I attended this venue for a Work Xmas party. So I wasn’t there for the Arts. However the building and design of the place is very nice. It made for a really nice function venue, very big, nice lighting and a well good makeshift bar and DJ stands. I will have to re attend this place in the near future to actually see some art and learn more about this building and the events it holds. What I can say is that i’ve been really drunk here, and it was a great time.

I’m always surprised when friends of mine who live in Melbourne tell me that they’ve never been to the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Located just outside the CBD, this free gallery exhibits some really striking and impressive contemporary art, by celebrated artists from around the globe. In terms of the art on display at any given time, it can be a bit hit and miss, but I have seen several exhibitions at ACCA that have really blown me away. They also quite often have shows that are particularly good for kids(in terms of family-friendly content and accessibility). But be sure to check online before making a visit with children in tow. I see that during October they have been running nude tours of the gallery, which gives you an idea of the weird and wonderful world of ACCA.

ACCA is the bizarrely playful institution where adults are allowed to briefly behave like children. A block behind St Kilda rd in Southbank sits the rust finished, geometric monolith that houses a rotating exhibition of some of the worlds best known contemporary artists. Theres no paintings for sale, no sales people, no institutional snobbery and no ENTRANCEFEE. The exhibits are always an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ experience that sees the venue morphed into a completely different environment for each new conceptual work. Previous works have seen massive rooms transformed into a labyrinth of cardboard cubby houses, audio visual pieces, floating gardens, massive sculptures, interactive pieces and sliding projections complete with heat sensitive bean bags. Each visit to ACCA expect a different experience, the best feature being that a lot of works are interactive and take you on a journey beyond a traditional gallery. The invigilators/staff are nice/informed and can often help you make more sense of the works. ACCA is kind of good as a casual/afternoon date venue as well. It says«i’m cultural», its fun, free and theres a café/bar at the Malthouse Theatre next door.

While you can’t fault the old masters, these days it seems that contemporary art is where it’s at. Fresh and exciting, these are the artists who are forging new design concepts and innovations. Whether you adore it, or it leaves you feeling puzzled and claiming«my 3-year old could have made that», it really doesn’t matter. This is what art is all about. There is no contest, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art(ACCA) is easily Melbourne’s best destination for contemporary artwork. Even amongst a city such as Melbourne where art galleries reign supreme, the ACCA is a special place. Showcasing works by both Australian and International artists, it is a must-see for anyone interested in art, photography and design. With five exhibitions held annually, there’s bound to something to please everyone form the experienced art-lover to the gallery virgin. At the moment ACCA is showing ‘Power to the People Contemporary Conceptualism and the Object in Art.’ Recalling the interactive art of the sixties, that saw happenings and interactive audience projects replace traditional art work, it promises to be an interesting experience.
