JFX used to be a little place tucked away in a side street. Today, it has truly become an institution for Southport. The wide choice of tasty Japanese food coupled with friendly service is great. The stone pots with some sake on the side are worth trying!

Stopped in here quickly before a movie so didn’t have time for the Japanese BBQ(which looked and smelled fantastic), but was very happy with the service and price of my Chicken Teriyaki rice bowl. You won’t be disappointed with JFX.

My friend took me here the other day for some Japanese BBQ. I’ve never had Japanese BBQ before so I was excited to try! The BBQ option was about $ 40AUD per person. Honestly, this price is ridiculous. Most Korean BBQs are about $ 20 – 30 per person. Anyways, they have indoor and outdoor seating. We opted for indoor seating because it was around 8pm at night and was super windy! They gave us order sheets and we mark what we wanted and how much we wanted. Those order sheets were pretty nifty! You just mark down what you want and give it to any of the workers. TIP: If it’s your first time here, order a small amount for each type of food that you want. This is so that you can try everything out and check out the proportion sizes. if you want more, just order more. They do charge you extra if have leftovers! My friend and I ordered: beef, pork belly, shrimp, ribs, corn, mushroom, salmon sashimi, salad, salmon sashimi salad, gyoza, takoyaki, edamame, kimchi, and ox tongue. The ox tongue was yummy! It was thinly sliced and flavoured very well. The corn and mushroom were cooked with butter; yumm! The salmon sashimi just melted in my mouth! The workers there were very friendly and helpful. It seems like they lack English, so it was a little difficult to communicate with them. What I found was a little annoying was when they greeted customers. It was cool they they greeted customers every time they came and left; however, they would yell at the top of their lungs. The place isn’t very big so you could definitely hear it every time. I believe their store closes at 9pm, so at around 8:30pm, they close the kitchen. Make sure to get your orders in before 8:30pm.

JFX, short for Japanese Food eXpress is an absolute hidden gem. You’d have to wander into the plaza to find it, as you can’t see it from the street, but when you do your tastebuds are in for a real treat. The first rule of Asian restaurants is that if a place is full of Asians the food’s bound to be good, and that rule applies here… it’s always full of groups of Japanese. The food is cheap and tasty. I’d highly recommend the aburi salmon rice served in the hot rock — they flame the salmon at your table with a blowtorch, it’s impressive and oh so delicious! Their Japanese-style BBQ is also a standout… you cook it yourself at your table, and it’s just fantastic!
