One of my favourite things to do in Brisbane is to take the Kedron Brook cycleway out to Shorncliffe. The bikeway runs from Mitchelton through 30 kilometres of natural corridors to Shorncliffe. The bike path passes through Everton Park, Gordon Park, Kedron, Clayfield, Toombul, Nudgee, Deagon, and finishes at the sea shore at Shorncliffe. It will take around an hour and a half if you keep a good pace, but there’s no need to hurry. There are beautiful places to stop and have a rest throughout the track. It’s a great way to see uninhabited parts of the northern suburbs. You’ll be surprised at the amount of quaint little bridges, creeks and gullies that you’ll come across, and the little jungle corridors you zip through. You’ll see the landscape change dramatically as you go by. You’ll start off in lush green bushland areas which will span out into open plains, and then into wetlands. The little back alleyways and pockets you ride through feel like you’ve been exposed to well kept secrets. It’s amazing how much you’ll see and discover about Brisbane when you ride the Kedron Brook bikeway. Take sunscreen and a bottle of water. Be wary of the confusing part where the bikeway stops just before JB Hi Fi at Kedron(due to construction– may be ok now). If it doesn’t connect up, all you’ve got to do is cross Gympie Road, get onto Park Road(runs parallel to Kedron Pub), turn onto Junction Road and take a left down Park Avenue. At the end of the street you’ll be able to resume the ride. If you don’t want to do the return ride, you can catch a train either from Shorncliffe or Mitchelton. Take a bunch of friends for a ride and discover your city at the same time. At the end, go get yourself some fish and chips and hang out by the sea shore. Lovely.
