Recently, I was on the hunt for a futon mattress. I already had the base and I thought I would be so clever, buying something that was neither bed, sofa, nor sofa-​bed. Genius! As fate would have it, purchasing a new futon mattress is a significantly difficult task. They are fairly rare.
With this in mind, I stepped into The Natural Bedding Company at Stanmore, my heart set on purchasing something nice and softer to sleep on than the bare slats of the futon. The gentleman who served us was very knowledgeable and friendly, offering all kinds of facts about how comfy this mattress would be. I was ready to make a purchase and the all-​important money question came up.
The helpful store clerk quoted us a price of $ 1000 without pausing a beat. I did the «oh, sure — can I get that as a written quote?» thing and silently thanked myself for not fainting on the mattress and potentially having to purchase it as a result.
I slipped out (written quote in hand) and never returned. If you are looking for a futon and this sounds about right, then fire away. The accommodating staff will help you. For everyone else, I would consider a bedroll and bindle: hobo chic is much more affordable.
