I have undergone several sleep studies here over many years (both overnight polysomnography and the daytime multiple sleep latency test). The sleep technicians have always been friendly and knowledgeable. The room has always been clean and it’s pretty quiet (although I’ve heard from the technicians, it’s less quiet on the nights they’re doing paediatric tests!). Breakfast is OK, but of course it’s hospital food so nothing to rave about. The last time I was there all day, they did tell me I could eat all the ice cream I want, so that was pretty nice!
Sleep studies can be a little daunting at first, but they don’t watch you sleep all night through a window. They connect you to a lot of leads and these send data to the technicians while you sleep. If something goes wrong with the leads (for example, one of mine came off), they’ll take a look and fix the problem if they need to, but they don’t come in and out of the room, and you’re essentially just left to sleep. Most people can sleep fine, although it is a bit less comfortable due to the leads, which can get tangled if you turn around too much.
If you’re staying overnight and driving yourself home, park in the SJOG underground car park, but if you’re being dropped off or you’re coming by just to pick up a CPAP machine, there’s a car park from Cambridge Street (across from Joseph Street) for the after hours clinic that’s much closer to the sleep centre.
