The Courier-Mail Piazza

There are events constantly being held at the Suncorp Piazza, from Australian Idol auditions, to yoga workshops, to young kids holding hip hop practice, to traditional song and dance performances during the Buddha Birth Day Festival.
Some of the time you’ll just see people sitting in the stalls in an attempt to escape the heat. And despite the signs that prohibit skating and rollerblading, you’ll often see groups of kids practicing their moves. When my friend and I were attempting to rollerblade through Brisbane, we rendezvoused at the Piazza because it was the perfect starting point with its smooth pavements.
I’d recommend coming here if you have take away from the nearby restaurants and want to eat in peace, i.e. you don’t want to be attacked by diseased ibises. Or just swing by for an illicit skate — heh heh heh.

Whether it’s broadcasting the Queen,
the melbourne cup or being hired out for a lavish indian dance party,
there is usually something going on at the Suncorp Piazza.
I remember participating in a craft workshop here
and being completely awed by expanse of space.
This covered amphitheatre is enormous
and makes for one great stage.
…And even when not in use
it’s very common to see skateboarders, hiphop dancers and everyday folk
taking advantage of its smooth concrete surrounds, ample seating
and after hours toilet amenities.
A definite Southbank landmark.

It’s rare to walk past Suncorp Piazza during the school holidays and not see something going on. Whether it’s a festival, workshops or concert, this amphitheater hosts a wide range of activities throughout the year.
A pretty interesting sight is being near the amphitheater when the general auditions for So You Think You Can Dance or Australian Idol are being held, because for every legitimate artist there, there’s a crazy waiting for some camera time. It’s a shame that Suncorp Piazza wasn’t designed with some more thought. The concrete structure means that it’s acoustically not great for live music.
The venue holds 2,158 people and it absolutely HUGE. It really is perfect for community events seeing as it embraces the open air feel that is so typical of Brisbane.
