If your meeting up with some friends or just need somewhere close to Hyde Park to try out — this is a bit different. It almost feels like you are in Newtown. The bartenders are donning their epic beards and gave great service. Selection of alcohol is pretty decent as you expect for a city venue and the space it takes up has small tables as well as seating booths on both left hand and right side of the bar at the back. Because it’s in a basement of toilets have funny signs to guide you around to get there. Men’s are directly on the right of the fire exit(if you were wondering?) One of the most interesting things are that for $ 5 delivery you can get Mary’s Burgers brought in for you. I enjoy Mary’s more than I care to say so this is a would be a big decider! Its a place I wouldn’t bring a date(for those that are dating) but I would go back to for a catch-up or just part of a larger night out.

So Baxter’s has opened up another bar and yes it has a wall of bottles. Saying that this place is round the corner from my work, so I come here often. The bar tenders here work magic. I have never had a bad cocktail — usually walk up and ask for something good, and they always delivery. If you are a beer drinker, they normally have one beer on tap — and then a cheap beer sold in a can. But I come here for the variety in spirits. Honestly the best thing about this place is currently it is not crowded, but give it a few weeks and I’m sure this place will be overrun by people — same as Baxters. So enjoy it while we still can.

Another reviewer said Ramblin Rascals is just like Baxter Inn without the whiskey wall — that would be because it’s owned by the same people. Saying that, I enjoyed my first visit here, even though it was not that easy to find a table — but for a bar, I guess that’s a good problem to have. The beer selection was good. The cocktails were excellent. The wine list was not too long, and not too expensive by the bottle. The spiced corn kernels were delicious. who needs dinner when you can have all the essential food groups covered? Would I return? Yes.

G’Day me ol’ China plates! Cop a load of this Near and Far. Get that Pigs Ear down your Angora Goat… and other relevant Aussie Rhyming Slang. Speaking of outdated forms of language, if Swillhouse alumni keep opening bars I’m going to run out of Greek-based numeric descriptors. It was kind of them though to open this latest edition right around the corner from French class bringing the Tetralogy to… wait for it… a Pentalogy. When that question comes up in pub trivia, you’re welcome. Rascals has that old familiar feeling. Plenty of dark wood and leather and your favourite beardy bartenders. These guys have the friendliness and lack of hipster ‘tude that I hate to say has been waning at the Frankies of the world of late. It is possible Ramblin’ Rascals hasn’t been found by everyone yet or it’s possible it’s not in the best spot. Park Street is particularly scummy but hopefully with this and the revamped Criterion it’s on the way up. We arrived at 9pm on a Thursday and pretty much had our pick of the booths and the free cups of Corn Nuts(yum). The menu here is fairly simple. A few good Aussie wines and a few good Aussie Beers. I had the Nail Pale Ale($ 8). The local Suit Convention down the road must have finished because the place later started filling up with Suity McSuitsons. In suits. Not really the crowd you expect(or particularly want) at a place like this but again it’s a symptom of the location. Despite the suit parade I enjoyed myself with my new French class friends. I would have liked to stay longer than one beer but that car isn’t going to drive itself to Wollongong at 5.30 tomorrow morning. Nah worries mate, I’ll be back again I’m sure. I’m yet to try the naughty Coke Spider.

Another decent hipster bar in the CBD. We just stumbled upon this one before dinner for a quick whiskey sour. The cocktail was decent, the staff were friendly, packed with happy Friday-arvo people. It’s kinda like Baxter’s Inn without the whiskey wall. We’ll definitely be back.

From some of the bar staff of Shady Pines & the Baxters Inn comes Ramblin’ Rascals. A similar deal; friendly bearded hipster barstaff, cool vibe, great selection of top shelf liquor & cocktails. What’s not to like?
