This one goes out to all of you sweet tooths… welcome to cake heaven! These guys definitely know how to create specialty cakes and other sweet treats for any occasion. If you’re running behind schedule, you can either select from the visionary cakes on display, or if you’re running to schedule, they’ll happily create your own imaginative masterpiece to order. Cakes are house-made flourless chocolate, gracefully iced and skillfully decorated. You’ll also find a cute little café inside where you can enjoy a hot chocolate and dessert. If you’re wondering about the cost, it is very expensive, but worth every bite if you’re aiming for that ‘WOW’ factor. Tip: If you want to leave an impression, but don’t have the money to lash out on an entire cake, you can purchase one or many of the 3D animated cupcakes, which they also bake on the premises.

Behind a terracotta brick veneer a short distance away from the pulsating market-going crowds, Let Them Eat Cake is a large breezy space. Upon entering, to one’s left-hand side, an assortment of shortbread cookies and gingerbread men and trees cluster on tall shelves. On the opposite side, cake consultations occur on a long table, with foam replicas and design books paraded in front of the budding couple or their in-laws. But it is a front glass cake counter that steals the show. Although brimming with conventional tarts and tea cakes, it is the beguiling pettinice-iced(a premium type of fondant) cupcakes that truly capture and hypnotise you. Conjured by an industrious kitchen just behind, there’s sure to be a highly-decorated cupcake for any occasion — a cheeky Elmo or Cookie Monster to award that good little child, a patchworked soccer ball or football for the sport-nut, a mini-car for the motor vehicle aficionado, a tapestry of flowers and the occasional mad-hatter tea-pot for the elegant lady, and iconic fashion motifs for the fashionista(think Chanel’s interlocking Cs, mini-stratospheric high heels, mini-Hermes Birkin-esque tote bags).

Whenever I step into this cake shop, I’m reminded of how the world presented to me as a small, adventurous child. Everything was colourful, and magical — mystical even. Logic didn’t have a place in reality, it was all just fantasy and illumination. Oh and of course sugar. I’m not too well versed in cake shops but I do believe that this is probably the best in Melbourne in terms of the skill and unique conceptions. I’ve ordered two cakes from here. On both occasions, the staff were unbelievably helpful, kind, and ensured that I left with exactly what I wanted — even if that was Buzz Lightyear doing the dirty with Woody. Although I’ve never been here as a once off customer in search of a sugar fix, the atmosphere seems perfect a bit of midday indulgence.

Let Them Eat Cake has some of the most beautifully decorated cakes I have ever seen. What’s more, they’re cute. It’s such a treat to go in to ooh and ahh over such gorgeous creations. Furthermore, it’s not just a decorated cake ordering shop, it is a decorated cake EATING shop. Yes, that’s right, not only can you look at all the pretty edible art, you can sample(in muffin form) all the delights without having to make an appointment and plan a party. It’s usually jam packed with families of a weekend, and they make allowances for this, with newspapers and things to entertain the children. There’s also coffee just in case the cake itself does not satisfy you. I think they even do other food, but to be honest, I was just staring at the tower of cute icing pigs in the corner.
