Affordable bakery located in the Westfield Mall. Perfect place to grab something sweet while shopping. I had to try a Lamington and it was nice and light. The cream center added the perfect amount of sweetness to the entire cake.

Is the ¾ coffee(aka ristretto aka 22.5ml shot) a dying genus? On level five at Westfield Sydney’s Becasse it seems so. First going to Jones The Grocer across I was met with question marks all over the face after asking for a ¾ flat white. Their and Becasse’s response was«you mean ¾ full?» «No ¾ shot», I replied. «So that’s ¾ milk, right?»(Thinking«Gaaaah! I’m still in Sydney, am I not?») «No, a ristretto. That’s a 22.5ml espresso shot.» By that time I felt like a smart-aleck coffee connoisseur. At least at Becasse the penny dropped for the slightly less confused barista at mentioning«Ristretto», though judging both are using the same cups I believe Jones The Grocer across Becasse and Becasse are the same. After all that I wouldn’t expect much from the coffee and at least here I wasn’t disappointed: it really wasn’t great. I leave the 3rd star for Becasse’s range of pastries, which are worlds better than their coffees.

Once upon a time, when I called Sydney home, there was a place on Kent Street named Becasse. Beside it, Plan B. An off-shoot of the empire led by Justin North and one of the best wagyu burgers I ever did taste. Fast forward 6 something years and I no longer call Sydney home, and North’s empire on Kent Street is no longer. Thankfully, as part of the Westfield rejuvenation in the Pitt Street Mall, the Becasse name lives again as a bakery and you best be leaving behind concerns about calories as you walk to the counter. As far as pastries in a up-market food court go, these are quite the addition to your morning coffee or to take back to your in-laws for afternoon tea. There’s ample range from large«all for myself» pastries to pieces suitable petite fours but snap them up quickly. Upon returning for a second glance many of the ones the in-laws and I had wanted were gone.

This is the best patisseries that I’ve tasted so far in Sydney. Having tried their cakes a couple of times, they have always been consistent, consistently amazing! Their efforts to always ensure their standards are held high ensures that the customer will be never disappointed. So when you have that craving for a good cake you can trust Becasse to deliver. Mille-feuille One of my favourite cakes, it’s easy to find the Italian one or vanilla«simplified» slice. Their version didn’t have the icing on top as a grew up to like. However, all elements that were presented were prepared faultlessly. That custard and cream layer mixed with the pastry is very hearty but refreshing. Feuilletine This was the first time I have ever seen this cake. It’s an instant crush, it’s sparkly golden icing is a stunner, then you look below to find its layers crispy feuilletine base, raspberry jelly and a rich chocolate layer. All those textures really make each mouthful equally blissful. Conclusion Consistent and flawless. Those are the most important in pastry, pastry is almost a science and Becasse executes classics with its own flair very well. If you have tasted better pastries in Sydney than here leave me a comment or message.
