Specialties
Totally local, deeply green, ethically eclectic
The Owl and the Elephant is an eclectic, recycled café in the heart of Uraidla serving fantastic coffee, breakfast and light lunches made with local produce.
History
Established in 2014.
The Owl and Elephant was started in 2014 following a meeting of people in Uraidla concerned that the town was dying. Of the 200 people who attended, the great majority wanted to see a café open in the town, somewhere they could come together and meet. Our café is a fabulous place for parents and children from the local kindy and kindergym, cyclists who are out for a beautiful day’s ride in the Hills, some of the retired people from Summerhill and a place where kids can come in after school have a hot chocolate and do homework while they wait for parents to pick them up.
Everything we do aims to support our local community, our fantastic coffee is roasted at Ashton, just 6kms away and our milk comes from Lobethal. All our fit-out is recycled furniture, diverted from landfill through being picked up from hard rubbish, gumtree free etc. We think very carefully about everything we put on your op-shop plate, therefore all our eggs and meat are free-range. We don’t do cruelty — ever!
