The thought of fish and chips often conjure images of TGIF/Applebees/etc or frozen entrees for me. A Salt & Battery showed me what real fish and chips suppose to be like. Wishing for the whole deal, I opted for the fried food platter which consisted of fried fish, fried calamari rings, fried scallop, fried shrimp, and french fries. First of all, this isn’t beer battered, it was breaded. Secondly, this is a lot of food for one person… The chips were pretty standard fare, crispy and lightly seasoned. Fish was fresh, doesn’t have the frozen taste that I’m all too(unfortunately) accustomed to. The calamari rings came with 2 variety, one was the standard breading and the other had an unique seasoning to it that I couldn’t place. Anyway all this fried food was completely offset the truly authentic greek salad of cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, olives, feta cheese all topped with olive oil. Order and pay at the counter, take the number, sit down, wait 15 minutes for food. The staff were friendly and helpful, but were quite busy with busing the tables, taking orders, and bringing the food out. They only have outdoor seating. On nights with a slight breeze like the night I came, it was a great experience. However I can’t imagine coming here during the summers when it regularly hits the low 30C. I just need that AC.

Love this place! The food is always wonderful. The staff is friendly(as is the chef, when he has to be out of the kitchen). :) And the name just makes it even more fun! Definitely on our repeat list & top of out fish & chip shop list.

On Saturday around 3−4pm I ordered a $ 9 hamburger and chips meal and my wife ordered a $ 10 fish burger and chips meal. The hamburger was a thin slice of beef on two giant sesame buns. Every bite was full of bread and not much else. Even if the buns were smaller, the beef patty was pitiful. No exaggeration that a Hungry Jack burger would’ve been bigger and better tasting. The chips were extra crispy, which I like but not great. My wife’s fish burger, instead of having a single piece of fish, had what looked like 3 tiny fish pieces. They forgot to include the sauce. I’m not sure about the other foods but their burgers aren’t good. I won’t be going back.

Phenomenal chip shop just up Carmody road from the University of Queensland. The 412 stops here pretty regularly too if you don’t care to make the between-classes walk out there. They have a variety of fresh fish for you to choose from, either to take home and cook on your own or for battering/crumbing/searing in their kitchen. All plates come with chips and a salad. Their house salad is OK, the Greek salad is much better by far. My only complaint is that they don’t keep malt vinegar in the house despite multiple repeated requests for it. I’d even pay an extra 50 cents.

Great food, unfortunate name. We got the family platter, which is four pieces of battered fish, a giant platter of battered fries, eight calamari rings, four crumbed prawns, and a plate of salad, for $ 50. Totally worth it. We were four people and we were completely full by the time we got to the end of it. The food is very good, fresh fish with the perfect kind of batter — a little crispy, not too greasy. Great fries as well. I’m not sure the tartar sauce is actually tartar sauce… more of a garlic paste, but I’m not complaining, it is was still pretty good. Nice outdoor seating in a covered area, as well.

This is where you’d often find me when I wasn’t in the mood to go to lectures. A Salt & Battery is the perfect distance from uni for you to be able to take a relaxed stroll off campus and be able to come back easily when you need to. I do hear fellow uni students making hyperbolic statements about this place all the time. «OMG. IT’S THEBEST F**KINGFISH I’VEEVERHAD. EVER. SERIOUSLY.» It is pretty good. Probably not the ‘best ever’, but it’s good enough for me to return time and time again. Perhaps it’s not so much how good the eats are, but how big the servings are that win fans. Uni students don’t have a whole lot of money, and so being able to fill up on an old time favourite like fish and chips for cheaps is a total score. I’d say it’s definitely one of my favourite fish and chips stores, maybe for no other reason than I love the name.

Described as «one of the best fish and chips shops in Brisbane» by an enthusiastic uni student, Salties is definitely up there. It’s only a few minutes’ walk from UQ on Hawken Drive so its main clientele consists of friendly(and a little boisterous) university students. But that adds to the laid back atmosphere of the place. Salties is open 7 days from 8am to 9.30pm so you can have breakfast, lunch and/or dinner there. It’s a relatively small venue with two rows made up of four tables that seat 4 per table and a row for two per table. It can be a tight squeeze if the ends are taken and you have to sit in the middle. I arrived around 8pm and even in the rain the place was almost packed. The food is reasonably price considering the amount you actually get. I ordered the Single – cod, calamari rings, crab claw and chips – and as much as I tried I couldn’t finish it(and I can eat my share when I’m hungry). The chips are some of the best I’ve tasted: crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside with just the right amount of salt. They do offer fish, steak/beef and veggie burgers as well as salads for anyone not into the classic fish and chips. If you’re in the area or don’t mind a little trip to St Lucia, Salties is worth a go and you can rock up at pretty much any time.

Salt n Battery is a great place if you’re poor but need something filling. The owners are extremely friendly and definitely know how to cook some fish and chips. It’s not going to be the best food in the entire world but it gets the job done. That being said, it’s definitely better than a lot of other fish and chip places. If you’re a regular you get looked after too, which is really nice. They’ll throw in a generous offering of chips or a few extra scallops. A friend and myself had a burger there that was massive. It was truly huge and was, by all accounts, delicious. They have a unique brand of soda they serve called ‘Boylands’ and they also do a pretty good milk shake.

When I was a poverty-stricken uni student, some of the best memories I had were of birthday dinners, hangover brunches, or just ordinary meals at A Salt and Battery. Affectionately known as Salt ‘n’ Bat, this Fish and Chip shop is frequented by ravenous uni students and St Lucia locals. It is a BYO venue which means you will often find a table of 20 or so college kids escaping bad dining hall food while charging up for a night out at the RE. While Salt ‘n’ Bat is clearly a uni kid hang out, its tasty menu(especially the awesome battered chips and Salt and Pepper Squid) attracts a more diverse crowd. Anyone aching for some good fish and chips will find this restaurant to their liking. They also have an impressive range of Boylan vintage sodas, my favourite of which is the traditional tasting root beer. Salt ‘n’ Bat is dine in or take away. If you are dining in, however, don’t expect anything fancy as you will be seated in red or blue plastic chairs with a white plastic table. Nonetheless, the good food(and hopefully good company you keep) is enough to make Salt ‘n’ Bat a fine place to eat.
