The Aqualife Centre is one of two leisure centres owned and run by the Town of Victoria Park(the other being the Leisurelife Centre at the corner of Kent & Gloucester Streets, East Victoria Park). Both offer gym, group fitness, personal training and limited café facilities whilst running community events such as senior’s bingo throughout the week(more at Leisurelife than Aqualife, but events vary). The Aqualife centre’s gym is smaller than its parent venue, with more emphasis on ‘aquafit’ classes in its outdoor 50m or indoor 25m pool. There’s also a decent leisure pool, hydrotherapy program, spa and steam facilities. Adversely, the Leisurelife wins in terms of offering four glass backed squash courts and three indoor sports courts which can be booked for basketball, volleyball, netball, soccer and badminton. They also run a children’s fitness program every school holidays. I have a dual membership to both leisure centres for the gym facilities only(I don’t utilise the pool at Aqualife) so this review is purely based on the gym and group fitness classes. Though Aqualife’s gym area is about half the size of the Leisurelife, I prefer it due to its extended opening hours(5:30am — 9pm Mon-Thurs, 5:30 — 8:30pm Fri, Sat & Sun 8am — 6pm whereas Leisurelife closes every weekday afternoon between 12 — 4:30pm, is closed Sat afternoon and closed all day Sunday) and the fact that it’s a real ‘community gym’ patronised by people from all walks of life. I mean this in the most positive sense; it’s like seeing a cross-section of the Victoria Park community all in one little space. Though you might see the odd bodybuilder or hot young thing dressed from the latest Lorna Jane catalogue, the majority of patrons are just ‘normal people’ trying to improve their fitness: mums working off their baby weight, elderly gents trying to maintain their muscle mass, teens(16+) trying to ‘get active’ with mum or dad and office workers trying to halt the ‘middle aged spread’. There’s no intimidation, no grunting, no yelling or guzzling protein supplements. Just people being healthy with no discernible egos. My kind of gym. The gym instructors are also reflective of the above; though they’re all recognisably fit and enthusiastic, they’re of all ages and definitely don’t resemble cover stars from ‘Fitness Magazine’. I’ve had positive conversations with most of them. In majority, they’re down-to-earth, approachable people who are happy to offer a few pointers whilst providing space if you’re ‘in the zone’. In terms of equipment, both Leisurelife and Aqualife have a decent range of treadmills, cross-trainers, steppers, bikes, rowers, pin-loaded equipment and free weights etc. with yoga mats, fitballs and free floor space for stretching(though Leisurelife has almost twice the space of Aqualife). Changerooms and shower facilities are pretty reasonable and regularly cleaned. Neither has boxing facilities. Both are air conditioned with additional wall-mounted fans but I’ve found this to be inadequate for Perth summers(maybe it’s just me). There’s also easy parking at both venues in associated lots. All in all, the Victoria Park gym facilities won’t suit everyone(if you’re a shredder who wants a ‘gym crush’, go elsewhere) but in my opinion, the Aqualife is the perfect place to go if you want to work on your health in a non-intimidating, friendly setting. As an added bonus, both venues are right near the coffee strip for a post-workout pick-me-up.

after the bug infection that caused blindness was found here I decided to give them another go as it’s been a few months. at the moment they are offering a special $ 3 between 11am and 3 pm and that’s all I am really willing to pay. I’m not paying full price to have walkers in the fast lane, kids in the walking lane and sprinters in the slow lane.

Aqualife is near Oats st train station behind TAFE Politechnic West building. The outdoor(8 lane — 50m) and indoor(25m) pool are heated. Not so busy and the great thing is the opening hours on weekdays, 5:30am to 9pm! The leisure pool is perfect for kids! My daughter loves the pool and we just signed up for the toddlers swimming class. Aqualife also offers group fitness classes, pool aerobics classes, steam room and spa.
