Huge meals, and a great selection. It definitely feels more authentic, and a lot less frilly than places like Mamasita. It’s just filling and tasty, and not greasy or slathered with cheese. Also, they do a mean margarita. Heaps of salt on the rim of the glass, a decent wallop of good tequila, and fresh lime. The sangria is also brilliant, and the house-made corn chips are awesome. Lovely staff, always buzzing and busy — a really great place for Saturday night drinks and noms.

Holy Guacamole. Alright, I drank two giant margaritas so I’m not gonna pretend that I know what I’m talking about but I have to say the first thing that amazed me was the chips. They were like normal corn chips but in awesome long triangles instead of equilateral. And we ordered burritos and got stuck right in to it. Delicious giant meals. Full and happy we went for a lovely walk along the boardwalk afterwards. So great location too.

Two words: Veggie Fajitas. This breakfast changed my life. If your idea of a breakfast is good-value, or a Mexican mouth-party to wakeup your taste-buds, you have to try this place. I usually get the sizzling hotplate which includes: Scrambled Eggs, Sweet Corn, Spinach, Tomato, Eggplant, Pumpkin, Pine nuts, Mushrooms. Served with warm tortillas, Sour Cream & Guac. it’s also huge, at $ 16.50 a great investment to refill the tum after a big night out. Coffee is also good and Bluecorn really is a hidden gem for breakfast!

Wow living in Texas and Arizona and frequent trips to Mexico we have had our share of good Mexican food and this is as good as anything we have had! It’s better than Mamacitas. Really flavourful interesting dishes and great margaritas!!!

Gordon Ramsay would cringe We’ve given this Mexican venue two chances because they’re reviewed as a good vegan restaurant. Don’t listen to them. The food when they get it right isn’t terrible. But good luck getting it right. Night #1 We sat in the bar and were served by an awesome English girl who made us consistently good cocktails that got us drunk. Which is good because that is the last good thing I have to say. My partner ordered the Vegan quesadilla. It arrived and was instantly recognizable as the trout quesadilla. The nice English girl sent it back. We feasted instead on chili fries. The second vegan quesadilla arrived. This time with cheese in it.(These are the two quesadillas on the menu) the manager/owner came out to apologize and re-make it. By the time it arrived I’d long finished my main as they left my fajitas there the first attempt and they’d gone cold with the 40 minute wait. That being said. They took the quesadilla and some drinks off the bill. So we left happy and promised to return and give it a second shot. Which leads us to Night #2 The bar is closed. It’s a Tuesday night so we get sat in the restaurant which had its lights as bright as 100 suns. We ordered two cocktails and some chili fries in anticipation of any problems. The chili fries arrived covered in cheese and we re-iterated we ordered the fries. Yes, they are the fries. Then why do they have cheese? These are the chili fry nachos. We ordered the chili fries remember, as she’s vegan which we stated earlier? Ah yes. At this point the night got ugly. Either our waitress was an owner or a late life starting hospo worker with no clue. The fries arrived looking and tasting absolutely nothing like our last visit. Completely different and no chili. The side dip was wrong and when we pointed out that it was supposed to come with chipotle mayo not sour cream we were told the menu had changed 6 months ago but the printed menus didn’t reflect that. Since it had only been about a month between visits we knew that wasn’t true but held our tongues. The fries were almost inedible. The drinks arrived and the mojito was good but the margarita with coconut shavings had no coconut shavings it was just sugar. We’d have complained but we didn’t see our waitress again for ages. It was at this point our night was made. The nice older lady a table over saw that we waited so long to get someone’s attention to just get another drink she got up and pretended to take our order. She told us they’d waited 25 minutes to get drinks also and then left to get her entire table cutlery to eat their dessert with as they’d been left none. I then put my hand up like was back in primary and held it there for several minutes. I realize this made me look like a jerk but I’d been waiting so long I just didn’t care anymore. The second round of drinks which were the same as we ordered initially tasted nothing like the first. Several ingredients in the mojito were forgotten. Everything except lime and rum. Mmmm. The food arrived and the vegan quesadilla came with cheese in it AGAIN. We didn’t bother complaining because we didn’t see our waitress forever again and my partner just didn’t eat that bit. Side note: if you order the fish tacos don’t expect fish tacos. If someone had told me I’d ordered a creamy coconut Thai fish salad I’d have said it was perfect. Because it was a perfect Thai fish salad. But not fish tacos. All up I left nothing as a tip as service was terrible. As someone from North America it takes a lot for me not to tip. You have to be truly awful to deserve that. I tip my garbage man.

The food was delicious and they accommodated our vegan diets with no fuss. The prices may be off putting at first but the portions are huge and the cuisine is authentic. Definitely coming back.

Forget Senoritas, forget Radio Mexico., Mamasita… I’ll see you soon… It might be a very bold statement but I’ll say it anyway… Bluecorn is just about the best mexican that I’ve had in Melbourne. Yep… It is… I had dinner there with a date on Saturday night — she suggested the place and god I am so glad she did. It was so good. The only downside was my drink actually. I ordered the mango mojito and it was really strong. You could really taste the rum. I was driving on the night so I couldn’t have it. I wasn’t cavalier(or stupid I should say!) enough to risk it. Luckily, she agreed to swap drinks with me and I ended up having her classic mojito and that was really nice. Now to the highlight of the night. The food. She ordered the prawn fajita and I had the pulled pork taco. It was brilliant! Seriously delicious — great flavour, fresh ingredients, really tasty. I also tried some of her prawn fajita and that was really good as well. For dessert, we shared the cinnamon and orange churros and wow… wow… ‘Nouf said! You’ll find Bluecorn on Barkly St in St Kilda just off Acland St so right in the heart of a really cool, busy and bustling part of town which is the perfect location for a night out and abouts. It has plenty of seating inside and in the courtyard at the back as well. It’s pricey I’ll give you that but the portion sizes are quite big and it’ll fill the average person up no worries — not me though but then again, I’m not that average am I! I shall definitely return before this year is over!

On a catch up dinner with a friend we were on the hunt for Mexican food. Our original plan was to go to Radio Mexico(in the same area) however they had a waiting time of 45mins which we didn’t want to do. We walked around the area and discovered Bluecorn around the corner. The menu looked interesting and a few of the specials caught our attention so we decided to try the restaurant out. Pork Belly and Slow Roasted Lamb Tacos were our choices of the night and upon receiving the dishes we were amazed at their generous serving size as we thought we would have to order more. Their Tacos aren’t your traditional soft wrap, these were more on the crispy side but we were still able to fold them. Both dishes were really yummy but lacked a little freshness. All the right flavours were there with the right combinations but that Mexican freshness was missing. I’d recommend trying out this place just for the novelty of the different style Tacos.

AMBIANCE: Good place for larger groups, particularly at the back — they have long picnic style tables which can accommodate 10+ people. The front area(entrance) has a smaller dining space, max table sitting is 4 i think. It is right in front of the street and they open the french-style doors completely so beware of cars and onlookers passing by. FOOD: — Tacos: serving size is very good — entrée or main — you will get good bang for buck. They do pack the the soft tortilla shell(taco) with a lot of filling — plenty of meat, salsa and other garnishes. However, at the fillings expense, the tortilla becomes soggy and quite difficult to manually handle — a knife and fork is a must. Otherwise it is well toasted so it adds that nice texture to all the garnishes that mexican food offers. — Rib and Pork braised tacos very good. Big chunks of meat!!! — Scallop and Chorizo — good flavors — but i only got 2 scallops — no bueno! –Chicken Enchilada — excellent rice and frijoles(well seasoned) again this is a good/healthy serving. PRICING: — Decent I was well fed for $ 27 — and i can«eat» my share! But this cuisine is still tremendously overpriced. In the states i use to buy these things from a truck for a buck fiddy! And it was hellla authentic and good! I guess that is the premium for being hip and trendy — because seriously these ingredients do not cost that much! WHATSMISSING: — Still looking for that joint here in Melbourne that has authentic mexican — i mean the roots!!! Lenguas and tripas taco(ox tongue and tripe); tortas and tamales! Biria and various types of sopas. Though I think this might be a long time coming for Australia — let alone melbourne(let me know if i am wrong though).

Simply put, our experience at Bluecorn was disappointing at best. The backyard terrace has a lively atmosphere but sadly that’s where the fun stops. The food was about as Mexican as tiramisu. My husband ordered tamales — a classic. They arrived as a cold, greyish slab of casserole, barren of garnish and totally flavourless. I would never have guessed what it was if he hadn’t told me. My sister in law very politely but specifically stated her allergy to dairy, yet her fajitas arrived smothered in cheese. When she asked to speak to someone about it, the manager appeared and scolded her for mistaking cheese for«Mexican spices.»(??) He agreed to remake the dish. 45 minutes later the fajitas reappeared, with cheese mixed through the rice. Again he insisted the cheese was seasoning and that she was being difficult. Impossibly, this meal plus a round of drinks cost our still hungry party of four $ 250 and a serious dose of attitude from the manager. With the variety of authentic, fresh Mexican flavors in Melbourne(not to mention the other great restaurants in St Kilda) there is really no reason to bother with Bluecorn.

Bluecorn certainly serves up a Mexican breakfast like no other! Having ordered a sizzling plate of everything(scrammbled eggs, mushrooms, capsicum, spinach, chorizo, beans, guacamole, sour cream and tortillas), you can say I was fairly chuffed when it arrived! The coffee however, was unfortunately a bit of a fail bringing down a perfectly good meal. I should have ordered a margarita with breakfast instead! The interior is a little corny(get it), representing Mexico in all of its clichéd glory, and the service was a little slack. On a higher note, it does take bookings for breakfast, so it’s good if you’re planning on having brunch with a big group of friends.

This place confuses me. Why would you serve enormous, well portioned meals and then charge a ridiculous amount for tiny appetisers? We were stung $ 5-$ 6 for every tiny dish of salsa/dip that we wanted to have corn chips with. In the end, trying to build enough to eat said chips cost us nearly as much as the main! On to the mains. They were tasty and fresh. Good value and a good option for casual mexican. Bluecorn fits comfortably in the middle ground in terms of the style of Mexican. Not quite up to the standard of some of the newer places, but if casual and unpretentious is what you’re after, it’s a damn sight better than a certain chain restaurant. One side note I will make is that if they want to compete with the slew of Mexican joints coming in to the area, they may want to give their service staff a slap on the wrist…

A pretty good Mexican influenced eatery. After being spoiled in LA for south of the border cuisine, it’s still a shock paying as much for a fajita as I would for a Guy Grossi main, yet thems the breaks in Melbourne. Bluecorn though, does huge mains and(if you’re budget airline sized) can easily share one between two, just like in LA. The five of us ordered four dishes where three would have been plenty. We had a steak fajita which was tasty and came with about six tortillas. A friend ordered the slow cooked ribs tacos(not those awful taco bill Doritos style tacos) that looked so good I had to indulge even though I was full. Looks like I’ll be asking for the emergency exit row on the next flight if I eat here again. Its definitely worth eating at Bluecorn and paying a premium helps keep the drunken backpackers out too which is a bonus in St Kilda.

I loved the food and there was plenty of it. The back courtyard is a bit of stretch in terms of seated dining. But if they didn’t have it you’d never get it in. It is low key dining as you would generally expect from Mexican. But the food is all worth it.

Wow! It’s a busy Sunday night, and this place is flat chat. Not just any Sunday night mind, but Easter Sunday. Although the dining in experience is awesome, this is one of the nights when ordering take– away is advisable, lest you want to jostle for position to be let into to a spare table; like a hard fought and unyielding battle. It’s very popular, and populous. So I’m sitting out on the street trying not to get either trampled or stampeded by the continuous bustling crowd that streams by. The restaurant itself is full of very interesting folk. What some might label «hipster’s“but they tend to have a edge of darkness to them that cuts right through that. There’s also a group of quite cool cats in back of the restaurant, whom peter out occasionally to puff large volume of smoke. Sorry I got distracted, I’m supposed to be taking about the food. All I can vouch for, at least up until this point is the chorizo-pepper taco’s. Damm good! Teaming with excellent ingredients; fresh corn, black bean, lettuce, tomato, and the afore mentioned fillings. It’s like sitting down and eating the food pyramid in one go! Much nutrition, ultra tasty. Low key dining setting but welcome and inviting nevertheless, it’s like you’re at home. This means you can focus on all the happenings around you. This gets hard when the food comes though. It’s great and you will be struck by it. Staff were run off their feet with a large volume of people, orders, odd requests, general confusion and bussiness and they excelled. well done to them.

Bluecorn is one of those places where the eating experience is only enhanced by a hangover. Like someone has wrapped a warm, fuzzy poncho of feel-good around your ailing body. It’s also quite easily the tastiest and most generous Mexi fare I have eaten ever. The portions are large and I noticed a family sitting at the table next to us had opted to share a few dishes amongst themselves, where as we’d ordered a dish each. I felt a bit greedy at first; had we missed the ‘designed to share memo’?. But then I just felt a little sorry for them. Who got more delicious cheesey, corny, coriandery enchilada in their bellies? Nom nom nom! The food will make you eat ’til you bloat… and keep eating.

Excellent Mexican in a land mostly void of the delights of Mexican food! I have been in search of awesome Mexican since I moved to Australia a year ago. This was about the closest I have gotten to awesome Mexican. Had a killer appetizer which was a special — the crispy scallop quesadilla. It was divine. I was a little put off by the $ 5 for a basket of half crispy and half stale or not quite cooked enough tortilla chips. I’m still trying to get used to the non-limitless chips and salsa, but oh well. The small scoop of guac for $ 5 was tasty. Our entrees were both excellent, though I have never paid $ 32 for fajitas, and the $ 26 burrito my guest ordered also pushed the scales. Throw in a couple $ 18 margaritas and you have yourself a $ 150 dinner for two. The service was a bit off, not terribly attentive. BUT I adored the lovely girl from Ireland who treated us like warmly welcomed guests. The food was super flavorful and absolutely no complaints. I will definitely be back, but the prices make it more of a special experience rather than a Tuesday night takeaway solution.

This is an ultra relaxing and cool place to get your Mexican fix. It’s only small but has a heart where I like that they have an interesting menu. They are really accommodating there where it feels friendly and open. The big downside is that it’s on the pricier side. However, the food is delicious and you will be more than happy with your dining experience. Sometimes it’s worth the little extra to ensure you have a good night. Bluecorn is probably the best Mexican in the area where I like that it’s relaxed and casual. People have bagged it in the past for being slow but I think it’s just that they’re casual there and in no rush, which doesn’t appeal to some but I was more than enjoying the company I had plus my Mexican beer was going down a treat!

This has to be one of the finest mexican cuisines I have ever had. Bluecorn truly impressed. We were blessed today with some warm weather and sunshine. I came to Bluecorn after a recommendation from my best mate and she could not have been more right about it. Bluecorn is the Mexican restaurant you have been waiting for, the dinner you have in that dream with Brad Pitt… You know which one I’m talking about. We sat and we served by a short-haired waitress who was quite pleasant and was happy to explain the differences of the mexican cuisines. We ordered drinks(the mother and sister went straight for the massive margaritas) and then food. Drinks came out within minutes and food not too long after. I had the Goats Cheese and Black Bean Quesadilla, my mouth had literally died and gone to heaven. This was by far the greatest mexican i had eaten. My mother and sister raved about theirs as well, Bluecorn, you really know how to please everyone. There’s specials posted up on the board and it’s worth taking a look at, cheap options for those of us not ‘fully loaded’. The one item we picked up from the board was 1 litre of Mexican punch for $ 29… Yes please!

I am constantly searching for good mexican in Melbourne. Two years in Los Angeles, a mexican boyfriend and his mother who cooked the most mouthwatering traditional mexican dishes EVER and unfortunately my standards have become a little high as far as South of the border cuisine goes. Blue Corn is pretty good– the style of Mexican is what I d call a mix between tex– mex and more inventive mexican, with a very large seafood selection. Lots of cheese, yet not enough spice for my liking. I think they do a better job than alot of other places in Melbourne; most places wil get a tortilla, throw some generic meat on it, slop some salsa from a jar, cheese and sour cream on top and call it authentic. Blue Corns’ menu is alot more exciting than that, and everything I tried was really nice — I guess just not the flavours Im truly searching for. Im sure most people will love it. Sidenote — I do also love the fact that the walls are not covered in sombreros and cheesy mexican decorations– their décor focuses for more on the more traditional dia de los muertos cultural celebrations, and its nice to see a restaurant here truly showing a beautiful side of a culture that is little known in Australia. They offer lots of yummy cocktails, though prices leave me longing for restaurants of L. A, where a good strong margarita is $ 5 at any decent happy hour. The search for authentic traditional mexican continues…
