Sensational value, love Mappen and Oiden for a fast cheap meal. Rice instead of noodles at Oiden, deep fried chicken, a whole lot of yumminess when you’re feeling like something that’s as filling as it is light on the pocket. Like Mappen, Oiden allows you to build your meal bit by bit, paying for what you eat..

I’m not one to rave about«mall» food but Oiden Bowl Bar is AWESOME! Okay it’s not really considered one of those mall food court stalls but this place is located in a shopping plaza in the CBD. Look for a small storefront which also has some seating outside. Even though their place is small, it doesn’t skimp out on serving yummy donburis and other Japanese tasty foods. And if it’s your first time here, I suggest to give way for others while you check out their menu before getting in line because there are a lot of regulars and they’re in and out of this place. For any newbie, you really can’t go wrong with any of their bowls because they’re all very delicious and will satisfy you. I went with a few friends and we got to have a little tasting of what others had sush as the chicken and beef bowls, takoyaki and the deep fried pork, all were GREAT! The freshness and flavors were all so good. The place itself just has a great smell once you enter and you see them prepare your food in front of you. Besides ordering your meal, there are other a la carte items where you can just pick up and you pay at the end and find yourself a seat. Crowds aren’t ideal for this place since its concept is to get you in and out but there are a few tables around the area. And what a treat that this place is very affordable, it doesn’t have to be expensive in order for it to be a Japanese experience like how other places are nowadays. Oh and don’t forget cash, since its CASHONLY!

Fast +++ efficient and tasty humble food. Love the communal dining and cafeteria style servery. The beef, rice with gooey poached egg. Yum! And sooo cheap. Three of us dined for less than $ 30. Well worth the tip.

Cheap, quick and yummy. I went there for sooooo many times, and the Pork Katsu and Lemon tea are my favorite!!! Never get tired of it!!! It’s especially busy at lunch time on weekdays, and it’s welcomed by many people who work and live around. The choices are multiple, you can get a set if you want. I’ve tried varies kinds of meals and they are generally good. If you want to grab a quick and satisfactory meal when you are hanging around, then this place will be your best choice, believe me.

This place is always busy, and for good reason. There aren’t many places around where you can get a meal for $ 4, not even McDonalds. But at Oiden, $ 4 goes a long way, for that you can get a small but filling bowl of chicken, beef or salmon on rice, or a small Japanese curry. Did I mention they were only $ 4? Plus, this isn’t your standard suburban shopping centre style imitation Japanese, this is the real deal run by and for Japanese expats and tourists, it’s as if a Japanese fast food joint was teleported from Shinjuku to Sydney’s entertainment district. If I lived nearby I’d be down there daily, it’s cheaper than cooking at home.

This place was recommended to be my a friend and deemed it as cheap eats. I am always down for cheap eats and it’s really good! We always get the salmon bowl and honey lemon water. It’s a quick walk from where we live and it never disappoints! Everything is priced really well and service is quick. Unfortunately it’s cash only but that was expected. I definitely keep coming back cause it’s just too good to pass up!

Great quick cheap Japanese option. I had the Salmon bowl large for $ 9.50. Upgrade to set for $ 2 more which includes miso and salad. Service was quick around 1245 on a working day lunch and there was plenty of seating. Tables are kept relatively clean too as everyone removes their own tray. Recommended as a healthy(depending on what you choose), quick and good value option for lunch.

Good value Japanese dishes. Tried the Ontana BBQ beef and was very happy — very tender beef and flavoursome rice. There’s also a good selection of imported drinks to explore. Make sure you bring cash, as they don’t take cards!

I found Oiden because it’s next to Mappen. After trying both, I prefer Oiden even if I like Japanese noodles better. They are very similar Japanese restaurants. One serves noodle, and the other serves rice. I tried Favorite 3, not bad to taste and with great value.

Actually a regular one is enough for girls and that would be around $ 8! Value in the city CBD! Although it’s a little bit too salty for the sauce katso chicken rice.

Oiden Oiden Bo Boiden… Banana Fana Fo Foiden… Me My Moiden… OIDEN! Oiden will forever be linked to my early days in Sydney — when I was afraid to spend more than $ 10 on a meal since I was unemployed in a foreign land. My two(2) favorite bowls: Ontama Beef Bowl(Stewed Beef w/Rice and Soft Boiled Egg) Oroshi Beef Bowl(Stewed Beef w/Rice and Ponzi Infused Radish) Large for only $ 7.90!!! The place is hidden away in a quasi-shopping centre on George Street. It can fill up quickly during peak hours. But there are plenty of tables just outside the restaurant, so you’ll always have a place to sit and enjoy your food. I love sitting by the giant window at one of the bench seats… It’s a perfect place to people watch and feed into every voyeurs fantasy — I turn on my «O» Face when I know people are watching me eat. I make that beef bowl sexier than Miranda Kerr at a Victoria Secret Fashion Show. I only know this because people don’t run away, but rather rush to queue up to order :) I like adding a ton of crispy tempura flakes to my bowl as well as chili powder and a squirt of chili sauce with every spoon full.

Delicious beef rice bowl with kimchi and half-boiled egg for $ 9. Green tea is great. Curry dishes is not really special. Go for beef or chicken instead.

I ate here a few times during my time in Sydney, and I thought it was pretty good. It’s not the best quality, but they aren’t aiming for that. It’s meant to be cheap and fast(Japanese fast food), and they do that very well. It’s cash only, but you really don’t need much cash hahaha. The place is really affordable, even if you’re a poor college student. The portions are decent, and the taste-to-price ratio is amazing.

Oiden is like Menya Mappen next door, but for rice bowls. The main thing going for this place is the price, which is shockingly cheap by Sydney CBD standards. The food, however, is nothing to write home about. I got the beef bowl and a salad. Both were just so-so, and the rice in the beef bowl was actually a bit mushier than it should have been. If you’re on a budget like I am, stick with the noodles next door.

[Cash Only !] [$ 0.20 extra for to-go containers] Agreed with fellow Unilocalers that this place has good prices(considering how expensive eating out is in Sydney). We ordered 1) Teriyaki Chicken 2) Pork Katsu 3) Takoyaki($ 2) 1) Even though we ordered a large bowl, the portion size was quite small(boo!). As you can see from the photo, there were only 5 small pieces of chicken. Unfortunately the chicken was a little dry. 2) Not sure what’s the difference between a regular and a large bowl. Im guessing it’s the amount of rice they put in the bowl.(I wouldnt order a large next time, too much rice for two pieces of pork katsu). However, the pork katsu was crispy, love it ! 3) Yum Yum Yum ! Would love to give it a 4 star but because of the dry chicken, im giving this place a 3 star :( There are tables/seats inside and outside the restaurant. It’s pretty darn hot inside, so I would recommend eating outside :)

A set meal for $ 4.60? With 4 different components? Right in the middle of the George St entertainment district? No. Impossible. Was what I thought before rocking into Oiden full of piss and vinegar and blustering like a WWII general with a walrus mustache and a penchant for trench warfare. And yet there it was. A tray with a bowl of rice topped with chopped shallots and tempura flakes, miso soup with noodles, coleslaw with sharp Japanese dressing, and a little plate of a mystery something that was as tasty as it was unknowable. Slather chilli dust and soy on to taste and walk away stuffed with a pocket full of money you’ve saved. The rest of the menu looks epic, but really, the set meal is the dog’s bollocks. If I was a student I would never leave except to go to the bathroom. Or I would just wear a nappy to solve that problem and literally never leave.

My friends and I usually come to this food court on a Tuesday night before we go and watch a cheap movie at the Events Cinema on George Street. These are one of our dinner spots because the food is great and its amazingly cheap(for Sydney). You can get a medium size bowl of curry, teriyaki chicken or other yummy Japanese dishes for about $ 6! There’s usually a queue out the door but it goes pretty fast. The teriyaki chicken is super tasty, great sauce. Recently tried to vegetarian bowl which included kimchi, soy mince, spinach and a few other yummy veggies. I added the soft cooked egg on the top and I must say the egg makes all the difference. They also have complimentary tempura flakes and green onions that you can add as toppings. This dish was not only yummy but filling. Great food, great value, friendly service.

This place has all the ambience you’d expect from a small Japanese eating establishment you’d find in the train stations over there. In a sense where you choose what you want, then pay, and go sit down whereever there’s a seat(note: communal seats). It’s very good value $ 4 — $ 5 for curry and rice, which few places in Sydney can match
