded. I’m a much bigger fan of the less painful Mount Street just around the corner.

Just do it — hurts afterwards but in a ‘I’ve been whooped by a set a stairs that I underestimated’ kind of way … Good perve spot for the über fit during peak hour (5−6pm)

The first time I visited Jacob’s Ladder was when I just arrived in Perth, I was told that it was something everyone had to experience. At first I was a bit disappointed with the ordinary concrete staircases as I was expecting some really interesting design and architecture, and after walking up those 200 and something stairs I wanted to strangle my friend, but in the end the stunning view of the Swan River and the city was well worth the sweat. The majority of the time Jacob’s Ladder is swarmed with fitness fanatics running up and down getting a quick and intense workout, so for those of you who are like me and just like to take your time be sure not to visit during peek hours — early morning, lunchtime and early evening, as you will be sure to get in the way of these fitness junkies.

Jacob’s Ladder, if you’ve never climbed it, sounds a lot more majestic than actually is. It’s not a grand, sparkling climb of stairs for tourists to pose for photos against, no (I thought it was before). It’s really a pretty run-​down set of concrete stairs that locals run up and down to get in a short and fast workout.
Fit, wealthy forty-​something men and women frequent the ladder in the late mornings. Before 8:00am, it’s the enthusiastic CBD workers who come before work, and some on their lunch break.
If you’re coming for the first time, stick to the left and stretch excessively, because you can bet your quadriceps you’ll be sore the next day, and the next day and probably the next day too.

As a tourist attraction a flight of stairs is a bit of an anti-​climax. It’s not that big, it’s not ornate, it’s not surrounded by particularly interesting plants or buildings. There is a bit of a view of the city from the top. But if nothing else, it’s a great place for tourists to see the dedicated fitness fanatics of Perth in their natural habitat.
As a workout area Jacob’s Ladder is a great facility. The tall trees around the stairs make for a bit of respite from the hot Perth sun as you sweat it out running up and down the steps. As you go up and down the steps you’ll come across people from all levels of fitness. Some tourists just trying it out, some leisurely walkers, some taking it slow, some running it, and others on their tenth time running it in a row!
Just make sure you KEEP LEFT or you’re bound to get knocked into buy a fitness freak who is focusing on making it up the steps in under 30 seconds and doesn’t care who’s standing in their way!

Take a let turn onto Cliff street just before reaching the Edith Cowan Clock Memorial and head all the way to the end. On the cliff is a daunting 242 stairs, commonly known as Jacob’s Ladder. For years, both local and tourists have sweated it out, many for the killer cardio workout and others for the literally breathtaking (you’d be surprised how much those stairs take it out of you) view of Perth city and the Swan River. Keep in mind that Jacob’s Ladder is no secret stairwell, so you may have to fight the rush, and remember that it is not for the faint hearted!
