If my memory serves me correctly, The North Shore Providore started life as a meat exporting business(which is still does). The owners found that they had a few people coming to the premises to purchase so they made the decision to open a retail branch. Around the same time, a family member was diagnosed as celiac, so they began the journey into finding gluten free foods. As they found things they liked, they stocked them in the shop. The business has evolved into a gourmet providore that stocks beautiful meats, a great range of gluten free products, and gourmet relishes, sauces, chocolates etc. They have an interest in stocking Australian and local produce, so you will find chocolates hand made in Windsor, snack bars made in Hornsby, and various Hunter Valley and Southern Highlands products to name a few. The owners staff the business, and they are very open to new suggestions. They also hold tasting nights for various products they stock, such as the Hunter Valley cheeses they carry, or, prior to Xmas, the gorgeous gypsy ham and other pork products. They send out a regular newsletter that advises of these events and the ones that we’ve been to have been really well attended. Last week I stocked up on fresh and frozen meats, including lamb rump — an amazing find that was beautiful cooked on the barbecue. Periodically they have a meat freezer sale, so I picked up a rack of pork that was 10% off and is crying out to be roasted. This is also my go-to stop if I’m entertaining and need gluten-free foods. They have a great range of products to choose from, and it is very, very rare that I’ve had to go elsewhere for anything gluten-free. I’ve compared their prices to other shops and they compete really well, even to places like Thomas Dux, which is owned by Woolworths, and can sell for less due to buying power. In fact, when things we like at TD’s have been discontinued, The Providore has managed to stock them for us! Give The North Shore Providore a go, it’s well worth it.
