4÷1÷2013 Formerly Sukachi, as well as various trading names, but is now«The Party»; a Korean and Japanese Restaurant. Located on the corner of Leichardt and Upper Edward Street in Spring Hill(next to Westpac), The Party looked to have drawn a small crowd, so we decided to give this place a try. It might have been that people are still in that festive«party» mood(after New years and Christmas), or it could’ve been the fact that most of the other cafes and restaurants in the area were closed. There are indoor as well as outdoor seating options, and The Party also offers free Wi-Fi for guests. We were greeted with a friendly«hello» as we walked in. Perhaps because it was lunch, or their lack of staff at the time, but there was no table service, so we had to line up at the counter(although they bring out your order when its ready). There’s a decent selection of sushi on offer at the counter, and their menu offers several Soup dishes and Curries with Rice. We went with the Tonkatsu Curry(Pork), which is fried crumbed pork with Rice. For $ 8.50 it seemed reasonable. We sat outside to maximise people-watching potential and take advantage of the gentle breezes. The order took longer than we would’ve thought, and when it did arrive, we couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed. The curry looked like brown soup, glue-like in substance, lumped on the plate. Not very inviting at all. The pork looked nice, so I avoided the«curry» where possible. The dish did have a nice little serving of salad on the side, which was unexpected, and that tasted really nice. Overall, it was underwhelming, and even though it was only $ 8.50, part of me did feel a little ripped off. The restaurant might be called«The Party», but there certainly wasn’t one in my mouth. Perhaps my expectations were high as previous experiences with Japanese food led me to believe its one of those dishes you can’t go wrong with. Then again, I did choose a curry dish, and perhaps, there’s a lesson to be learnt here. That is, Japanese /Korean restaurateurs should avoid doing curries… maybe. The Party, its location, and what they have done to re-invigorate this venue in terms of street appeal, does have potential though, and we hope they can continue to improve. In the time I’ve been around Spring Hill, It seems all businesses on this site have always folded, so hopefully, The Party will fare better than its predecessors.
